Notice to WIS Examination Candidates Examination time is a stressful time. Give yourself a break and read through these guidelines. Take careful note of the following information to avoid unpleasant surprises. Public Examination Routine 1. Days prior to the Exam Check your individualized exam schedule carefully and notify the exams officer of any errors Memorize your candidate number. Your candidate number consists of the last 4 digits of your student registration number printed on your student card. Pack blue or black pens, pencil, ruler, rubber.. any small stationery that you intend and are allowed to bring into the exam room in a clear see-through zip-lock bag. Learn how to delete the RAM (=random access memory) in your calculator. Your subject teacher can explain this to you if you do not already know how to do it. 2. Exam Day Arrive at the school 30 minutes before the start of the exam Pack your student card or HK ID card in the see-through zip-lock bag Lock away all your personal belongings including wallet, phone, mp3 players, coins etc. Prepare a bottle of water. The bottle must be of clear plastic, see-through and without any label or writing on it. Gather at the Foyer in Block B, 3/F (multi-purpose hall and auditorium) Visit toilet. You will not be allowed to leave the exam room during the first hour of the exam Minutes before the start Check your pockets. Do not keep anything at all in them. Check if you have your student or HKID card with you. Contact the exam staff in the event that you cannot locate it. Check your place (candidate number) on the seating plan posted outside the exam rooms. Disable the alarm on your wristwatch Minutes before the start Queue up quietly near the entrance of the exam rooms with your student card ready. When invigilators call your student number, show your ID card to them. Boys must turn their trouser pockets inside out to show they are empty. Carry only your zip-lock bag with pens, water bottle, ruler and calculator (when indicated and if allowed). Clear RAM in your calculator and show the Ram cleared message to the invigilator on duty near the door when entering the exam room. (only applicable to the exams where the use of a calculator is allowed)

YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE EXAM ROOM If you do not have your student card or HKID card with you this may mean you are unable to start the exam on time and possibly refused access altogether. If you store something in your pockets. If you left behind any belongings on the benches at the foyer. EXAM CONDITIONS APPLY FROM THE MOMENT YOU STEP INTO THE EXAM HALL 5. Inside exam room Proceed quietly to your seat. Your name tag will be on the designated table. Sit down and refrain from talking. Place your water bottle underneath the table. Place your student / HKID card near your name tag. Declare any unauthorized item you might have accidentally brought inside the room. This should not be the case if you followed the above instructions. Now is your last chance to declare illegal items and have the invigilator hold onto them until the end of the exam. 6. Start of the examination Listen to the instructions of the invigilator. Invigilators must read a scripted text imposed by the exam board. We are not allowed to omit these announcements. Write down your name, candidate number and centre number on the exam paper. You must write your official registered name as recorded on your birth certificate and other official travel documents. Our centre number, the exam start and stop time will be noted on the whiteboard/projected on the front wall. Use only black pens on answer sheets or booklets. Pencil is not allowed unless explicitly stated. Exam papers are scanned and pencil marks are often invisible on the scans. Do not use highlighters on your answers. They may be used to highlight questions within the question paper or question/answer booklet. 7. During the exam Raise your hand and wait for an invigilator to approach you if you have a question or are in need of anything. Keep an eye on the remaining time. Start and stop times are noted on the whiteboard(s). Clocks are placed at crucial spots in the exam halls. Rough work must be done on examination stationery, often in the answer booklets. There is ample space provided for this. Make sure to neatly cross out any rough work that does not require marking. Toilet breaks are only allowed during exams longer than 1 hour 15 minutes. They are restricted to: 60 min. after start till 15 min. before end of an exam. Raise your hand and wait for a signal from the invigilator. Keep your visit to

the toilet as short as possible. You will be supervised when leaving the exam hall. 8. End of the exam Re-read your paper when you think you have finished. You will not be allowed to leave the room until the scheduled time is expired. Warning is given 5 minutes before the end of the exam. Follow the instructions of the invigilator when the end of exam signal has been given. Once the stop signal has been given, you must immediately stop writing. Close your papers and put down your pens. Tie papers with the provided treasury tag in the following order: 1. word processor approval form (if applicable), 2. question/answer paper, 3. word processor paper, 4. additional answer booklet (only applicable to special arrangement candidates and if you used an additional answer booklet) Remain seated while the invigilators collect the exam papers. Leave the room quietly. You will be released in staggered manner, row by row. Students with extra time can continue working. Leave the 3/F Foyer area immediately and keep quiet as long as you are in the vicinity of the exam hall. Candidates still in examination require a quiet environment. Golden rules NOT ALLOWED inside the exam room Mobile phones, mp3/4. ipods, e-readers, wrist watches with data storage capabilities, USB s or other electronic devices. Even a broken or fully discharged phone is NOT allowed and leads to a disqualification. Dictionaries Calculators (unless explicitly stated) DO NOT attempt to cheat. DO NOT disturb others. Warning: If you breach any one of these conditions you will be reported to the Exam Board. You will most likely have your results disallowed. This will remain as a permanent record on your exam transcript. Important note Students with no locker should notify their tutor group teacher or contact the exam officer prior to the first day of exams.

Student with Extra Time and/or use of Word processor You will have received prior written confirmation if the use of a word processor or extra time has been granted to you. Important Note If you are entitled to extra time and/or the use of a word processor, and the seating plan posted outside nor your nametag in the exam hall makes mention of this, flag this immediately to an invigilator or the exams officer. Extra time is provided at the end of the normal scheduled time. All candidates start together. When normal time candidates leave, remain seated and continue working till your full time has expired. Rules imposed on word processor users: You must use one of the dedicated exam laptops. You must save your file on the attached USB stick. No spell checker or internet access is available. You must complete the front cover of the exam answer/question paper as if you were handwriting your paper. You can answer some questions in the answer/question booklet and some on your word processing document. A document carrying your name might already have been prepared for you on the laptop. Check your personal details in the header and correct/complete if needed. Ensure the file is saved on the attached USB stick. If no document has been opened, click on the word document template located on the desktop, fill in your personal data in the header, and save the file on the USB stick. Use your name and current exam paper code. If you need help to find the Word Template, raise your hand and wait for an invigilator to assist you. The template has been set to font point size 12 and double spacing as requested by the boards. Do not change this. Save your work regularly and make sure it is saved on the USB stick. Clearly indicate the number of the question before each answer in your document. Only after the exam time is finished can your paper be printed. You will not be able to proofread the printed paper. You will be given the time to: - check if the print is indeed your work; - add your name on each sheet if not already present; - add page numbers on each sheet (ex. page 2 of 3).

This notice has been produced on behalf of: AQA, CCEA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Information for candidates - controlled assessments This document tells you about some things that you must and must not do when you are completing your work. Before you submit any work for marking, you will be asked to sign an authentication statement confirming that you have read and followed these regulations. If there is anything that you do not understand, you must ask your teacher or lecturer. Controlled Assessment will provide you with an opportunity to do some independent research into a topic. The research you do may involve looking for information in published sources such as textbooks, encyclopedias, journals, TV, radio, and on the internet. Using information from published sources (including the internet) as the basis for your assignment is a good way to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of a subject, but you must take care how you use this material - you cannot copy it and claim it as your own work. The regulations state that: the work which you submit for assessment must be your own, you must not copy from someone else or allow another candidate to copy from you. If you use the same wording as a published source, you must place quotation marks around the passage and state where it came from. This is called referencing. You must make sure that you give detailed references for everything in your work which is not in your own words. A reference from a printed book or journal should show the name of the author, the year of publication and the page number, for example: (Morrison, 2000, pg.29). For material taken from the internet, your reference should show the date when the material was downloaded and must show the precise web page, not the search engine used to locate it. This can be copied from the address line. For example: ( downloaded 12 February You may be required to include a bibliography at the end of your work. Your teacher or lecturer will tell you whether a bibliography is necessary. Where required, your bibliography must list the full details of publications you have used in your research, even where these are not directly referred to, for example: Morrison, A. (2000) Mary, Queen of Scots, London: Weston Press. If you copy the words or ideas of others and don t show your sources in references and a bibliography, this will be considered as cheating. 1

Preparing your work good practice If you receive help and guidance from someone other than your teacher, you must tell your teacher who will then record the nature of the assistance given to you. If you worked as part of a group on an assignment, for example, undertaking field research, you must each write up your own account of the assignment. Even if the data you have is the same, the description of how that data was obtained and the conclusions you draw from it should be in your own words. You must meet the deadlines that your teacher gives you. Remember - your teachers are there to guide you. Although they cannot give you direct assistance, they can help you to sort out any problems before it is too late. Take care of your work and keep it safe. Don t leave it lying around where your classmates can find it. You must always keep your work secure and confidential whilst you are preparing it; do not share it with your classmates. If it is stored on the computer network, keep your password secure. Collect all copies from the printer and destroy those you don t need. Don t be tempted to use essays from on-line essay banks this is cheating. Electronic tools used by awarding bodies can detect this sort of copying. Plagiarism Plagiarism involves taking someone else s words, thoughts or ideas and trying to pass them off as your own. It is a form of cheating which is taken very seriously. Don t think you won t be caught; there are many ways to detect plagiarism. Markers can spot changes in the style of writing and use of language. Markers are highly experienced subject specialists who are very familiar with work on the topic concerned they may have read the source you are using (or even marked the essay you have copied from!). Internet search engines and specialised computer software can be used to match phrases or pieces of text with original sources and to detect changes in the grammar and style of writing or punctuation. Penalties for breaking the regulations If your work is submitted and it is discovered that you have broken the regulations, one of the following penalties will be applied: the piece of work will be awarded zero marks; you will be disqualified from that unit for the examination series in question; you will be disqualified from the whole subject for that examination series; you will be disqualified from all subjects and barred from entering again for a period of time. Your awarding body will decide which penalty is appropriate. REMEMBER IT S YOUR QUALIFICATION SO IT NEEDS TO BE YOUR OWN WORK

Notice to Candidates Know the rules before you take your examinations 1. You must be on time for all your examinations and any required periods of supervision. 2. You must bring the equipment you need to the examination e.g. pens, pencils and rulers. 3. You may use a calculator unless you are told not to do so, but you must not use the calculator function of another device. 4. You must not become involved in any unfair or dishonest practice before, during or after the examination. 5. You must not: Sit an examination in the name of another candidate. Have unauthorised material, including electronic devices and mobile phones in the examination. Have any equipment in the examination which might give you an unfair advantage. 6. Having unauthorised material in the examination is breaking the rules, even if you do not intend to use it. If you have any unauthorised material you may be penalised or disqualified. 7. You must not talk to, attempt to communicate with or disturb other candidates once you have entered the examination room. 8. You must follow the instructions of the invigilator. 9. If you are in any doubt speak to the invigilator. 10. You must leave the question paper, your answer book or answer paper, rough work and any other (used or unused) materials in the examination room.
