2 Background Background The idea of providing a telephone point to most of the rooms in a modern domestic residence is not a new one. In-fact this has been considered a standard feature of most new dwellings constructed in the last decade. The need to hide wires and cables makes the case for installation of the necessary cabling as part of the build process, just like the electrical installation. The same consideration is also valid for signal distribution with the cabling being installed as a part of the build process. It is easy to see that the Telephone and antenna point per room concept is inadequate when considering support of new and emerging technologies. Another example which highlights the growth trend of digital technologies is that of digital photography, digital video and the desire to share such material with friends and family. The existence of on-line photo albums, the need to upload images to them and the success of on-line digital image printing services providing high quality prints with fast delivery re-enforces the need for connectivity. While traditional home telephony / broadcast signal distribution requirements are still important we also have to consider the proliferation of digital connectivity requirements and the introduction of new broadband Internet services. Broadband enables the provision of rich interactive services, superior on-line gaming, video on demand and direct purchase of digitally formatted media; music, video and imagery, from on-line retailers. Access to these services from all living areas of a dwelling will be desirable sooner rather than later. PAGE 2

3 Where services previously described have yet to make it into the mainstream there is still a need for the Home Network. It is common to find multiple personal computers within a single dwelling; the ability to provide shared Internet access for WEB and in a costeffective manner is a basic requirement. A home network offers the connectivity to provide this. The broadband revolution indicates that this will be a standard requirement in the near future. Many games consoles offer the possibility of Multi-Player gaming. While many games offer this feature as standard it can not be used without connectivity between consoles. Where multiple consoles are situated within the same dwelling the connection is direct through the home network. Where the consoles are geographically separated the Internet becomes the channel of connectivity and the LAN becomes the method of connecting the console to the Internet. The move toward digital broadcasting necessitates the need for decoders and settop boxes. It is not yet common for massmarket consumer equipment to incorporate such devices and each needs its own connection to an aerial receiving the broadcast signal. Consideration must be given to the distribution of such signals through the installed cabling without the need to add more. Household security is also entering a new phase and simple CC systems are being deployed in domestic environments. CC does not only have to be dedicated to the task of monitoring property, many safety applications exist including baby monitoring and door entry. The Connectix Home Networking system offers an integrated distribution solution for all of these technologies. The broadcasting industry has seen many developments; a number of different technologies exist. For the options of terrestrial analogue, terrestrial digital and satellite are available to most residences. 4 Distribution System Distribution System The distribution system, designed to work in conjunction with Sky/Sky+ satellite receivers, provides two functions in one unit: It acts as a central hub into which all incoming broadcast signals are gathered together (including the RF output of the Sky receiver) and distributes all of these to up to eight rooms. In total nine rooms can be served by the distribution system; eight are connected to the distribution amplifier the ninth is the location of the satellite receiver, this is typically designated the Living Room. The Living room requires two cables running back to the cabinet installation location while the rooms connected to the amplifier require only one. Being aimed at Sky/Sky+ users it incorporates a facility to allow remote control of the Sky receiver from any of the eight rooms connected to the distribution amplifier. For this facility a Link remote eye is required in each room from which control is to be allowed. It may also be desirable to purchase extra remote control units to leave in each room. Various options exist to enhance and extend the system. A few examples include; Installation of a satellite receiver in one or more rooms fed from the distribution amplifier. In this case each room link will require an Expander at the Home cabinet and a Diplexer in the room. The satellite dish will need to be equipped with a quad output LNB. In total a quad LNB can support four receivers. If Sky+ is in use a further two receivers could be connected to the system. Distribution of modulated CC camera pictures to all rooms connected. Most CC cameras output a composite video signal. For this to be distributed by the system a modulator is required for each camera. The system offers an auxiliary input for CC. Remote view and control of DVD player located in the living room. Typically a DVD player will have a composite video output - to incorporate this into the system a modulator is required. The Link Plus enhancement can be used to provide a route for remote control of the DVD player from any connected room equipped with a Link Eye. 6 System Components System Components The Connectix Home Cabinet The Connectix Home Cabinet is the centre point of the system. Cabling for the distribution system and the Category5e generic cabling system converges here. Cabling from broadcast signal receiving equipment and services such as telephone lines for voice and broadband also need to come to the cabinet. Designed to match the format of other domestic building service enclosures, it has a low profile, can be recessed into a stud work wall or surface mounted. It is made from powder coated metal and has a hinged, lockable access door. Telephone Host Panel The telephone host panel is required to share an incoming telephone line allowing it to be 'patched' to any room outlet on the Category5e generic cabling system. The panel is designed to support 3 incoming lines, each can then be patched through to a maximum of 4 room outlets. The telephone host panel also allows ADSL broadband to be presented at any desired outlet in the same way. Distribution Cabling All signals concerned with the distribution system are RF (radio frequency) and run from the home cabinet to serviced rooms across co-ax cabling. Two runs are required to the satellite receiver location (typically the Living Room) all other rooms only require one run. A range of wall plates exist for termination of the co-ax in the rooms. The living room requires a plate providing outputs for terrestrial signals (radio and ) and the satellite dish connection for the receiver. It also provides a connection point for the satellite receiver RF2 output which feeds the signals back into the distribution amplifier. The non-living room plates are available as either single output or dual output and FM. PAGE 6

7 Category5e Generic cabling Telephone and Home Networking services are distributed on a standards based Cat5e cabling infrastructure capable of supporting many other applications. Typically two cable runs will be required to each room, both can be presented on a single wall plate. In some cases it will be desirable to have connectivity available at multiple locations in a room. For example the Living room may have a point with 2 cables installed near to the outlet; one for satellite receiver connection to the telephone line for interactive service access, the other for connection of a game console to the LAN. Other points may be placed close to typical seating positions to allow connection of a laptop computer for LAN and broad band Internet or connection of a telephone. The Category5/5e distribution cables routed to the living spaces terminate at a patch panel in the home cabinet. A patch cable is used within the cabinet to connect a patch panel socket to a LAN switch, the telephone host panel or even another patch panel socket. This facility gives the flexibility to configure any single cable as a data cable for computer connection, a telephone extension cable or simply a point to point link for other applications. LAN Switch A 10/100Mbps Ethernet Switch provides the facility to connect computers and games consoles. The Category5/5e distribution cables routed to the living spaces terminate at a patch panel in the home cabinet. A patch cable is used to configure a room outlet as a LAN connection by connecting the relevant patch panel socket to the switch. This gives the flexibility to configure any single cable as a data cable for computer connection, a telephone extension cable or simply a point to point link for other applications should it be required.
