1 8 th Grade Summer Reading It s no secret that school will be back in a flash - so make sure you re reading everyday AND that you complete your summer reading homework on time. Assignment Checklist Check each item off as you accomplish them. Keep yourself on track and organized! I finished my first independent reading book this summer. I completed one end of book assignment for my first book. I finished my second independent reading book this summer. I completed another end of book assignment for my second book. I am ready to take a comprehension quiz on each book I read. This packet belongs to

The New York Public library is also issuing a challenge to NYC s student this year: read for 20 minutes! 3 Summer Reading Assignments You must complete TWO of these assigments for the fall. Directions: Your job is to read at least two independent reading books this summer. You can read more than two, in fact you probably should, and after reading them you will complete ONE of the following assignments for each book. Book Assignment Options To be completed after you finish reading each book! Write a Character Alphabet Choose a character you liked and then create sentences based on the alphabet scheme that demonstrate your knowledge of the character. For example, if after reading Spite Fences, you decided to write Zeke s alphabet it could start like this: A is for the ABUSE Zeke took at the hands of a racist mob. B is for his BENDING OVER BACKWARDS to make sure he could work in secret. Fan Fiction You become the author. Craft the lost chapter or lost scene from the novel. Is there a moment between two characters you know happened but the author didn t write? Write it yourself! Make sure you try and sound as much like the real author as possible. Make sure you write down where this secret scene takes place in the original story. This added section should be at least 2-3 pages long. Make a Pamphlet Think of an issue that was very important to your character and then create a pamphlet aimed at persuading people how important that issue is. Include facts, quotes, pictures/graphics, etc. For example, for Charlotte from The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, you might want to create a pamphlet explaining why women should have more choices. Commercial Make a commercial for the book. You may create this by drawing each frame, creating a PowerPoint presentation, or actually filming it. Your commercial should include information about the plot, the author, major characters, and important themes. Be sure not to give away the ending! If the commercial is in PowerPoint, it should be at least 10 slides in length. If the commercial is filmed, it should be between 1 and 2 minutes. Otherwise, the work should be 2-3 pages. Music To Your Ears What music would be in the soundtrack to this book? Choose at least three songs and explain how the music relates to charaters or situations in the story. Print out/write the full lyrics and explain how each line or chunk of lines fits the story. Can be presented as a booklet or as a collage on a poster. Comic Strip Select your favorite scene from the book. Create a detailed comic strip of the scene, conveying the setting and the most exciting aspects of the action and the character. Try to quote as much of the important narration and dialogue as possible. When drawing the characters, be sure to label the important parts of the character s physical attributes, emotions, behavior, and possessions. Include at least 10 frames (boxes). Dear Diary Write 3 journal entries or blog posts from the perspective of a character in the book. One journal entry should be from before the book begins or from early in the book. The second entry should be from right before or right after a major event (perhaps the climax) of the book. The final entry should be about the character s thoughts at the end of the book. Each entry should be at least one page. Create a Character s Room We learn a lot about people by what they keep in their closets, what they have on their walls, what they select to put in a room. Select a character you know well and create a living room, bedroom, kitchen, or some other room that would mean a lot to the character. Draw it or write about it, making sure to include an explanation of why you designed the room as you did. Epilogue Write an epilogue for your book. An epilogue tells the story of what happens after the last chapter of the book. You may choose to write about what happens immediately after the end of the book, or several years later. Your epilogue should imitate the author s writing style. The epilogue should be 2-3 pages long.

Observe your family s values when selecting books, but also be mindful that learning about other points of view and ways of life is an important part of a good education.
