1 9 Industrial Clothing Important Safety Information Protective Clothing in the Workplace Industrial clothing is designed to protect you against chemical hazards, heat and fire, electric shocks, cold conditions and ionising radiation. Where your personal safety is an issue and you need to be seen, it is imperative that you wear high visibility clothing. According to Australian and New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4602:1999 High-Visibilty Safety Garments, there are three classes of high-visibility garments. CLASS D CLASS N CLASS D/N A garment designed for outdoor daytime use only. Uses fluorescent or other non-retroflective high-visibility material. A garment designed for night-time use only. Uses retroreflective elements on an unspecified background. A garment designed for both day and night use. Comprises retroreflective elements on a fluorescent or other non-retroreflective high-visibility background material. If you are required to work in the early evening, it is better to purchase a Class D/N garment as this will enhance visibility during the winter months and daylight saving periods. The Standard specifies the visual requirements for high-visibility safety garments. These are worn by people in situations where they may be exposed to various hazards such as moving traffic or moving plant equipment in the charge of an on-board controller. The Standard covers garments suitable for daytime wear and nighttime wear where they will be seen by retroreflected light, or for wear under both conditions. NOTE: This Standard covers only the visual requirements of garments. It does not cover their physical integrity or fitness for use in adverse physical environments. 6 Protective Clothing 9 Heat Resistant Clothing BOC offers an aluminised range of products able to withstand temperatures of up to 400 C. The products are made from durable aluminised aramid. The aluminising reflects heat away from the wearer. The aramid fibre provides thermal protection. A wool blanket lining is available on selected products.
