1 Creating s Accelerated Geometry/Algebra 2 Innovation Project Purpose: For this project you will be working as a group of two to investigate and create tessellations. alternate display that will summarize what you have learned during your study of the unit on linear equations and inequalities. You may not work on this project alone. Your group participation is an integral part of your grade, therefore, if you do not work as a group, the highest score you can get for this project is 50%. Team : All team members must play an active role in completing this project. Each person will take responsibility for completing certain jobs. In order to ensure that this happens, each team member will grade the other member of their team at the end of the project using the attached peer evaluation form. If you do not participate in the completion of this activity, you will not receive the credit for this assignment. Technology Requirements: The use of technology is required in order to complete this project. The internet will be used to investigate tessellations and to research facts about M.C. Escher. Also, all written portions of the project must be typed. Grading: This project will count as test grade for term 2. You will be graded using the attached rubric as well as your peer evaluation form. In addition, this project will also be used to assess your progress in the Innovation learning expectation. This grade will be a part of your overall grade and will also be reported out separately on your second term report card. Ten points will be deduced from your grade for each day the project is late. Project Requirements: The following information must be included on your project: : Use the internet or other sources to answer the following questions in paragraph format. Use proper grammar and spelling. Reference sources. o What is a tessellation? o What are the three major types of tessellations? Explain each type. o Identify the properties of tessellations. o Give examples of tessellations in nature. o Give examples of man-made tessellations. Creation a : o Create a colorful semi-regular tessellation on a 8x11 piece of paper. o Explain why your pattern tessellates. M.C. Escher Essay: Write a 1-2 page paper on the mathematical art of Escher. Use proper grammar and spelling The paper should at least include the following:
2 o His background Who is Escher? Where was he born? What was education? o What was Escher s contributions to art and mathematics? o How does Escher integrate mathematics with art? Give specific examples of his work. o What are some interesting facts about Escher? The essay should be typed using 12 point font with double spacing. Include a reference page. Create Your Own : o The appearance of your tessellation should be colorful, neat and original. o Your tessellation (pattern) should cover a 8X11 piece of paper. (no gaps or unintentional white spaces). o You are to turn in the template figure you used to create your tessellation. o What to do Begin by creating a template using at least 1 of the nibbling methods (translation or rotation). Be sure to label all the pieces. See me if you re not sure if your template will work. Index cards work best. Once the template has been created, place your template at any of the four corners of your poster board and trace your first figure. Since it will no longer have square edges, you will need to let it hang off the edges of the poster board to get it started. Once your figure has been traced, translate it or rotate it and trace your next figure (whether you translate it or rotate it depends on the nibbling technique you used). Continue step 3 until the entire page is covered. All your figures on the paper should fit together so that it looks like a puzzle. Figures at the edge will only be partial images Once you have the page covered in your tessellation, begin to add color in the figure. The figured can be animated as well, meaning you created a familiar image rather than just a design. Be have fun with the project! What to turn in: 1. Cover page (Title, Name, Class) M.C.
