Purpose. To establish guidelines for the submission of applications and issue administrative policies governing applica tion for and assignment to subject training per reference (a). 2. Cancelation. COMNAVAIRESFORINST D 3. Policy. Selection for training as a Naval Flight Surgeon (Naval Officer Billet Classification 0110) is based upon a competitive review and the needs of the service. Considerations include availability of local billets, the applicant s academic background, professional aptitude, experience, physical condition and availability for training. Commander, Naval Air Reserve Force (COMNAVAIRESFOR) policy requires that graduates of flight surgeon courses serve in a Naval Reserve Flight Surgeon billet or (R general medical officer billet at a Naval Air Reserve site for 4 years after completing designation. 4. Flight Surgeon Training. The Naval Flight Surgeon Course is a 24 week course of instruction designed to prepare physicians for duty with the aviation operational forces of the Navy and Marine Corps. The course is designed to prepare aeromedical specialists to provide quality health care in an operational setting for the purpose of ensuring combat readiness. This includes preventive and administrative medicine, primary clinical care, medical planning and other duties required. The dynamic environment of Naval Aviation requires not only a well-rounded medical education, but also initiative, vigilance, foresight, self-assurance and loyalty. Credibility with the aircrew is developed by flying; therefore, the flight surgeon applicant must be physically fit to pass a flight physical and successfully complete arduous survival training. The Naval Aerospace and Operational Medical Institute (NAVAEROPMEDINST), located aboard (R Naval Air Station Pensacola, is responsible for training flight surgeons. Classes convene in August, October and January with a

The course of instruction includes military orientation, medical didactics, survival training and physical conditioning, and flight training. After successful completion of the curriculum, the students are awarded their Wings of Gold and Naval Officer Billet Classification Designation Requirements. There are three pathways for Naval Reserve physicians to earn designation as Naval flight surgeons; all require attendance at NAVAEROPMEDINST. a. The traditional pathway requires successful completion of the 24 week Flight Surgeon Course at NAVAEROPMEDINST leading to immediate designation. Those who desire the 24 week program will compete for quotas on a space available basis with January being the most likely convening date. b. The prior service Naval aviator pathway is reserved for physicians with prior service as designated Naval aviators or Naval flight officers. After successful completion of the 12 week medical didactics at NAVAEROPMEDINST and updating survival training, they are immediately designated Naval Flight Surgeons. A) c. The modular pathway is also available and breaks down the traditional 24 week program into four segments. These seg ments may be completed separately allowing the Reservist the opportunity to fulfill training requirements in divided classes. 6. Quota Control. Training quotas are established and maintained based upon naval service requirements as dictated by higher authority. Quota control is the COMNAVAIRESFOR (Director, R) Flight Medical Programs (N73)). R) 7. Class Assignments. Flight surgeon class assignments and orders for Selected Reserve medical officers will be issued by COMNAVAIRESFOR (N73). 8. Submission of Application a. All applications for assignment to the 24 week and modular Flight Surgeon Program will be submitted by official R) letter to COMNAVAIRESFOR (N73) in the format contained in enclosure (1). b. Applications for the 12-week prior designated Naval Aviator/ Naval Flight Officer Program will be submitted by official letter R) to COMNAVAIRESFOR (N73) in the format contained in enclosure (2). c. Applications must be submitted via the appropriate chain of command. All applications must include a complete flight physical examination. 2

Flight physical examinations must be completed and the typed original SF 88 must be submitted to NAVAEROPMEDINST for review and endorsement prior to application submission. The original handwritten SF 93 must accompany the SF 88 for review by NAVAEROPMEDINST. 9. Applicat ion Deadline a. Twenty-four week Flight vious year for January classes; classes. Commanding Officer Endorsement. Command endorsement of the applicant is required. Selection is highly competitive, therefore, the endorsement must be a thorough and complete evaluation of the candidate. Comments about duty performance, professional aptitudes, and officer deportment are key to selecting the best medical officer to fill the limited number of training billets. 11. Forms a. Standard Form 88, Report of Medical Examination, NSN and Standard Form 93, Report of Medical History, NSN , are available from the federal supply system through normal supply procurement procedures. b. NAVMED 6410/9, Anthropometric Data Record, NSN 0105-LF is available from Navy supply system and can be ordered per NAVSUP P2002. c. NRPC 1200/1, Naval Reserve Qualification Questionnaire is available from Naval Reserve Personnel Center, 4400 Dauphine St., Code 22, New Orleans, LA This form is mailed to individuals annually.
