1 Mental Health First Aid Instructor Certification Program Application Packet Request for Applications to Receive MHFA or YMHFA Instructor Training Application Due Date: Original March 13, 2015 extended to 3:00 pm MT Wednesday March 18, 2015 Questions should be directed to by 3/9/15 Note: Subject line should read MHFA Instructor Application Question The Colorado Behavioral Healthcare Council (CBHC) and Mental Health First Aid Colorado are pleased to solicit applications from individuals interested in the strategic expansion of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) in their communities. MHFA is a groundbreaking, internationally recognized evidence-based training program to help citizens identify mental health and substance abuse problems, connect individuals to care, and safely de-escalate crisis situations if needed. The Adult MHFA course trains adults assisting other adults. The Youth MHFA course trains adults and youth ages 16+ to assist adolescents. The MHFA Instructor training is held over five days and is taught by two authorized MHFA trainers connected to at least one of the Mental Health First Aid USA Authorities. Only participants who have been present for the entire 5-day training will be considered for certification as instructors. Unless, a participant is a current Instructor for the Adult MHFA curriculum, they will only be required to attend the first 2.5 days of training to become certified as an Instructor for the Youth MHFA curriculum. The opposite is also true If a participant is a current Instructor for the Youth MHFA curriculum, they will only be required to attend the first 2.5 days of training to become certified as an Instructor for the Adult MHFA curriculum. Certified instructors are expected to offer at least three trainings per year to maintain certification. Each participant must review this entire document & sign the attestation page before attending the training. In fall 2014, CBHC was awarded funding made available by the General Assembly and directed through the Colorado Department of Human Services, Office of Behavioral Health, to expand MHFA and YMHFA. This application process was designed to support individuals who have opportunities to reach out to populations (first responders; government; deaf and hard of hearing; criminal justice; schools; at risk populations, etc) in their community and demonstrate a clear commitment to the mission and values of the Mental Health First Aid initiative. Preference will be given to candidates who have not had the opportunity to receive MHFA/YMHFA Instructor trainings through their organization or association. Successful applicants will be awarded participant slots a MHFA or YMHFA Instructor training spot. The following outlines the certification process, certification maintenance, and privileges for Mental Health First Aid Instructors. Instructor Training The MHFA Instructor training is held over five days and is taught by two authorized MHFA trainers connected to at least one of the Mental Health First Aid USA Authorities. Only participants who have been present for the entire 5-day training (or 2.5 day, if already certified in either the adult or youth course) will be considered for certification as instructors. During the training, each participant will present an assigned 30 minute portion of the 8-hour YMHFA/MHFA course to the group. Trainers will conduct an individual evaluation of each participant in addition to the peer feedback provided. Participants are expected to be active in providing peer reviews on days four and five. In addition to the presentation, each participant must complete and pass a written exam prior to the end of the training. Each of the above items determines whether or not an individual is granted certification to teach the MHFA course. It is not guaranteed that all participants who attend the instructor training will achieve certification. Certification Maintenance To maintain certification, each MHFA Instructor is required to: Teach their first course within 6 months of training and teach at least three YMHFA/MHFA courses per year. Present the current program in accordance with the course outline, objectives and key messages, and materials provided upon certification: While instructors should add local resources, contact information and examples, they cannot otherwise alter course materials in delivering MHFA to public audiences. MHFA Colorado welcomes any questions or concerns relating to the fidelity of the program in community presentations. Collect evaluations from each course participant to whom a certificate is issued. In order to standardize evaluations nationwide, instructors must use the standard course evaluation form provided in the MHFA-USA teaching kit and on the MHFA-USA Technical Assistance site. Report this evaluation information to MHFA-USA to ensure you are delivering the program on a regular basis, maintaining acceptable evaluations from participants, and to help evaluate how the program is received nationwide. This reporting is done electronically. Mental Health First Aid Colorado Instructor Training Application, Page 2
3 Post and report information about MHFA courses and participation to MHFA Colorado to meet data and evaluation requirements to demonstrate impact and reach of the program to the Colorado Department of Human Services and the Colorado General Assembly. This reporting is done online. Respect the privacy of course participants, colleagues and others, including the responsibility to protect personal information when gathering information on registration forms or in submitting evaluations; or in gaining permission prior to sharing personal stories or experiences of others. Post-Certification Resources Once certified, instructors are granted access to a variety of materials designed to help develop and present the program, including: Registration on the Instructor Technical Assistance Website: Allows access to program materials and resources needed to teach and promote the course, including course PowerPoint, handouts & exercises, evaluation forms, certificate template, and a variety of marketing and business development templates. Registration on the MHFA Colorado Website: provides access to the latest information, marketing materials, resources guides, funding opportunities, and other developments in Colorado related to MHFA. Also provides a centralized website for promoting and facilitating registration/admin of your MHFA courses. Enrollment in the MHFA-USA Listserve: Instructors nationwide can connect, discuss MHFA-related questions, and share news about developments in your community. Enrollment in the MHFA Colorado Listserve: Colorado Instructors connect, discuss MHFA-related questions, and share news about developments in your community. Access to Continuing Technical Assistance from MHFA - USA: Any further questions, comments, or concerns relating to the delivery or development of the course, we are available to speak with instructors directly or to connect with other instructors who may have a shared interest or specialty. Instructor Financial Requirements Instructors are required to prepurchase all materials needed to teach a course, including instructor manuals, printed resources, food, travel and lodging, prior to the course completion. Instructors who complete the proper course documentation requirements, as specified by MHFA USA and MHFA Colorado, are eligible for course reimbursement at $60 per participant through June, 2015, through MHFA Colorado. Course reimbursements only occur following course completion and completion of all items outlined above. Mental Health First Aid Colorado Instructor Training Application, Page 3
