Emotional Intelligence Issues for Young Professionals Tuesday January 12, P.M. YOUNG PROFESSIONALS LUNCHTIME LEARNING WEBINAR with Tom Pierce, MBA Presented by ASAE & The Center's Young Professionals Committee & ASAE CareerHQ.org Tom Pierce President PierceManagementDevelopment.com This is me. Well, actually it s s just a picture of me. But the voice you hear is really me. I never use a stunt double in my Webinars.
Since when do emotions have anything to do with management? The dawning realization, worldwide, that Emotional Intelligence has everythingto do with management It was the best of times, it was the worst of times A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens, 1859 Think about a person in your past or present who brought out the bestin you. Jot down three to five words or phrases to describe this person s qualities.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens, 1859 Now think about a person in your past or present who brought out the worst in you. Jot down three to five words or phrases to describe this person s qualities. How familiar are you with Emotional Intelligence (EQ)?
Definition of Emotional Intelligence Your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage behavior and relationships. Drs. Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves We only hire smart people here! Why EQ can matter more than IQ
Emotional Intelligence Why It Can Matter More Than IQ Daniel Goleman, Bantam Books, 1995 Perhaps the biggest surprise for me has been the impact of EI in the world of business, particularly in the areas of leadership and employee development (a form of adult education). The Harvard Business Reviewhad hailed emotional intelligence as a ground-breaking, paradigm-shattering idea, one of the most influential business ideas of the decade. Daniel Goleman, Introduction, 10 th Anniversary Edition, Bantam Dell,2005 You can t teach an old dog new tricks! The Learning Case for Emotional Intelligence
Being Human Emotional Intelligence EQ Personalit y Intelligence Quotient IQ Hey, I didn t mean anything personal by it! Personal EQ: Self-Awareness & Self-Management
EQ: Personal Competence What I See What I Do With Me What/With concept TalentSmart
What is Self-Management? You convert your understanding of your own emotions into appropriate personal behavior. You know how to recover successfully from powerful emotions, by considering alternatives and then acting appropriately, once your emotional reaction subsides enough to allow a rational response. You understand, as you react and act, that your short-term needs may have to wait until longerterm goals are addressed. Hey, it s not me. They re the problem! Interpersonal EQ: Social Awareness & Relationship Management
EQ Interpersonal Competence What I See What I Do With Others What/With concept TalentSmart What is Social Awareness? You read other people literally plusyou read between the lines, recognizing clues that point to their true feelings and emotions. You are able to avoid any bias that could result from your own emotions and beliefs, recognizing the higher goal: assessing others accurately. You are especially skilled in active listening, laser-like observation, and enhanced empathy.
What is Relationship Management? You respect that Relationship Management is the most complex EQ skill, flowing from your Self-Awareness, Self-Management, and Social Awareness. You use your accurate perceptions of your emotions and other people s emotions to create successful conversations and transactions. You apply Relationship Management actions so consistently and so well that you are adept in forging long-term relationships. Get It Together: The Four EQ Domains What I See What I Do With Me With Others What/With concept TalentSmart
But we have no time for touchy-feely stuff here! The Business Case for Emotional Intelligence From the Classroom to the Boardroom: Learning Organizations Embrace EQ Coca-Cola Johnson & Johnson American Association of Equine Practitioners
Claudio Fernández-Aráoz, in his 1999 Harvard Business Review article Hiring without Firing, listedten Deadly Traps that explain why the wrong person gets hired. One of those traps was: Ignoring Emotional Intelligence. Egon Zehnder International found that unsuccessful managers, each with exceptional IQ s and experience, had emotional intelligence deficiencies. Hired on experience. Fired on personality. Self-Management Gaps are Generational! 2008 TalentSmart
Or are they? 2008 TalentSmart A New Year s EQuation for a Young Professional s Success If young professionals tend to have lower Emotional Intelligence and if people with lower Emotional Intelligence have a greater Probability of Getting Fired then It s Time to Develop Your Emotional Intelligence!
