2 HIGHWAY REHAB CORP ASPHALT PAVEMENT RECYCLING A History of Highway Rehab Corp Highway Rehab Corp has more than 30 years experience in Asphalt Milling and Hot In-Place Asphalt Recycling Founded by Ken Carr and Jerry Starbuck in 1973, Highway Rehab Corp first introduced asphalt milling to the United States when the pair purchased a German-made Wirtgen Milling Machine for use in the US Road and bridge deck milling became commonplace throughout the United States in the 1970s, leading to the development of Hot In-Place Asphalt Recycling, a low-cost maintenance strategy that effectively re-uses existing material Hot In-Place Asphalt Recycling is now the oldest recycling discipline within the Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association (ARRA), an organization founded in 1976, with a membership comprised of contractors who performed heater-scarification work Ken and Jerry are among its founding members In addition to performing the work, Highway Rehab Corp now manufactures the recycling machines at their Cheektowaga, NY facility 2 Hot In-Place alt ec cl n The Energy Saving Method! 3 HOT IN-PLACE RECYCLING Definition: Heater scarification is a rehabilitation process that restores cracked, brittle, and irregular pavement in preparation for final thin wearing course as selected by the awarding authority Application: Roadways that possess a stable and structural adequate base are appropriate candidates for this process The depth and nature of the existing material must be evaluated prior to constructions A truck mounted surface recycler is capable of recycling speeds and highway speeds with a change in gears Multiple rows of spring loaded scarifiers penetrate the softened asphalt to the desired depth Two machines operating in tandem insure deep heating and softening of the aged payment The recycled material levels the previously deformed surface in preparation for an overlay or seal coat Application of rejuvenating agent along with dual milling heads improves the viscosity of the aged asphalt HOT IN-PLACE RECYCLING THE ENERGY SAVING METHOD 3
4 HIGHWAY REHAB CORP HOT IN-PLACE RECYCLING APPLICATIONS Hot In-Place Asphalt Recycling Hot In-Place Recycling is an on-site, in-place method that rehabilitates deteriorated bituminous pavements, minimizing the use of new materials Because asphalt is a unique construction material that can be effectively and economically restored, Hot In-Place Recycling encourages restoration rather than applying new material over deteriorating pavement or losing the asphalt altogether through grinding the material The process involves heating, scarifying/milling, adding a rejuvenating agent, mixing, placing and re-compacting the new bituminous pavement Hot In-Place Asphalt Recycling presents the opportunity to spread available funds over a much greater area, especially during times of rapidly increasing costs and limited funding In other words, the process allows communities and property owners to address roadway deterioration, ensuring that pavements are preserved and upgraded, and costly reconstruction is avoided Benefits Hot In-Place recycling effectively addresses the classic symptoms of deteriorated oxidized pavement In addition to being financially practical, the benefits of asphalt recycling include: Cracks are interrupted and filled Aggregate stripped of the bitumen is remixed and recoated Ruts and holes are filled, shoves and bumps are leveled, drainage and crowns are re-established Flexibility is restored by chemically rejuvenating the aged and brittle pavement Aggregate gradation and asphalt content may be modified by some variations of this process Pavement is corrected without applying a leveling course The use of in-place material reduces the amount of new asphalt applied in the overlay Stronger bonding of old and new asphalt compared to conventional overlay Later occurrences of reflection cracking in the overlay is eliminated or significantly reduced Thinner overlays produce longer retention of draining capacity of in-place curbs and gutters, allowing grade restrictions to be met with greater ease Enhanced highway safety through improved ride and skid resistance Flexibility restored by rejuvenating aged asphalt Lower engineering and traffic control costs 4 Highway Rehab Corp 2258 Route 22 Brewster, NY Tel (845) Fax (845)
5 HOT IN-PLACE RECYCLING APPLICATIONS FIRST IN THE PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE LINE OF DEFENSE Source: World Bank Each $100 spent during the first 40% drop in quality will cost $400 to $500 if delayed until the pavement loses 80% of its original quality HOT IN-PLACE RECYCLING THE ENERGY SAVING METHOD 5
