5 The Level 5 CPD Certificate in Strategic Teaching Support for Dyslexia and Literacy What will I gain from doing the Level 5 Certificate Course? This course is designed to: provide participants with the technical knowledge and skills needed to put into practice the theoretical understanding gained from prior study provide the technical knowledge necessary to foster language awareness in learners with dyslexia. give an in-depth understanding of the rationale for some tried and tested resources such as Alpha to Omega. explain the placement process to provide participants with the necessary background knowledge and skills to place learners at the correct stage of an intervention programme. provide advice and practice in structured lesson planning to ensure that participants learn to apply the principles of structured, sequential, multisensory and cumulative tuition during the 11 week teaching intervention programme. give successful participants the knowledge and skills to place learners on, and deliver, an appropriately individualised, structured, cumulative, multisensory literacy programme. Demands of the course The Certificate is a demanding level 5 programme. Although the course is delivered through online learning, enabling a flexible form of study, participants will need to develop good personal time management and to hone the study skills relevant to e-learning. Participants will require a quiet and clear space in which to work. Participants will need to be able to balance the demands of their studies with existing work and home commitments in order to gain the qualification. Candidates must be able to undertake a Teaching Intervention Programme within the third unit of the Certificate programme. This intervention will be over a period of 8-11 weeks. Where will I study? The Certificate in Strategic Teaching Support course uses the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) known as Moodle as the method of delivery. The core curriculum is delivered by means of a range of e- learning resources. These include presentations, articles, exercises, videos and follow-up activities and tasks for participants to carry out at intervals. This course includes a Teaching Intervention Programme which the participant will undertake with one learner, either within their school/work environment or at the learner s home. How will I be taught? Each participant has a personal tutor who supports them through the 3 unit courses which make up the Certificate programme. The participant may work with different tutors on the 3 units. Participants also work together with their colleagues on the course via contributions to discussions on Moodle forums. This enables all those involved to get to know one another and to develop a community of learning practice with other participants and tutors as the course progresses. How will I be assessed? Assessment is continuous and will include written assignments, practical activities and contribution to Moodle forums. As part of the assessment of practical tutoring, participants will be required to record a minimum of one lesson with their learner for tutor observation. Dyslexia Action Training and Professional Development, February 2013 Page 5 of 13
6 Participants will be supported by tutors who are experienced practitioner in the field of dyslexia. Assignments will be submitted to the tutor via Moodle on a regular basis. There are no examinations. How much time will I need to devote to the course? The Certificate requires between 5 and 10 hours of study per week. This includes the time needed for planning and delivering the Teaching Intervention Programme. Will I be doing practical exercises with a learner/group of learners? Participants will be working with learners on practical elements of some Units. This will give the opportunity to integrate theory with practice. The learner required within Unit 2 for practice of core lesson routines can be a family member. The learner required for the Placement session must not be a family member. This is the learner the participant will be working with for the Unit 3 Teaching Intervention Programme. The learner required for the Teaching Intervention Programme within Uni t 3 must not be a family member. The criteria for selection of a learner for the Teaching Intervention Programme: minimum age of 7, maximum age of 14 should be underachieving in literacy (it is not a criteria that the learner has a diagnosis of dyslexia) English must be the language the learners predominantly use in school to access the curriculum. Learners who are struggling with English as an additional language are not suitable for the practical elements of the courses. All lessons within the Teaching Intervention Programme must be delivered in English. Avoid a learner with a complicated learning profile or with social or behavioural problems The learner selected for the Teaching Intervention Programme must be available for the duration of the Unit 3 course. If the learner is going to be away for more than 2 weeks during this time he/she will not be suitable for this intervention. It is the responsibility of participants to select suitable learners to work with. Unit 3: Participants will have a one hour lesson with the learner each week for 8-11 weeks. Prior to the lessons commencing, the participants will work with the learner within Unit 2 to determine the starting point within the teaching programme. This will require a placement session of 1-2 hours duration. Will I need to have a DBS check? As a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure is a requirement for working with children and young people, the person you choose to use for any practical teaching should be someone within your school or workplace, where you will already have a DBS Enhanced Disclosure. If you choose to work with someone from outside that environment then you will have to apply for a DBS check through Dyslexia Action and pay an additional fee of 60. You should allow AT LEAST 6 WEEKS to process any DBS application and this must be in place before any face-to-face work with a learner. Please visit: for further information. We reserve the right to request this information from you or to terminate a programme where we feel it is not in the interests of the learner to continue. Dyslexia Action Training and Professional Development will not assume responsibility nor will accept liability incurred as a result of any participant or learner being engaged in this programme. 11 What kind of technical equipment will be required for the course? You will need regular access to the Internet and a personal (home not work) (see further details below) in order to access the teaching materials and participate in the programme. This is because the main elements of the course are distributed via the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) over the Internet. See: Minimum Hardware Requirements To access our virtual learning environment, any computer capable of browsing the internet will suffice. Most participants have no problems accessing course materials using an Apple Mac Computer. However please note that we are unable to offer technical support for such users. Minimum Software Requirements You will need to use an office suite such as Microsoft Office or the free Open Office (or any other software capable of saving documents in formats compatible with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel). You will also need a PDF viewer such as Adobe Reader or FoxIT (downloadable free) and multimedia player (free VLC recommended). Internet Connection A cable or DSL Broadband connection is highly recommended. Mobile broadband varies widely depending on location but when reliable, it can be used to access most content including live webinars. Note that many mobile broadband providers impose limits on monthly data usage. You can expect to use 3-5GB a month. Moodle can be accessed via dial-up, although larger files will take some time to download and most multi-media content may not be streamed live. Any modern web browser is acceptable but Firefox is strongly recommended. Internet Explorer version 6 or below is no longer supported and may result in incompatibilities. Account Participants will need to have their own personal home account. This should not be a private work account. Dyslexia Action cannot communicate with participants or register them on Moodle except via a personal account. Please note that you must not use an account that is shared with colleagues or family members either when you register on Moodle VLE or during the course as this would contravene the requirements of the Data Protection Act. Participants who do not have a personal address at the start of the course must set up their own account straight away. This is easy to do and is free with Googl , Yahoo or the Internet Service Provider of your broadband. Use of Hotmail is discouraged following our experiences of accounts being taken over and then sending spam to all contacts.
