4 Aim of the presentation Increase awareness and understanding of selfharm Discuss the rise and the contributing factors Think about what we can do to support children and young people who self-harm and how we can prevent more self-harm.
5 Self-harm describes a range of things people deliberately do to themselves that appear to be harmful but usually do not kill them. Selfharm is not usually a failed attempt at suicide
6 Self injury is: an act done to oneself with the intention of helping oneself rather than killing oneself. Paradoxically damage is done to the body in an attempt to preserve the integrity of mind NICE 2004

10 Statistics 1 in 5 school aged children (15 year olds) in say they self harm Nationally there has been a rise of around 70% among year olds in the last 3 years. In Worcestershire the rise is approx. 40% for the same age group, over the same period. WHO survey The Health Behaviour
11 Talking self-harm Talking self-harm report 2012 by Young Minds and CELLO Over the last ten years inpatient admissions for young people who self-harm have increased by 68%. One in twelve children and young people are said to selfharm. In the last year alone these hospital admissions for under 25s increased by 10%. Among females under 25, there has been a 77% increase in the last ten years.

25 First Aid for Self-Harm D R A B C Danger Does the young person need medical treatment? Are there any issues around safeguarding? Are there any other risks? Respond Whilst remaining calm and non-judgemental listen to the child or young person. Think about if you need to inform anyone. What can you do within your role to support the young person? Ask Is it their first time? Are there any changes to their usual self-harm? What triggered them? Does the young person want to die? Behaviour Has their behaviour changed recently? This could be at school, their concentration, appetite, sleep, social life or their mood. Coping Strategies Ask the young person; what else helps you to cope? What do you enjoy doing? Is there anyone you can talk to? Support the young person in identifying any protective factors.
