2 Adobe Digital Editions You can borrow a Whitby Public Library ebook and read it immediately in your browser, but in order to read the book on your ereading device, you must transfer it to your device. If the device that you are using is an ereader without a full browser, you will need to use Adobe Digital Editions. Use the following procedure to download your ebooks so that you can read them anytime, anywhere. Download Adobe Digital Editions You must install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) in order to transfer ebooks to your ereader. This program is the software that manages the copyright information for the ebooks, and allows you to transfer them from the computer to your device. 1. To begin, access the Whitby Public Library s ebook catalogue. 2. At the bottom of the page, click on Applications. 3. This will take you to a new page, click on Adobe Digital Editions. 2

3 4. You will be taken to the Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) website, where you can follow the instructions to download ADE for free. Authorize Adobe Digital Editions 1. Once you have downloaded ADE, the most important step is to authorize the program. This creates the account that manages the rights to the ebooks that you are currently borrowing. Click on Help then Authorize Computer. 2. If you do not have an Adobe ID, you will have to create one. Click on Create an Adobe ID. 3

4 3. The Adobe Website will open in a new window. Fill out all fields and check the box at the bottom to accept Adobe s Terms and Conditions. Then click Create. Note: Your Adobe ID username will be your address. 4. Return to ADE and fill in the fields with the Adobe ID you just created. Then click Authorize. Note: You will only have to authorize ADE once. However, you will need to know your Adobe ID should you ever wish to authorize an additional computer. 4

5 Get E-Books Using the E-Book Catalogue 1. Once you have finished authorizing ADE, return to your internet browser and access the Whitby Public Library s ebook catalogue through the Library s main page. 2. Log in to your account for personalized suggestions and other useful tools. When you first sign in, you are taken to your ebook Bookshelf. This page will show you how many (if any) ebooks you currently have checked out. 3. Search for a specific author or title using the search bar or browse the ebooks available by selecting a topic from the Menu Bar. 4. When browsing the e-book catalogue, watch for this helpful information. 5

6 Borrowing E-Books 1. Clicking on a book cover will allow you to see more details and to borrow or place a hold on an e-book. Click on Borrow to check out that title. Note: You are allowed a maximum of 12 books checked out at a time. Downloading E-Books 1. Once you have borrowed an ebook, you will be presented with a button that says Download. Click on Download (EPUB ebook) Once you click Download a small window will open. It asks if you would like to Open or Save the file. Choose Open and the file will automatically open in Adobe Digital Editions. 6

7 Transfering E-Books to your ereader 1. Your ebook will download automatically to Adobe Digital Editions and open in Reading View. Click on the button that says Library to exit that view. 2. When you are ready to transfer your ebook to your ereader, plug your ereader into the computer. Your device will appear in the list in the left hand menu. 3. In order to transfer files to your ereader, drag books from the library and drop them onto the name of your ereader in the left hand menu. You must unplug the reader from your computer for the transfer to complete. 7

8 Returning E-Books E-Books will automatically return at the end of their lending period, however you can return them early if you wish. To return ebooks before the lending period is over, right click on the book you wish to return and select Return Borrowed Item from the menu. (This must be done in Adobe Digital Editions) After a book is returned, it will still appear in your library as Expired. In order to remove it, you must right click on the book you wish to remove and select Remove from Library 8

9 Library Lending Policies Checking Out You can check out up to 12 titles. The lending period can vary from title to title.. Returning & Renewing Some titles can be returned before they expire. Titles cannot be renewed, but you can check them out again after they expire if they are still available. Holds Up to 8 titles can be placed on hold at one time. We'll send you an when a title becomes available. You have 3 days to check out your hold after we you notice that it is available. You can cancel a hold by following these steps: 1. Login to your account. 2. Click the Holds link. 3. Click a title's Remove link to cancel the hold. You can change the address that you entered when you placed a hold as follows: 1. Login to your account. 2. Click the Holds link. 3. Click a title's Edit link. 4. Enter the new address in the ' address' and 'Confirm address' fields. 5. Click Submit to update the address for the selected title. New Library Card Numbers If you were issued a new library card number and need to transfer your checkouts and holds to your new account, please contact support at digital@whitbylibrary.on.ca. Be sure to include your new library card number, your old library card number, and your address. 9
