Although Boomers and Matures have much to offer Gen Y in regards to knowledge and experience, 51 percent of Boomers and 66 percent of Matures report little to no interaction with their Gen Y colleagues. And three of the four generations say they have little to no interaction with the most experienced workers World of Work Study 2008
10 Defining the Challenge. Skilled labor shortage is not because of the lack of manpower in the wake of retiring Baby Boomers, but because of the limited transfer of knowledge. In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Gen Ys in today s workforce (79.8 million) outnumber Boomers (78.5 million) who are perceived as retaining the bulk of working America s institutional brain trust. 39 Children raised with the computer think differently from the rest of us. They develop hypertext minds. They leap around. It s as though their cognitive structures were parallel, not sequential. Linear thought processes that dominate educational systems now can actually retard learning for brains developed through game and Web surfing processes on the computer. While these individual cognitive skills may not be new, the particular combination and intensity is. 49 So is business Armageddon at hand? The short answer is no. The proposed shortage of workers is shaping out to be less and less of an issue, with a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics figure showing that by 2012, there will be jobs available for workers a shortage, but not nearly as severe as some are predicting. Many boomers also will continue to work longer, past the "normal" retirement age, simply due to poor financial planning. With the dollar falling and the cost of living increasing, the retirement flood probably will shake out to be nothing more than a slow trickle. Talentmanagement.com
