1 Game 6M2: Area Strand: Measures Strand Unit: Area Curriculum Objectives Covered: Recognise that the length of the perimeter of a rectangular shape does not determine the area of the shape Calculate the area of regular and irregular 2-D shapes Measure the surface area of specified 3-D shapes Calculate area using acres and hectares Identify the relationship between square metres and square centimetres Find the area of a room from a scale plan Part 1: Battle-shapes! Aim: To find out where your opponent has plotted his/her 4 different shapes ( 2 rectangles of the same area but different shapes, 1 irregular 2-D shape and 1 net of a 3-D cube or cuboid) on his/her cm 2 grid, before he/she finds out where you have plotted your 4 shapes on your grid. Activity Area: Classroom Duration: 40 mins Linkage: Shape and space Resources: 1 Battle-shapes Game Sheet for every player (photocopiable sheet attached) Scissors and glue stick for every player Pencil for every player Set Up: 1. Photocopy one of the attached Battle-shapes Game Sheet for every child in the class. 2. Give every child a scissors, a glue stick and a pencil. 3. Organise the children into pairs, to play one player against the other. 4. Ask each child to look at the example on his/her game sheet of 2 plotted rectangles of the same area but different shapes, 1 plotted irregular 2-D shape and 1 plotted net of a 3-D cube or cuboid. 5. Instruct each child to cut out the 40 square cms from his/her game sheet and to glue them anywhere on his/her grid to make 2 rectangles of the same area but different shapes, 1 irregular 2-D shape and 1 net of a 3-D cube or cuboid, like in the example. It is important that the children do not let their opponents see where they are plotting their shapes and also that their shapes all sit inside gridlines filling complete square cms rather than only parts of squares. (It is also worth mentioning to the children that they needn t cut out every individual square to make their shapes, but should cut out their largest shape in one piece first, to save time.)

2 Start Playing: 1. When both players have plotted their 4 shapes on their grids, the game can begin. 2. The first player calls out any grid reference to find out if his/her opponent has any part of any shape covering that square e.g. Have you anything on B6? 3. If he/she does have part of a shape on B6 he/she says Hit! and both players draw a tick on (or shade) that square on that grid on their game sheets to keep a record of the hit, and the player gets another turn to call out. If the B6 square is not covered by any part of a shape, the player s opponent says Miss! and both players draw an X on that square on that grid on their game sheets to keep a record of the miss, and the player s turn is over. 4. The second player then takes his/her turn. 5. Whenever a player hits the last remaining square in any of his/her opponent s shapes, and has therefore found the entire shape, the opponent must let the player know that he/she has found the whole shape. 6. The player who found the shape must then give the following 5 pieces of information about the shape: a) Name b) Number of sides c) Length of each side d) Total perimeter e) Area e.g. Your shape is a net of a cuboid, with 12 sides. The top is 2cm across, the next side goes downwards for 2cm, the next side goes across from left to right for 1cm, the next side goes downwards for 1cm, the next side goes across from right to left for 1cm, the next side goes downwards for 1 cm, the next side goes across from right to left for 2cm, the next side goes upwards for 1cm, the next side goes across from right to left for 1cm, the next side goes upwards for 1cm, the next side goes across from left to right for 1cm and the final side goes upwards for 2cm. The total perimeter of the shape is 16cm and the total area is 10cm The player s opponent verifies the information and then takes his/her turn. 8. If a player discovers that his/her opponent s net of a cube or cuboid is in fact an incorrect net (in other words it would never fold to make its 3-D shape), the player is awarded the chance to win one of his/her opponent s remaining shapes. The player s opponent must tell him/her all of the corner point grid references of any one of his/her remaining undiscovered shapes, which the player should tick/shape on the appropriate grid. If the player can work out the total perimeter and area of the shape from that information, he/she can claim the shape. 9. The first player to find all 4 of their opponent s shapes is the winner. * Explain to the children that they must cut out their 40 shaded 1cm 2 pieces to stick onto their grid. Show them the example grid below and remind them not to let their opponents see what they are doing. Example grid

He/She must then give the following 5 pieces of information about the shape: a) Name b) Number of sides c) Length of each side d) Total perimeter e) Area The first player to find all of his/her opponent s shapes is the winner!

4 Part 2: What Size is Croke Park? Aim: To work out the area of the Croke Park pitch and a dressing room with your partner. Activity Area: Classroom Duration: 20 mins Linkage: Shape and space Resources: 1 Task Sheet for each pair of children (photocopiable sheet attached) Pencil and paper for pair of children Set Up: 1. Organise the children into pairs. (They can remain with their partners from Part 1.) 2. Photocopy one of the attached Task Sheets for each pair of children. 3. Give each pair of children a Task Sheet and a pencil and paper. Start Playing: 1. The children discuss and complete their Task Sheets with their partners. The dimensions of the pitch are 144.5m x 88m. What is the area of the pitch? If 1 acre = square metres, how many acres of land does the area of the pitch cover? If 1 hectare = square metres, how many hectares of land does the area of the pitch cover? 3) Something to ponder Have a look at your Battle-shape grid from earlier. How many square centimetres are in the grid? Now can you figure out how many square centimetres would be in a square metre? Remember this is not the same as asking how many centimetres are in a metre. Why not?
