What is a project? Semester Two Week 1 February 2014
What is a project A project is recognised by many leading authors and professional bodies as an organised way to achieve change
Definition of a Project Project Management Institute (PMI) A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product or service Association for Project Management (APM) Project management is the way of managing change.
Tower of Babel
Egyptian pyramids

Boulder dam
Edison's invention of the light bulb
Manhattan Project
Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile

Project components All projects Are a unique, transient endeavour to accomplish a defined objective Have a defined start and finish All projects have a defined common life cycle development sequence
Project life cycles There are many APM PMI P3M3 BS6079 Not PRINCE2
PMI Lifecycle APM Lifecycle
BS 6079 Lifecycle 16
Management Management Is the activity of planning, organising, directing and controlling, Communicating, deciding and using resources Resources could be materials, people, plant, software Management is a practice not a science, (Drucker, quoted by Morris, 2004)
What Distinguishes Project Management It appears the only thing separating projects from non projects is the life cycle If so the thing separating management from project management, must be the management skills and actions involved in successfully going through that life cycle How do we measure project success?

Project Management What goes on within project management? Integration of the work of others The application of management practice
Project Management Combination of scope management Task or activity scheduling over a defined time period Cost and resource management This gives us the basic project management controls, time and cost
Project Management Most types of management consider people management as important Project management is also Leadership People Communications Teamworking This gives us the basic skill requirements
Risk and Value Risk is considered important, as the level of risk may affect the chance of project success Value Value management or value engineering The final product quality
Cast Iron Triangle This gives us the three basics Time Cost Quality So, what does this mean?
Implications Project management is then broad and has to deal with a wide range of issues. These issues are likely to change as the project progresses from one phase in the life cycle to the next phase, concept to definition
The Extended Life Cycle Earlier than the concept phase Bid stage, procurement Extending beyond the handover phase Operations
Consequences of the Extended Life Cycle Is the project now more strategic? Can one person the pm, full comprehend the entire breadth of this scope Is there a limit to the project managers responsibility? If so what are the elements?
Projects Projects are in many ways specific, structured. Project management is generally focused on the project deliverables and achieving goals The pm needs to take care in the early stages of the project, suing what re known as the soft skills within a hard framework or methodology
Decision making Milestones Supply chain Corporate plans Requirements capture, note the word capture! Modelling Financial, scheduling, value, resourcing etc
Project context Increasingly the project is conceived or operates in a decentralised or fluid state
Bibliography APM Body of Knowledge, V BSI BS6079:2010 guide to project management ISO 21500:2012 Guide for project management PMI Body of Knowledge, 2004 Science, objective knowledge and the theory of project management, Morris, P., ICE James Forrest Lecture, Jan 2004.
Tutorial 1) Define Project Management? 2) Distinguish the difference of external and internal project with examples. 3) What are 3 forces that leads to the need for more sophisticated systems to control project? 4) Identify phase in project lifecycle and what are the additional phase in extended life cycle? 5) Project management need to consider people management. What are the elements of people management needed in managing a project?. Provide brief explanation of each element. 6) List the basic objectives of project management and how to measure the successfulness of a project?
