Your knowledge, abilities, and positive attitude make you a highly regarded addition to our team, and I am certain that you will make a positive impact on our future. 4 Myrtle Beach Tower Today Myrtle Beach Air Traffic Control Tower assumed air traffic control duties from the United States Air Force on December 27, The tower was constructed by the US Air Force in the mid-1980s. The base building, which houses the TRACON, was commissioned in May of The tower was renovated at this same time. The traffic in Myrtle Beach airspace is a mix of military, general aviation, and air carriers. The Myrtle Beach area s economy is tourist oriented; therefore, our traffic is seasonal. During the vacation season, we are a level 8 and during the winter months, we are a level 6. Myrtle Beach International Airport is the only carrier airport in the Myrtle Beach ATCT airspace. The airport is currently expanding with a new FBO terminal and new passenger terminal. 4

5 Myrtle Beach Tower Leadership William (Bill) Price, is the Air Traffic Manager for the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Air Traffic Control Tower. Bill joined the FAA in 1975 as an air traffic controller at Greer, SC ATCT. His employment track record includes serving as an Air Traffic Controller and Staff Specialist at Charlotte, NC ATCT; Front Line Manager at Standiford Field, Louisville, KY; Front Line Manager and Operations Manager at Raleigh, NC ATCT; and Assistant Air Traffic Manager at Greensboro, NC ATCT. Bill was born in Traveler s Rest, SC but calls Charlotte, NC home. He enjoys golfing, snow skiing, and gardening. 5

6 Policies Reporting for Duty New employees report for duty at 8:00 AM and will work an 8-1/2 hour shift, Monday through Friday until assigned to a training team. Security FAA ID cards shall be displayed at all times by all employees. We welcome guests on official visits, family and friends of employees. Cell Phones Cell phones are not permitted in operational areas. 6

7 Myrtle Beach Profile Myrtle Beach, SC is in Horry County (pronounced Oh-ree), named for the Revolutionary War hero Brigadier General Peter Horry. Myrtle Beach has its Southern history with Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, WW I and WW II contributions. Myrtle Beach boasts a history of habitation for thousands of years. This includes Chicora and Waccamaw Indian sites, a Spanish settlement in 1526, and British settlers in the 1600 s. Myrtle Beach is one of the top tourist destinations in the continental United States with nearly 14 million visitors a year. There is over 60 miles of warm, sandy beaches, called the Grand Strand, with limitless vacation options for all ages. Myrtle Beach is in the top five Most Popular Vacation Rental Destinations in the nation and is highlighted as one of America s Best Beaches. There are over 460 hotels and resorts; hundreds of rooms are beach front with beautiful ocean views. Along the Grand Strand, the more than 1,700 restaurants offer great true Southern-style cooking to all types of fabulous fresh seafood. Myrtle Beach s restaurants are world famous. To name just a few, we are home to Hard Rock Café, the rock group KISS first Coffeehouse, Jimmy Buffett s Margaritaville, House of Blues, Rioz Brazilian Steakhouse (the meat just keeps on coming until you tell them to stop!). Dinner theaters include Dolly Parton s Dixie Stampede and Medieval Times. Entertainment venues in Myrtle Beach are at a premium. Along with the dinner theaters, Myrtle Beach has the original world-renowned Carolina Opry Show, (now in its 25 th year), the Long Bay Symphony, Legends in Concert, state-of-the-art Ripley s Aquarium, an IMAX Theater, La Belle Amie Vineyard, and Brookgreen Gardens. The list just keeps on going. Myrtle Beach is a shopper s delight. The Coastal Grand Mall, (the largest shopping mall in South Carolina), Barefoot Landing, Broadway at the Beach, as well as two large Tanger Outlet Centers with more than 300 stores, to name only a few! 7

8 NO CHANCE CE OF GETTING BORED IN MYRTLE BEACH! Sports and Special Events The Grand Strand is home to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, an Atlanta Braves franchise Carolina League baseball team. Their BB&T Field has been rated top of the line with its high tech stadium features. Players such as Rafael Furcal began their baseball career with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. It goes without saying that fishing is first-rate along the Grand Strand. Whether deep-sea fishing, fishing from one of the many piers, or surf fishing, it thrills the most seasoned fisherman. The Grand Strand hosts annually the Bi-Lo Myrtle Beach Marathon, a track and field event each February. It includes a 5K night run and attracts around 6,000 runners. Stock car racing is popular with Southern NASCAR influence. The racing takes place at the Myrtle Beach Speedway and, along with the NASCAR Speed Park, draws many appearances from popular NASCAR drivers. Festivals and special events are always happening within driving distance of Myrtle Beach. Each year just prior to the Spring tourist season, Myrtle Beach hosts the Canadian-American Days (Can-Am Days) to welcome our Canadian neighbors and friends for fun filled days of activities. 8

9 And about that little white ball it appears at around 120 golf courses giving Myrtle Beach the distinct title of Golf Capital of the World. Many courses host professional and amateur tournaments on courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, and Gary Player, among others. There s also close to 50 miniature golf courses. EDUCATION The entire area of Horry County is under a single public school system. Myrtle Beach has private schools of various sizes and motifs. Myrtle Beach is home to two major institutes of higher learning; Coastal Carolina University (CCU) and Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC). CCU is known nation wide for its Marine Biology program. HGTC has several convenient locations. Myrtle Beach is also home to a branch of Webster University, an MBA graduate school, and NAIA Flight School. 9
