2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement The Mercer Clinic is a not-for-profit organization operated exclusively by volunteer students enrolled in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis. The students, supervised by local volunteer veterinarians, provide free medical, surgical, and nutritional services for animals of the homeless population of the Sacramento, California area. One of the goals of the clinic is to aid in fight against pet overpopulation; thus, it is a requirement that all animals must be sterilized as a condition for ongoing treatment at the Mercer Clinic. Background Statement Mercer Clinic for the Pets of the Homeless is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization providing free medical care for the animal companions of the homeless. The clinic meets the second Saturday of every month at Loaves and Fishes, a Sacramento-based organization which provides an array of services to the homeless. Mercer Clinic is a cooperative effort between multiple groups, including veterinary volunteers (doctors and students), undergraduate vet aide students, and veterinary companies sponsoring efforts. More than 30 veterinary students, working alongside veterinarians, volunteer their time each month, working with clients, conducting physical exams and practicing preventive medicine on feline & canine patients (heartworm prevention, flea treatment and vaccines). Mercer Clinic would not run smoothly without the help from the Vet-Aide Club, an undergraduate club that offers students the opportunity to gain experience with veterinary students and professionals. The clinic gives these students the opportunity to gain crucial hands-on experience while assisting at the clinic and working as a team with veterinary students. Mercer Clinic is also an extremely valuable educational experience for the veterinary students. Not only are the students able to utilize a clinical application of their studies, but they also gain valuable time working with and learning from practicing veterinarians. Students must follow up on their cases if waiting on test results by contacting the clients, in turn teaching them valuable communication skills. These types of responsibilities will help veterinary students improve skills that will enrich their careers in the future. In addition to improving the lives of the pets of the homeless, the clinic works to reduce pet over-population. Clients are counseled on the benefits of spaying and neutering. Surgery is provided at no cost, usually at a spay/neuter clinic held the day after, should the owners elect to alter their animals. Since 1993, the clinic has altered over 1,200 animals. In 2015 Mercer Clinic received three prestigeous awards: the Outstanding Community Service Award from the UC Davis Internship and Career Center and the Community Service Resource Center, the Chancellor s Civic Engagement Award (including a $1,000 prize), and the Presidential Award for Community Service (complete with a plaque, pin and certificate signed by President Obama). 2
3 Needs Statement 1. Operational costs are typically $30,000 annually. Mercer is 100% volunteer run, so all funds go directly to serving our clients and their companions. The majority of our funds come from private donations and grants. 2. Our next big goal is to have a fully operational surgery suite so that we can treat our patients on site. This would increase the number of pets treated for more advanced issues and add additional opportunities for veterinary students to get experience. 3. Until our surgery suite is a reality, referral services at approved veterinary clinics are offered when pets need surgery, radiology, dental procedures, other advanced treatments or emergency services. There is always more need than funds available. We currently have a budget of $416/month, which really limits the pets we can offer treatment at this time. We also need volunteers to facilitate transporting pets to and from these referral appointments! If you're interested, have a car and some time/flexibility in your weekday schedule, please contact us for more information. 4. Holiday Pet Baskets and Winter Coat and Sweater programs provide over 130 Mercer pets with holiday gifts and warm attire at the December clinic. The fundraising and planning of this program is year round. 5. We are in need of an onsite storage shed to keep supplies for the clinic. CEO/Executive Director Statement Mercer Veterinary Clinic is now located in its own building located next to Loaves and Fishes thanks to generous donors and sponsors. Through extensive fundraising, we raised enough funds to purchase two portable trailers to convert into a permanent clinic. We are able to treat animals in individual exam rooms, perform surgeries in a fully-stocked surgical suite, and store prescription veterinary diets, pharmaceutical and lab equipment. Another important component of the new trailers is an isolation room which will help to control the spread of infectious agents. Our leadership team has been working tirelessly to oversee the implementation of these various components, which must meet stringent standards according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Mercer Veterinary Clinic provides invaluable opportunities for the students in high quality medicine, practice management, budgeting, client relationships and technical skills. While the clinic is run by UC Davis students, we act as our own non-profit agency independent of the university and do not receive funding from them, so it is imperative that we reach to the community for support. Your consideration will allow us to continue to provide high-quality veterinary care to the homeless pet population of Sacramento. These animals have stuck by their owners through thick and thin, and are often their only family and friend. Please help us save them. 5 Holiday Pet Baskets Description The Mercer Clinic Holiday Pet Basket program was started in 1995 by Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital staff members of the VOICE staff newsletter. It has grown due to need over the years from only 25 baskets to 130 baskets last year. As one might imagine, in order to produce 130 baskets filled with gifts, it takes many people helping and contributing to make it a success. We wish to remind everyone that every year we rely on the kindness of others to help these very special pets who are more than a pet. Instead, they are the constant companions and family members to the less fortunate. Please help keep this wonderful tradition alive by contributing any time of year to the Mercer Veterinary Clinic Holiday Pet Baskets. All of the clients and pets love this annual event. Budget $3, Category Population Served Program Successes Program Success Monitored By Animal-Related, General/Other Animal-Related, General/Other Homeless Adults Adults Last year 130 baskets were distributed to our clients. Additionally we try to outfit all pets with sweaters to keep them warm during the cold months ahead. This is a real need for animals that may be exposed to the elements regularly. Maybe most importantly is the goodwill that is generated from this event. The success of the program is tracked by the number of baskets put together and distributed each year. This demonstrates the generosity in terms of donations and time from volunteers, as well as the gratitude shown by Mercer's clients. Last year a short film was made showing the success of the event. 5
