It serves a population of over 1,000,000 people, with 14,000 births, 200,000 Emergency Room visits including 36,000 Pediatric Emergency Rooms visits, 100,000 hospitalizations and 32,000 surgical procedures each year. Today, the Pediatric Division of SMC is responsible for the medical care of about 400,000 children in the Negev region. The Pediatric Departments treat conditions that range from cancer and cardiac illnesses to medical conditions indigenous to desert living and those resulting from lack of regular preventive care a prevalent problem with the region s new immigrants and underprivileged residents. Soroka s young patients are a microcosm of the uniquely diverse population of the Negev including new immigrants from Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union and Argentina, children of veteran Israeli families and an increasing number of Bedouins. The Pediatric Division treats these thousands of children of all backgrounds, spanning diverse cultures, all in a single highly professional organization whose sense of humanity knows no limits. In light of its vast experience in Pediatrics, the highly diverse nature of the population cared for, and the Division's exceptional senior staff, the Division attracts many young physicans specializing in Pediatrics. The Division also ranks high in its academic achievements, including the education of medical and nursing students as well as the publication of many academic studies in the most prestigious professional journals worldwide. Designed to ensure that each and every child will receive the finest medical care possible, the new Saban Pediatric Medical Center has recently been completed, and provides services including a large Pediatric Emergency Room, a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and three Pediatric Inpatient Departments, all in a new modern four-story facility. A fifth floor is currently under construction and will host the Pediatric Surgery Department. A new Comprehensive Pediatric Health Center is also currently being designed in order to provide all pediatric in-patient and out-patient services for the region. The Division plans to relocate its outpatient facilities to 1

3 these new quarters within Soroka, adjacent to the Saban Pediatric Medical Center. Inside the new Pediatric Outpatient Complex we plan to establish a new service: the Pediatric Dialysis Unit. The Need End stage renal (kidney) failure (ESRD) is a multi-systemic disease that without suitable treatment can lead to permanent disability and even mortality. Treatment may include dialysis or a kidney transplant. Dialysis (an artificial renal replacement therapy) is often needed as a bridge to transplantation in both adults and children. These treatments have become the standard of care for children (with almost no age limit) for more than twenty years. Thanks to the improvement of overall medical and pediatric care in recent years, more and more children need renal replacement therapy. In light of the chronic shortage of organs for transplantation, it is necessary to provide chronic care by dialysis to more children. Although the preferred method of dialytic treatment in childhood should be home-based by peritoneal dialysis (cleaning of the blood through washes of the abdominal cavity), many children can not accept this treatment, either for medical or socio economic reasons. Due to the higher prevalence of low socio-economic conditions in our region, more children need care by hemodialysis (direct cleaning of the blood). The Children's Nephrology Unit at Soroka has provided peritoneal dialysis care for more than ten years. In addition, it provides acute care by hemodialysis of hemofiltration in the children's intensive care unit. However, chronic hemodialysis services have not yet been established. Target Population to Be Served The incidence of pediatric ESRD in our area is twice as high as the average worldwide. Two common causes of pediatric ESRD - congenital anomalies of kidneys and urinary tract and genetic renal diseases - may be overrepresented in the Negev area due to the high proportion of marriages among relatives in the Bedouin population and families with a large number of children. Each year, several children who reside in the Negev and need hemodialysis must travel to distant hospitals in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. These children have to travel three times a week for this procedure. Since hemodialysis treatment for children is in many respects different from that given to adults, it cannot currently be provided by the Soroka adult hemodialysis facility. Pediatric hemodialysis units exist today in all of Israel's geographic areas except for the Negev. A donation for the building of such unit at Soroka Medical Center will have a unique and significant impact on health care for our area. Project Our plan is to build a free standing Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Unit in the new Pediatric Outpatient Complex. The planned unit will cover 320 square meters that will include patient care rooms, nurses and doctors clinics, as well as the water purification facility that is needed in any hemodialysis service. The design of the Pediatric Dialysis Unit has been completed and the foundations are already in place. Full execution and completion of the project can be accomplished within a period of one year. 2 3

4 The cost of construction, equipping and furnishing the new Pediatric Dialysis Unit will amount to a total of $600,000. Donation and Donor Recognition Full donor recognition will be provided at the Pediatric Division, on the Donors Wall of Honor at Soroka Medical Center, as well as in all invitations and publicity associated with events to take place on site. There will in addition be a dignified public dedication and naming ceremony. Soroka Medical Center Soroka Medical Center is among Israel s largest and most advanced hospitals, and the country s most active. Soroka is the only major medical center in the entire Negev, serving a population of one million inhabitants, including 400,000 children, in a region that accounts for 60% of the country s total land area. Each year, Soroka cares for more than 190,000 emergency cases, 80,000 hospitalizations fill its 1,000 beds, over 32,000 surgical procedures are performed, and more than 13,000 babies are born. Its neonatal and pediatric departments provide family-centered intensive care with worldclass survival rates. Soroka s Trauma Unit is the largest and busiest in Israel, always on call, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Soroka serves as the regional trauma center for victims of terror and for all Israel Defense Force bases in and near the Negev. More than 3,000 trauma patients are admitted to Soroka annually. Soroka s physicians travel in mobile units to care for patients in remote clinics as part of Soroka s community outreach programs. Soroka educates the Negev s diverse population in preventive care and public health. Soroka is also the largest employer in the Negev, with more than 4,000 employees, including more than 800 new immigrants on staff at all levels of responsibility.
