1 School Council 2012/13 - Autumn Term The Weee event The school councillors launch the Weee event with an assembly. The children of the school council took part in an assembly to launch this year s major recycling event. Weee is a recycling scheme to make use of broken or no longer wanted electrical items, which are small enough to fit into a carrier bag and be brought into school. The Assembly. School Council Assembly on Recycling Damien: The eco school council have decided on lots of ways to improve how eco-friendly we are at Oak Tree. Chloe: We decided that we could be better at saving energy. Matthew: With everyone s help, the garden area could be redesigned so we could make better use of it. Damien: We thought we could recycle more. We have several ideas about what we could do. All of us are already very good at recycling paper. We all put unwanted paper in the big blue box in our classrooms, but there is so much more we could recycle. Matthew: Why do we recycle? Chloe: Everything we throw in the rubbish bin ends up in land fill sites like this one. Damien: These sites are getting bigger and bigger. Matthew: Do we want our countryside to be one big rubbish tip? Chloe: At Oak Tree we thought we could do something about it.

2 Damien: First of all we are now recycling batteries. (Joe and Jay-Lee stand up) Any used batteries you have, bring them into school and put them in this box in the entrance hall. (Josh put the batteries in the box) Matthew: Secondly our school has entered a competition to recycle waste electrical and electronic equipment or WEEE for short. Lots of the schools in Stockton have entered. Chloe: The great thing about this competition is that you have the chance to win prizes for yourself, just for recycling your broken of unwanted electrical equipment, or WEEE, and give the school a chance to win a prize too! Chloe: To win, we need to fill this big green bin with our broken or unwanted electrical equipment. These are the types of items we need. (Point to power point on the screen) Matthew: Who has some things at home they think are just right to go into our big green bin? (Pause to see if any one puts up their hands) Chloe: This is what you have to do. Matthew: STEP 1 Joe: Ask at home if you have any broken or unwanted electrical equipment. Make sure you ask if you can bring it into school and that it is no longer wanted. (Luke mimes asking Amy. Amy gives Luke the toaster) Matthew: STEP 2 Jay-Lee: Put it into a bag. If it is too big to fit into a bag, it is too big to bring. (Luke and Aimee put the toaster in the bag) Matthew: SETP 3 Joshua: Bring your item into school. (Luke walks to school) Matthew: STEP 4 Joe: If it is broken it goes straight into the big green bin and will be recycled.

3 If it still works it has a sticker put on it and then it goes into the big green bin and will be reused. (Rosie puts a sticker on the toaster; Luke puts it in the bin) Matthew: STEP 5 Jay-Lee: Make sure your name is put onto the list to go into the prize draw. Your name is put on the list for every electrical item you bring. The more things you bring in the more chance you have of winning! (Rosie writes Luke s name on the list) Matthew: STEP 6 Joshua: Receive your reward. A pencil that is made of recycled plastics cups. Just think, your cup once held some ones coffee! (Rosie gives Luke the pencil and Luke smiles) Chloe: Damien: Can you make the big green bin say thank you? Bring in you WEEE items into school. Matthew: Give yourself and the school a chance to win and reduce landfill. Remember All: We will, we will recycle, recycle!

4 To help remind the children and adults in school - posters were made. Just bring them in to us Year 6 - to be recycled. 5 Recycle old batteries. Have you any no longer useable batteries? If you do we can recycle them for you. If you recycle batteries you can save a bit of the land fill site. You will not be polluting the soil anymore. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

6 REMEMEMBER TO RECYCLE YOUR UNWANTED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT!! A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARENTS WHO HAVE ALREADY BROUGHT SOMETHING IN. OUR BIN IS 3\4 FULL SO YOU HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB BUT WE COULD SQUEEZE SOME MORE IN. NOT ONLY YOU WILL WIN A FREE PENCIL BUT YOU WILL ALSO ENTER A CONTEST TO WIN AN I PAD

7 SITA trip, November Year 6 and the school councillors visited SITA, a company that burns household waste to generate electricity. They had to wear hard hats, high visibility jackets and safety goggles to tour the recycling plant. They thoroughly enjoyed the tour and seeing the waste being brought in and prepared for burning. Through the window of the incinerator the children could see bright flames and feel intense heat of the burning rubbish. At this site many other items were collected to be sent for recycling in other areas of the country. The children were amazed at how many different items could be recycled.

10 The Garden Area. The children of Oak Tree are changing the garden area to make it more inviting and easier to use. These are the ideas each year group has had. Y6 Tables for relaxing and using for lunch Y5 Green house and raised beds for growing plants. Y4 A habitat garden or area to attract insect and butterflies. Y3 Fruit trees to create a mini orchard Y2 A quiet area for story time or reading books. Earth Paint the cow. This is what the garden area looks like at the moment lots of potential don t you think?
