2 What is an Objective for a Resume? A resume objective is a short, targeted statement that clearly outlines your career direction while simultaneously positioning you as someone who fits what the employer is looking for exactly. Your objective is carefully researched and tailored to fit the job you re applying for.
3 In Other Words. It s not a generic cry to hire you, it s a very specific, very targeted way to point to yourself and say Hey, why waste your time with all these other resumes when what you re looking for is right here in front of you?
4 It s a quick summary of where you ve been so far in your career and also where you want to go with the company you are applying to.
5 When Should You Use a Resume Objective? Are you relatively new to the job search market or lack work experience? Are you changing industries? Are you targeting a specific job or position? If you answered Yes to any of of these questions, then a resume objective is for you.
6 For those of you in the middle of a career change or who might just be starting out, a resume objective statement allows you to define your goal to a potential employer something that your work history (or lack thereof) might not otherwise be able to do for you.
7 Makes sense, right? Imagine how confused a hiring manager would be if they were looking for candidates to fill an office coordinator position and you sent in a resume with 10 years of experience in marketing. Without an objective statement, the hiring manager might just assume your resume has been accidentally sent to them and simply discard it. An objective statement on a resume being submitted for a career changing position can only help you.
8 Targeting a Specific Job or Position A resume objective statement can help reinforce that idea as well as ensure that the hiring manager knows EXACTLY what you re after not just the generic I wanna work for your company because I think it ll be cool so I ll take any job you happen to have open.
9 Overall The biggest reason to put an objective on your resume is it s better than having nothing. Remember, your goal is to catch the hiring manager s eye and stand out from the rest of the paper in that pile.
10 Common Resume Objective Mistakes
11 Mistake #1 Using the same objective for every job application To obtain a job within my chosen field that will challenge me and allow me to use my education, skills and past experiences in a way that is mutually beneficial to both myself and my employer and allow for future growth and advancement.
12 Mistake #2 Making it all about you Hi, I m Joe Jobseeker and I really want a job in a company where I make a ton of money doing as little as possible. Oh, and a corner office. A company car would be nice too. While we re at it, let s talk benefits, retirement and the company vacation policy.
13 Mistake #3 Being too vague Looking for a long term full time job where I can apply my extensive skills and knowledge to the position for which I am hired.
14 Mistake #4 Going on and on and on.. Not going to put one here. Why? Because the example we were going to do was going to be so long and ridiculous that you and everyone else reading this post would just get bored and move onto another article. Just remember, it s all about short and sweet. Anything over a sentence or two is TOO LONG. Remember that.
15 Mistake #5 Adding absolutely no value To obtain a position within my chosen field where I can utilize my skills as a hardworking, well-educated employee in exchange for a steady market-fair paycheck.

17 So How do you Write a Good Resume Objective? Be specific Make sure it s tailored toward the position and the company Are you applying for 5 jobs? You should have 5 different objectives Focus on how you re a benefit to the company Not how the company can benefit you
18 So How do you Write a Good Resume Objective? Keep it valuable Make sure you point out what you bring to the table Keep it short and sweet If you are someone who is changing careers Work in how past experiences relate to future tasks The same goes for those of you who are just starting out or who are relatively inexperienced.

20 Example #1 Someone who is in the middle of a career change Experienced and accomplished political campaign manager with over ten years of experience looking to leverage extensive background in crisis management, departmental organization and mass communication into an entry-level HR assistant position with Pacific 2.1 Technologies.
21 Example #2 Someone who is in the middle of a career change To leverage my 5+ years of client-facing experience, public speaking skills, and expertise in the health care industry into a public relations role with Happy Tree Educational Animations.
22 Example #3 Someone who is less experienced or just starting out Dedicated and motivated engineering graduate seeking entry level assistant quality control manager position with Dyna Tech, LLC.
23 Example #4 Someone who is less experienced or just starting out Hard working business management graduate with proven leadership and organizational skills seeking to apply my abilities to the position of junior assistant to the CEO at Warbucks Financial.
