1 SGUL VPN Connection Guide for Mac OS X (Lion / 10.7)

2 Connecting to the SGUL VPN for Users of Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) Prerequisites You must make sure you are registered to use the Janet Roaming Service. If you have not done so already please follow this link to register for the JANET roaming service: This guide was written using OS X , however the procedure is similar for 10.6 and A note on passwords. Please remember that SGUL passwords expire after 90 days. If you are using an SGUL Windows 7 Desktop PC, you will be notified 7 days in advance. Mac users do not currently receive these notifications. If you are working off-site for an extended period of time then you may wish to first register an address against your IT account so you can carry out a password reset without needing to visit SGUL. You can do this on the Portal: Off-site password resets can be carried out using the Forgotten Password found at If your password hasn t yet expired but you wish to change it, you can do so here:

3 1) From the Dock, or the Applications folder, open System Preferences, then click Network. Or, click the WiFi icon on the menu bar and choose Open Network Preferences. 2) Click the + symbol above the padlock. This window will appear; fill it in as shown here, then click Create.

4 3) You ll be taken to this screen. Complete it as shown, substituting username for your SGUL username. It s recommended to tick the Show VPN status box as this will give you an easy way to connect and disconnect from the menu bar without having to open System Preferences each time. If you are a student, then use vpn.student.sgul.ac.uk as the Server Address. 4) Click the Authentication Settings button. Type your SGUL password into the password box, then click OK.

5 5) You ll return to the previous screen. Click the Advanced button. On this screen, tick the Send all traffic over VPN connection box, then OK.

6 6) You ll return to this screen. Click Connect to connect.

7 7) Once you re connected, you ll see this appear where Not Connected is shown. If you ticked the Show VPN Status tickbox then you ll also have a notification in the menu bar. You re now connected! Don t forget that *all* internet traffic will now be routed via SGUL s servers and may be slower than usual.

8 To Disconnect There are two ways to disconnect. 1) If you ticked the Show VPN status tickbox when setting up the VPN, you can use the VPN menu on the menu bar to disconnect. 2) If you didn t tick the tickbox, then you ll need to open Network in System Preferences and use the Disconnect button in there see previous page for a screenshot. Don t forget you can access Network settings by clicking on the WiFi icon in the menu bar and choosing Open Network Preferences. How to map network drives 1) Connect to the VPN 2) In Finder, click Go then Connect to Server.

9 3) In the server address box, type in the address to the network drive you want to connect to. If you re unsure what the address is, contact the helpdesk they can look up the paths to any network drives you have access to. Here are a couple of common drives: H: drive smb://homes1.sgulad.sgul.ac.uk/username (where username is your SGUL username) N: drive smb://data1.sgulad.sgul.ac.uk/sgul Hint: You can use the + button next to the address bar to add a network drive to the Favorites list so you don t have to type the full address next time. 4) When prompted, type in your username, prefixed by SGULAD, then your full password. Your drive will appear shortly afterwards, and will also show up on your desktop, if that setting is enabled on your Mac. Hint: If you want to have your Mac remember the password, then tick the remember this password in my keychain box. You may be prompted to type in the password for your Mac.

10 Disconnecting from Network Drives 1) Close any open programs that are using the network drives (for example, open documents in Word) 2) Right-click on the drive on your desktop and choose Eject <drivename>. If your Mac is configured to not show network drives on the desktop, you can use the Eject button next to the drive from any Finder window it will show the server name (shares1/homes1) instead of the drive name. Note that this will disconnect ALL drives that are hosted on that server, whereas disconnecting from the desktop will only disconnect the specific drive you select. If you want to configure Finder to show your network drives on the desktop, follow the three steps on the next page.

11 Configuring Finder to show Network Drives on the Desktop 1) In Finder, click the Finder menu, then Preferences. 2) Make sure Connected servers is ticked. In this window, you can also configure Finder to show you other drives on your desktop. 3) Close the window when you ve finished.
