2 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this booklet is to provide information on entrance and undergraduate awards available to deserving post-secondary students in Saskatchewan. Anyone interested in obtaining application forms, where the bulletin indicates they are needed, or in obtaining more detailed information on any of the awards, is invited to approach the contact listed. The following pages list Youth Awards offered by individual Masonic Lodges throughout the Province and through various gifts and bequests administered by the Grand Lodge of Saskatchewan Board of Trustees. The Freemasons, who are members of these Lodges, have dedicated major portions of their activities to assisting the young people of Saskatchewan through these awards and other programs implemented in their communities. 5 GRAND LODGE AWARDS EDGAR ALEXANDER GARTON SCHOLARSHIPS Number: 2 Value: $1,000 Conditions: Offered annually to undergraduate students who have completed one or more years of University, Sask. Polytechnic, or other post-secondary education. Students must be children or grandchildren of a Master Mason in good standing, a resident of Saskatchewan and attending a post-secondary institution in Saskatchewan. Selection will be based on academic achievements, sportsmanship and leadership. Must be registered for a full academic load for a full academic year as required by the institution chosen. 6 ROBINSON MEMORIAL BURSARY Number: 2 Value: $500 Conditions: Offered annually for one undergraduate from the University of Saskatchewan and one undergraduate from the University of Regina pursuing a course leading to an honours degree or a Master s degree in English, who demonstrates academic achievement, and leadership. Must be registered for a full academic load for a full academic year as required by the institution chosen. POST SECONDARY EDUCATION BURSARY Value: $500 Conditions: Offered annually to an undergraduate student from the University of Saskatchewan or the University of Regina who is a resident of Saskatchewan. 8 MASONIC YOUTH TRUST AWARD Number: 4 Value: $1,000 Conditions: Offered annually to Saskatchewan High School graduates who proceed to an institution of higher learning anywhere in Canada. Selection is based upon academic achievement, leadership skills, community and school activities, and special awards. Must be registered for a full academic load for a full academic year as required by the institution chosen. 9 GILBERT AND GAY COOK MEMORIAL AWARD Value: $1,000 Conditions: Offered annually to Saskatchewan high school graduates with preference to graduates who currently are or were members of the International Order of Job s Daughters or the Order of DeMolay and who will be entering the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan. Selection will be based upon academic achievement and a range of non-academic activities.. Must be registered for a full academic load for a full academic year as required by the institution chosen. 10 MURRAY MONTAGUE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Value: $1,000 Conditions: Offered annually to a Saskatchewan High School graduate who proceeds to an institution of higher learning anywhere in Canada. Selection is based upon academic achievement, leadership skills, community and school activities and special awards. Must be registered for a full academic load for a full academic year as required by the institution chosen. 11 INDIVIDUAL LODGE AWARDS PRINCE ALBERT - KINISTINO LODGE NO. 1 - SCHOLARHSIP Value: $1000 Conditions: $1,000 scholarship is offered to a graduating student in the Prince Albert, Shellbrook and Saskatchewan River school Division who will proceed to an institution of higher learning anywhere in Canada. The winner must be accepted and proof provided that the person is registered for a full academic year with the institution. Selection criteria includes compassion, honesty, and willingness to cooperate with teachers and fellow students and all others. Award selected in consultation with the school principal. Application forms are not required. Citizenship Award Wayne Horsman Sec. Indian Head Lodge No. 5 Box 544 Indian Head, SK S0G 2K0 QU APPELLE LODGE NO. 6 SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Value: $200 Conditions: Offered annually to any Grade 12 student who has attended James Hamblin School in Qu Appelle. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of marks, community involvement, extracurricular involvement at the school level and personal qualities. Each student is asked to submit a letter stating his qualifications for the scholarship. 12 MOOSOMIN LODGE NO. 7 JAMES MACKIE THOMPSON AND JESSIE THOMPSON SCHOLARSHIP Value: Varies from $500 to $1,200 depending on the current interest rates. Conditions: Offered annually to a Grade 12 graduating student from Rocanville High School pursuing post-secondary education. The scholarship is to be awarded on the basis of marks, extracurricular involvement at the school, community and church level, and personal qualities. Consideration may also be based on demonstrated need. Must present a receipt for payment of second semester tuition before receiving money. Must be used within 12 months of the award or it is forfeited and not awarded to any other student. Each applicant is to submit a letter stating her/his qualifications for the scholarship, together with a copy of Grade 12 marks, and two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher and one other community resident, or from two teachers. Selection will be made by the incumbent Worshipful Master of Moosomin Lodge and members of the Special Activities and Youth Committee. Apply no later than August 15 of the year of high school graduation. Maple Leaf Lodge No. 9 Box 854 Maple Creek, SK S0N 1N0 WOLSELEY - WOLSELEY-SINTALUTA LODGE NO. 10 CITIZENSHIP AWARD Number: 2 Value: $100 (each to Wolseley High School & Grenfell High School) Conditions: Offered annually to a Grade 12 student in Wolseley and Grenfell, based on community involvement, ability and willingness to work with teachers, other students and the public, and scholastic achievement. 13 REGINA - NORTH WEST MOUNTED POLICE LODGE NO. 11 DR. R. E. SMALE SCHOLARSHIP Value: $500 Conditions: Offered annually to an undergraduate student after satisfactory completion of one year University or other post-secondary education. The student must be a relative of a Mason in good standing with preference given to relatives of members of North West Mounted Police Lodge No. 11. Selection will be based upon need, academic achievement and sound character. Deadline for applications is August 15. Ken Martin, Sec. N.W.M.P. Lodge No Maple Leaf Cres. Regina, SK S4X 4N5 YORKTON LODGE NO. 12 SCHOLARSHIP Number: 3 Value: $200 To one student from each of the following schools, Yorkton Regional High School, Sacred Heart High School (Yorkton) and Melville Comprehensive School. Conditions: Offered annually to a Grade 12 student (1 each from the 3 above mentioned schools) who will be pursuing post-secondary education at a technical, vocational or trade school. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of good character, upstanding citizenship and respect for fellow students, teachers and the community. The preference will be for the scholarship to be awarded to a student who has not received any other bursaries. School Career Counselor OXBOW - ABBA LODGE NO. 15 CITIZENSHIP BURSARY Number: 3 Value: $200 Conditions: These $200 Citizenship bursaries will be presented annually to grade twelve students of Oxbow Prairie Horizons School. The staff of O.P.H.S. will select the recipients based on the following criteria: a) The recipients must have displayed good citizenship by involvement in activities intended to improve his or her community. These activities must include fields beyond school life i.e., community life. b) The recipients must display a courteous attitude toward staff and fellow students. c) The recipients need not be accepted at a post-secondary educational institution and academic achievement will not be a consideration in the selection of the recipient. d) No application is required for the award. 14 ESTEVAN -ESTEVAN LODGE NO. 25 ABBOTT SCOLARSHIP Value: $200 Conditions: Abbott Scholarship is awarded to a relative of an active mason ESTEVAN -ESTEVAN LODGE NO. 25 MASONIC AWARD Value: $700 Conditions: Estevan Masonic Award is awarded an outstanding student of Estevan Comprehensive High School who is continuing his or her education beyond Grade 12. Troy LeBlanc, Secretary Box 416 Bienfait, SK S0C 0M0 SWIFT CURRENT LODGE NO. 26 SCHOLARSHIP Value: $1000 Conditions: This $1000 scholarship is offered to a graduating student in the Chinook School Division who will proceed to an institution of higher learning anywhere in Canada. Selection is based upon community service and involvement, academic achievement and leadership skills. The winner must be registered for a full academic load for a full academic year as required by the institution chosen. The scholarship will be awarded after proof of registration in the institution. This scholarship may be held for the winning applicant for a period of up to one year. 15 NORTH BATTLEFORD - IONIC LODGE NO. 31 Value: $100 Conditions: One offered annually to a student from North Battleford who is actively engaged in formal musical training. Ionic Masonic Lodge No Gregory Drive North Battleford, SK S9A 2W6 NORTH BATTLEFORD - IONIC LODGE NO. 31 Number: 4 Value: $350 (for Leadership Camp at Wakaw Lake) Conditions: Four offered annually to students from North Battleford High Schools. Available to Senior Ring and Senior Pin at the Public and Separate High Schools. Application information available from: Career/Guidance Councilor s Office and are returned to: Don Finan, Sec. Ionic Masonic Lodge No Gregory Drive North Battleford, SK S9A 2W6 REGINA - ASSINIBOIA LODGE NO. 49 OSWELL ROBINSON MEMORIAL AWARD Number: 2 Value: $300 each Conditions: Available to deserving students who are dependents of members or deceased members of Assiniboia Lodge No. 49 or Sherwood Lodge No To be used for the purpose of furthering the education or training of the recipient. 16 REGINA - ASSINIBOIA LODGE NO OSWELL ROBINSON-ASSINIBOIA- SHERWOOD MASONIC SCHOLARSHIP AWARD FOR MUSIC Value: $500 each Conditions: Available to students in the Bachelor of Music program at the University of Regina. Selection will be based on academic achievement and musical performing ability. The Registrar s Office, University of Regina KAMSACK - KING SOLOMON LODGE NO MASONIC SHIELD AWARD AND SCHOLARSHIP Value: Criteria: The CODE OF ETHICS - MASONIC SHIELD with a $200 conditional scholarship. K.C.I. CODE OF ETHICS Method: The students of the graduating class take a secret ballot in the month preceding Awards Day for the purpose of determining a recipient. Condition: The recipient of the award must provide the Secretary-Treasurer of King Solomon Lodge No. 58 evidence of having successfully completed a post-secondary course from any acceptable institution to receive the scholarship. The recipient must be a registered student at Kamsack Comprehensive Institute, and a member of the senior graduating class. To a student with high scholastic standing who has not received another scholarship. Must present a receipt of payment of second semester tuition before receiving money. 17 UNITY - UNITY-KILWINNING LODGE NO. 73 MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP Value: $100 Conditions: Selected by the Unity Music Festival Association Bob Cumming Box 291 Unity, SK S0K 4L0 UNITY - UNITY-KILWINNING LODGE NO. 73 TOMMY RUTHERFORD MASONIC BURSARY Value: $500 Conditions: Open to students at Unity Composite High School, Macklin High School, McLurg High School in Wilkie, Cutknife High School or Luseland, High School or Denzil High School who are pursuing post-secondary education. Criteria A: To a student whose parents or grandparents are or were affiliated with any Masonic Lodge. Must submit a written letter with family connections. If two or more students are eligible, the student with the highest average will receive the bursary. Criteria B: If no Masonic relation is eligible other students can apply. Would be awarded to a student who has not won another bursary. Would be awarded to a student based on a written letter to the Unity-Kilwinning Lodge No. 73. For either A or B: Must present a receipt of payment of second semester tuition before receiving money. Must be used within twelve months of the award or is forfeited and not awarded to any other student. Apply by April 30. Bob Cumming Box 219 Unity, SK S0K 4L0 UNITY - UNITY-KILWINNING LODGE NO. 73 Value: $300 Conditions: To a student graduating from Cut Knife High School. There is a committee in Cut Knife that selects the student. All students are eligible, criteria - must complete one semester of further education. 18 LANIGAN LODGE NO HUMBOLDT COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE Number: 2 Value: $750 Conditions: Two bursaries at Humboldt Collegiate Institute. Applicants must be attendees of Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI). Deadline for application set by HCI. Keith Bird, Sec. Value: $500 Conditions: One award to a student graduating from Westcliffe Composite School in June and attending a post-secondary institution for further education leading toward a degree, diploma, certificate or license. Career Counsellor, Westcliffe Composite School Selection: Westcliffe Composite School Faculty/Committee KINDERSLEY LODGE NO MASONS BURSARY Value: $1000 Conditions: Awarded annually to a graduate of Kindersley Composite School who shall be attending an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution for further education, leading toward a degree, diploma, certificate or license. 19 KINDERSLEY LODGE NO MASONS YOUTH LEADERSHIP BURSARIES & SPONSORSHIPS Number: Six - offered to students of Kerrobert Composite School, North West Composite School (in Plenty), Kindersley Composite School, Eston Composite School, Eaton School (in Eatonia) and Westcliffe Composite School (in Marengo). Value: $100 (The student s registration fee for Leadership Camp at Wakaw Lake.) Conditions: Awarded to the SRC Presidents-elect for the school year following the Youth Leadership Camp in August. The bursary may be transferred to an SRC memberelect if the President cannot attend. Other students entering Grades 9-12 in the fall are encouraged to attend the Leadership Camp, pay their own registration fee and apply for the Lodge sponsorship (approx. $ for each student). School Career Counsellor KINDERSLEY LODGE NO JIM AND WILDA GARDNER BURSARY Value: $1000 Conditions: One bursary awarded annually to a student graduating from Kindersley Composite School who has achieved excellence in mathematics, the sciences and English and will be attending a post-secondary educational institution for further education. Career Counsellor, Kindersley Composite School KINDERSLEY LODGE NO THE FRANK KOHNE-BJARNE K. HANSEN MASONIC MEMORIAL AWARD Value: $500 Conditions: Awarded to a student graduating in June and attending a post-secondary institution for further education leading to a degree, diploma, certificate or license. This award alternates with the Angus Morrison Award. Selection: Selection criteria include any open or more of the following: academic excellence, athletic achievement or musical activities. 20 KINDERSLEY LODGE NO THE ANGUS ALEXANDER MORRISON AWARD Value: $500 Conditions: Awarded to a student graduating in June and attending a post-secondary institution for further education leading to a degree, diploma, certificate or license. This award alternates with the Frank Kohne-Bjarne Hansen Masonic Memorial. Selection: The awardee must have demonstrated a responsible attitude and leadership skills in extra-curricular activities and community events. Application forms are not required. This scholarship will be awarded alternately between Eston and Eatonia. Career Counsellor, (Eston or Eatonia) KINDERSLEY LODGE NO MASONS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE KINDERSLEY DISTRICT MUSIC FESTIVAL Value: $150 Conditions: One award to the participant selected by the Music Festival Committee Selected by Music Festival Committee SASKATOON - LODGE PROGRESS NO E. A. DAVIS MASONIC SCHOLARSHIP Value: $500 Conditions: Awardee must be a resident of Saskatchewan and be registered in a post-secondary technical school or vocational studies. Preference is given to a wife, child or grandchild of a Freemason. Selection is based on academic standing, leadership and need. Application deadline is September 30th. Youth Committee, Lodge Progress No Drinkle St. Saskatoon, SK S7J 5N7 ASSINIBOIA - ST. JOHN S LODGE NO MASONIC SCHOLARSHIP Value: $100 Conditions: Awarded annually to a deserving Grade 12 student graduating from Assiniboia Composite High School entering any post-secondary educational institution in Saskatchewan. 21 ASSINIBOIA - ST. JOHN S LODGE NO ASSINIBOIA MUSIC FESTIVAL SCHOLARSHIP Value: $50 Conditions: Awarded at the Assiniboia Music Festival. 23 WASCANA PRECEPTORY NO KNIGHTS TEMPLAR SCHOLARSHIP Value: $6,000 Conditions: This scholarship, valued at $6, is paid over the fall and winter semesters of each year with the recipient receiving $3, during each semester. To receive the second payment, the recipient must pass all courses and maintain a minimum 80% average during the fall semester. This scholarship is awarded to a University of Regina student who is registered for full time studies (minimum of 12 credit hours), entering the final year of study in a program leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Indian Fine Arts, Theatre or Visual Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education or a Bachelor of Science with a major in Biology, Chemistry or Computer Science. Must be a Saskatchewan High School graduate and have maintained a minimum 80% average in all courses during the third university year of study to be eligible.
