Sunderland has over 100 years experience of teaching engineering The University of Sunderland was the first university to introduce a sandwich year in Mechanical Engineering Students rated our BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and BEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering courses 100% for Overall Student Satisfaction, according to the National Student Survey 2016 AMAP The Institute for Automotive, Manufacturing and Advanced Practice The research carried out in AMAP, where relevant, is fed into undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to enrich teaching which ensures a relevant and current context. AMAP are also able to provide access to industrial expertise and a range of state-of-the-art digital hardware and software technologies in the area of Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and digital design technology. Students often make use of this facility during their studies and particularly during their final year project. Accreditation with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) The BEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering, BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering courses are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as partially fulfilling the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Accreditation is an assurance that our courses meet the standards set by the Engineering Council. This is the highest level attainable for any undergraduate course. As well as increased employment potential, graduates from an accredited course are typically able to fast track the process of achieving CEng status. Industry Links The department works closely with industry including local, national and multinational firms. We have developed excellent relationships with a number of major companies such as Nissan Manufacturing UK, Fabricom Offshore Services, Gestamp Tallent Limited and GlaxoSmithKline. 3 Our Courses BEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering UCAS CODE: H3WF This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to launch a career in the automotive industry or in its supply chain industries. On this course you will study the essential mathematics and engineering science that underpins automotive engineering with an emphasis on the mechanical aspects. Topics that are particular to their discipline include the thermodynamics of engines, automotive electrical technology, vehicle drive train and chassis systems. The University of Sunderland proved to be the best choice I made. Lecturers are helpful and the facilities give you the chance to study. Stefan Blaga, BEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering BEng (Hons) Manufacturing Engineering* UCAS CODE: H701 This course will provide you with the necessary skills you will need to work effectively in a modern manufacturing engineering environment. The course will provide you with a good range of engineering skills and knowledge not only in the area of manufacturing engineering and management but also in both the mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines. As a professional manufacturing engineer you will need to be able to apply management techniques to ensure satisfactory and timely completion of projects, and plan for these appropriately. You may also be required to implement and manage the maintenance procedures that are required to make sure the machines running within the company are running reliably and productively. The specialist knowledge and skills required to do this effectively are provided across a number of modules. Employability in the manufacturing industry is a key feature of this course and you will develop transferable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as essential engineering skills. *At the time of print (August 2016) this course is currently not accredited by the IET. 4 The University of Sunderland offers an outstanding engineering environment 5

4 BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering UCAS CODE: H3W2 Mechanical Engineering is perhaps the broadest of all engineering disciplines. It covers subjects as diverse as thermodynamics, design, and mechanics of machines, to state-of-the-art technological solutions such as finite element analysis, computer-aided design (CAD), and computational fluid dynamics. Mechanical engineering offers graduates a choice of careers within design, process, manufacturing and management. You could find yourself working within a manufacturing environment, the automotive sector, a design company or even power generation. Your transferrable skills will open a lot of doors. the Studying at Sunderland has created so many opportunities and I have taken up every one. I wanted to use my time at university to make me the best person possible at the end, so that I would be more attractive to future employers and hopefully walk into a job when I graduate. Daniel Okolo BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering This course is for people looking for skills and knowledge in electronic and electrical engineering as well as in management. It provides particular emphasis to the fields of digital and analogue electronics, industrial control systems design and electrical power systems and machines. The main employment areas within electronic and electrical engineering include: electrical supply and distribution, power systems, electrical machinery, instrumentation and control in the manufacturing, oil, gas, utilities and pharmaceutical industries, electronic circuit design for communications, the automotive, aviation and medical systems. 6 The University of Sunderland offers an outstanding engineering environment 7

5 In addition to our 3/4 year courses we also offer other engineering related courses. Extended Programme Science - Engineering Pathway These are four-year courses, made up of one-year foundation course which allows you to progress straight onto a three-year engineering undergraduate course. The foundation course provides you with a solid grounding in Engineering, as well as the study skills you need to tackle a degree. This course can provide an alternative route onto an Engineering programme for people with the following situations: You have relevant industrial experience but lack formal entry qualifications You have previously studied at A Level, but failed to gain enough UCAS points for entry onto an undergraduate Engineering course You are returning to education and lack the formal entry qualifications required for an undergraduate Engineering course You want to refresh your Engineering knowledge and study skills Routes include: Mechanical Engineering UCAS CODE: H300 Automotive Engineering UCAS CODE: H330 Electronic and Electrical Engineering UCAS CODE: H602 BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering (1 Year Top-Up) UCAS CODE: H600 This course is for people who want to top-up an HND (or similar) to a full honours degree. It includes a major project related to your selected topic of electrical engineering. The project needs to demonstrate the skills expected of degree-level students, including a clear argument, rigorous data, critical analysis and solid conclusions. BEng (Hons) Manufacturing Engineering (1 Year Top-Up) UCAS CODE: H700 This course is for people who want to top-up an HND in manufacturing engineering (or similar) to a full honours degree. You will develop skills and knowledge in operations management and the design process. 7 Placements* To further enhance employability we encourage you to apply for a 48-week placement between your second and final year. It effectively becomes a third year of a four year course. Placements are usually paid with an average salary of 14,000-18,000 a year depending on your location. Placements are an excellent opportunity to put your learning into practice and understand the context for your new knowledge. The contacts made and experience gained during placements can also be valuable for future job offers. As well as assessments that count towards your degree, there are also on-going assessments for feedback and consolidating your learning. Assessment methods include exams, multiple-choice tests and projects. 8 Formula Student Team Formula student is an international competition in which undergraduate students design, build and race their own single seater racing car. The annual project provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate their skills, ingenuity and enthusiasm. The project not only incorporates engineering intuition but aspects of management and marketing. Formula Student provides a valuable learning experience as well as giving the student key skills that help to increase employability. What are the benefits? You will develop experience, skills and professionalism as a hands on engineer, with a keen awareness of the often competing pressures of performance, cost, safety, reliability and regulatory compliance. A chance to travel to Silverstone. Training in CAD packages, welding courses and other essential skill sets. The experience may help you identify an employer for your placement or find fulltime employment after graduating. Formula student puts into practice the theoretical knowledge gained as an engineering student, helping encapsulate a real life perspective. It helps bridge the gap between individual development and input as part of a team. 10 Career opportunities Sunderland has a great reputation with employers. As an engineering graduate from Sunderland you could soon be earning between 20,000 and 30,000 a year. Our engineering courses help you take up these rewarding opportunities. 96% of Sunderland s engineering and technology graduates who are in employment within six months, are in graduate level jobs, according to Unistats This shows that there is considerable demand among employers for people with the right mix of skills and experience. Our recent graduates have gone on to work for companies such as Aston Martin, McLaren Automotive, General Motors, Jaguar, Perkins Engines, Nissan Technical Centre at Cranfield, Nissan Manufacturing UK (Washington) and Parametrics Technology. Other graduates conduct research within major automotive manufacturers such as Ford, Vauxhall and Nissan. I learnt a lot from an engineering perspective while in the Formula Student team. Being a woman isn t an issue. The automotive industry is about driving customer focused results in a timely manner with integrity. As long as you have the skills to deliver, you don t mind the occasional unsocial hour, and if you are prepared to learn, you ll go far.
