Searching CINAHL & PubMed Meagan Stanley Research & Instructional Librarian (Nursing) Allyn & Betty Taylor Library Friday, October 1 st, 2010
Today 1. CINAHL A. Building Your Search (Subject Headings and Field Codes) B. Saving Searches & Creating Alerts ( My EbscoHost ) C. Exporting References to RefWorks 2. PubMed A. Building Your Search (MeSH) B. Saving Searches & Creating Alerts ( My NCBI ) C. Exporting References to RefWorks D. Additional Features: Journals Database, Single Citation Matcher
Subject Headings/Controlled Vocabulary/ MeSH What are subject headings? Subject headings, also called controlled vocabulary, are standardized terms used to describe the contents of an article. Subject headings are used instead of keywords when searching for articles by topic. Subject headings in PubMed are called MeSH. MeSH is also used in CINAHL, along with CINAHL subject headings.
MeSH Advantages/Disadvantages o Finds all MEDLINE references indexed with a specific heading - will not find relevant references that have yet to be fully indexed (PreMEDLINE, Epub ahead of print) o Consistent vocabulary - you do not need to use all of the variations in word endings or spellings when searching o May take a few years for an index heading to be created for a new topic
Keyword Advantages/Disadvantages o Can find in-process records (Pre-MEDLINE) that do not yet have MeSH terms assigned, as well as publisher supplied citations and E-Pub ahead of print (PubMed) o Finds references with specific word in title or abstract o Can use 'buzzwords' to find references -works if the author has written them in title or abstract
Today s search question Is there research that suggests breast feeding can reduce a women s chance of developing breast cancer?
Consumer Health Info/News Stories
Seven Steps to Database Searching 1. State your search question/statement 2. Isolate the main concepts 3. Identify controlled vocabulary and/or keywords 4. Search each concept separately 5. Combine search sets for final results 6. Evaluate 7. Revise search (if necessary)
CINAHL o The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) contains citations from a wide range of nursing disciplines o Indexes nearly 3000 journals, over 2.2 million records dating back to 1981 o For a list of titles with coverage in CINAHL visit this page
Create Your Own Account in CINAHL Step 1: Sign In
Step 2: Create a new Account
Step 3: Enter your information... Doesn t have to be your UWO username and password (but it might be easier to remember) Step 4: Submit
Now You Can Save Your Search History Allows you to revise your search strategy at anytime & set up an alert Use the Save Searches /Alerts command
1. State your search question/statement Is there research that suggests breast feeding can reduce a women s chance of developing breast cancer?
2. Isolate the main concepts Is there research that suggests breast feeding can reduce a women s chance of developing breast cancer?
3. Identify controlled vocabulary
4. Search each concept separately
5. Combine search sets for final results
6. Evaluate
7: Revise Search If you aren t finding relevant articles, you may need to revise your search: Maybe you didn t use the most appropriate subject headings? Try adding other search terms to your search. Maybe your search is too narrow? Try combining your search again, but without all your search terms. Maybe your search is too broad? Try adding other search terms to your search.
Searching CINAHL using Field Codes Field codes are used when you are searching for a publication title, author, journal, ISSN, etc. Example: o AU Lashinger, H. o SO The International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship
Searching CINAHL using Field Codes Make sure to un-check subject terms!
Searching CINAHL for a known citation Rivera, A.M. (2009). Keeping the focus on shortening the nursing shortage. Nurse Leader, 7, doi: /j.mnl/ Make sure to un-check subject terms!
CINAHL Searching
Time for a coffee break?
PubMed o PubMed is an international bibliographic database of over 4500 biomedical journals. It covers the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system and the preclinical sciences. o Developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). o Medline is the largest component of PubMed o It is a freely accessible database of journal citations and abstracts
Create Your Own Account in PubMed Step 1: My NCBI
Step 2: Register for an account
Step 3: Enter your information... Doesn t have to be your UWO username and password (but it might be easier to remember) Step 4: Register
Now You Can Save Your Search History o Allows you to re-run your search strategy at anytime & set up an alert o Use the Save Search command
1. State your search question/statement Is there research that suggests breast feeding can reduce a women s chance of developing breast cancer?
2. Isolate the main concepts Is there research that suggests breast feeding can reduce a women s chance of developing breast cancer?
3. Identify Controlled Vocabulary (find MeSH in Search Details)
Locating MeSH in PubMed If your search term did not map to the correct term, you can run a search in the MeSH database to search for more relevant terms
Searching for Specifics in PubMed o PubMed does not use field codes o You can simply type the author name or publication name in the search box and run the search
Additional Features in PubMed: Single Citation Matcher & Journals Database
Journals Database ouseful when trying to locate the abbreviated or full spelling of a journal
Single Citation Matcher o Useful when trying to locate an article with limited citation details: Author: Valentine Date: 2001 Topic: conflict management.
Single Citation Matcher
