Summary of Language Requirements Entry Language Requirement To apply and be admitted to the MBA Programme, there are two Entry Language requirements: A candidate must be fluent in English A candidate must have at least a practical level of knowledge in a second language The certification requirements will differ for each candidate, depending on whether English is your native tongue or not. Important note: Native language cannot be changed Your application form for the MBA Programme asks you to specify your native language. No proof is required to certify a native language. Therefore, please be aware that it will not be possible to change the native language once you have declared it in your application. This native language will automatically be listed in your final transcript. If English is your native language, you will need to provide acceptable means of certification of second language. Please refer to Annex 4 at the end of this document for a complete list of acceptable means of certification. If you are admitted onto the MBA Programme, you should send in your certification as soon as possible, with the final deadlines being: June 1st for September intakes November 1st for January intakes If English is not your native language, then the combination of your native language along with the proof of English proficiency is sufficient means to satisfy the entry language requirement. Please note that English certification must be sent with your application. Please refer to section 2 of this document for more details. Exit Language Requirement You are also required to certify an ability to speak a third, commercially useful, language at a basic level in order to graduate from the programme. The exit language requirement does not need to be certified before the start of the Programme (although we strongly recommend that you do). This can be done any time before or during the MBA Programme. Important note: Exit Language validation is a requirement to graduate If your exit language requirement has not been fulfilled by the end of the MBA Programme, your MBA diploma will not be awarded at the time of graduation. 2
INSEAD Language Policy 1 - Language Proficiency Measurement Scale INSEAD uses a four-level scale which measures language competency. This is in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for language levels (CEFR). Below is a table which indicates the proficiency needed to fulfil INSEAD language requirement. To be admitted to the MBA Programme, a candidate must be fluent level in English and have at least a practical level of knowledge of a second language. These two languages are referred to as your entry languages. A candidate must also have at least a basic level of understanding of a third language. This will be referred to as exit language. LEVEL DESCRIPTION INSEAD REQUIREMENTS Ability to communicate very fluently and precisely in complex situations. Equivalent to C1/C2 on CEFR scale. Ability to interact with a degree of fluency and communicate on a wide range of subjects including in a professional context. Equivalent to B2 on CEFR scale. Ability to understand and communicate on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure etc. Equivalent to B1 on CEFR scale. English Proficiency Minimum Required for Entry Language Ability to communicate in a simple and direct exchange of information on routine matters. Equivalent to A2 on CEFR scale. Minimum Required for Exit Language Please note the following: In your application, we request that you declare your native language and indicate any languages for which you consider yourself to have a beginner s knowledge. However it is not necessary for you to certify your declared native language or that you are at a beginner level in any language. For this reason, native language and a beginner level have not been included in INSEAD s four-level competence scale. It is important to know that your native language will automatically be listed in your final transcript and cannot be changed once you have declared it in your application. 3
2 - English Proficiency Certification To apply and be evaluated for the MBA Programme, a candidate must be fluent in English. Certification must be sent with your application. Only the following methods are considered as acceptable means of certification for English Language proficiency. To be valid, tests must be less than two years. - A UNIVERSITY DEGREE conducted exclusively in English The transcripts should clearly mention the language of instruction is English to complete an application. An exchange programme does not qualify. - TOEFL Internet-based test (Minimum required: 105) Computerised-based test (Minimum required: 260) Paper-based test (Minimum required: 620) - PTE Academic (Minimum required: 72) - TOEIC Listening & Reading (Minimum required: 950) AND Speaking ((Minimum required: 190) & Writing sections (Minimum required: 170) - CPE - Certificate of Proficiency in English (Minimum required: Grade B) - IELTS Academic (Minimum required: 7.5) 3 Entry Language Requirement In addition to fluency in English, you must have at least a practical level of knowledge in another language. This can be your native language for non-english native speakers. If your native language is English, you need to certify another language prior to the start of the MBA Programme. If you are unable to provide certification for the other language at the time of applying, you will need to supply this proof no later than the following deadlines: June 1 st for September intakes & November 1st for January intakes It is the candidate s responsibility to ensure that adequate and acceptable evidence is provided to certify competence for the entry requirement. Failure to do so may lead to the cancellation of his/her admission to the MBA Programme. Please note that most examinations recognised by INSEAD (listed in Annex 4) are only offered twice a year, so it is advisable to plan ahead. Alternatively, you may choose to be tested by our language school partner FL&C by contacting this organisation directly. (Contact details are provided page 11) If you plan to visit either campus, please take advantage of this time by making arrangements with FL&C ahead of time to take a language test in order to meet the final deadline listed above. 4
Acceptable means to certify competence for the entry requirement (other than English): Second native language Examined only on a case-by-case basis and requires evidence of actual use (i.e. schooling or higher education, not just "language spoken at home", or "mother s/father s native language", or work experience ). For Singaporeans only, a GCE A level (used for university entry) can validate a second native language (Tamil, Mandarin, and Malay). Final Secondary School Exam Exam and schooling must be conducted exclusively in the language: i.e. Baccalauréat to validate French, Immersion programme in Canada, Abitur for German, and Maturita for Italian, etc. University education a) Conducted exclusively in the language for a minimum of one year (certification required). b) A university major in the language (please note a minor is not sufficient). Certification from state-recognised cultural or commercial bodies currently known to INSEAD: Tests currently accepted are listed in Annex 3. Candidates must provide, as proof, a copy of the appropriate certificate showing the level of competence in order to satisfy the entry requirement. To be valid, all certificates (listed in Annex 3) must not be dated prior to two years of the application date. Please note that INSEAD does not accept certification from any private language institution. Only the certificates/diplomas from official bodies are recognised as acceptable means of certification for the entry and/or exit language requirement. Written and oral tests (by appointment only) Written and oral tests are available by appointment with FL&C. The written test can be taken during INSEAD test sessions (please contact FL&C to know the dates), or in the future student s country of residence. To organise a written test in the country of residence, the future student must find a «Proctor» (for example: from a reputable and recognised language school or university). The proctor must be approved by FL&C. Any charges requested by the proctor for their services remain the student s responsibility. The oral test can be organised either face to face or via Skype. Appointments for tests must be made one month in advance. Test results are sent directly to the MBA Admissions at INSEAD. The language tests available are listed in Annex 1. For further information on language test preparation and test scheduling, please contact FL&C directly (contact details page 11). According to performance According to performance 5
4 Exit Language Requirement To be eligible for graduation, students must demonstrate and if necessary, acquire before or during the Programme, at least a basic level of knowledge in a commercially useful language which is the official language of a country other than one s native or entry language. Also, please note we take into account the linguistic similarity of the exit language with the declared entry languages. For example INSEAD will not allow Hindi with Urdu, Danish with Norwegian, Bahasa Indonesia with Bahasa Malaysia, Dutch with Afrikaans, etc. In order to make the most of your INSEAD experience, both academically and socially, we strongly encourage you to put as much time and effort into improving your exit language before the start of the Programme. The exit language requirement MUST BE met by the end of the MBA Programme in order to receive the MBA Diploma. The exit requirement may be certified in one of the following ways: By using the same means available for validating the entry requirement as detailed in Annex 3 before or during the programme, or By taking a Language Evaluation Test (written & oral) with FL&C on either the Singapore campus or the Fontainebleau campus (13 language tests offered). Exit language tests before starting the MBA Programme are organised either at the FL&C Centre in Fontainebleau or in the future student s country of residence for those who prefer to use the services of a proctor. The student must find a «Proctor» themselves. The proctor must be from a recognised and reputable Language Training Centre or University accepted by FL&C. The oral would be organised via Skype. Exit language tests during the MBA Programme are organised by FL&C on three separate occasions. - During the first week of the programme (referred to as Orientation Week), - In the month of December, before the December Class graduation ceremony, - In the month of June, before the July Class graduation ceremony. The results are sent directly to the INSEAD MBA Office for validation. Note: Students going to Wharton in P5 should plan on having certified their exit language prior to the exchange in order to fulfil the language requirement in time for graduation. Please note that you cannot change your exit language once declared to MBA Admissions. 6
To validate the exit language at the A2: level required. A Language Evaluation Tests (LET) is held during the first week of the programme (Orientation Week). Please refer to Annex 1 for the list of language tests available on campus. Enrolment for this test must be declared to MBA Admissions in order to validate registration. The Language Evaluation Test is a level test (A2); it lasts 2 hours and includes: Part 1 - Grammar and structural knowledge (30%) Part 2 - Sentence completion (20%) Part 3 - Reading comprehension and vocabulary (10%) Part 4 - Interview (10%) Part 5 Essay on a given topic (30%) If you would like the opportunity to validate your chosen language at a higher level than A2 (), you will have the option of completing 2 Bonus exercises at the end of the Language Evaluation Test (part 6 and part 7) to reach a B1 (), B2 () or C1/C2 () level. Part 6 - Sentence completion Part 7 - Essay For those students scoring 50% or higher on the written test, an oral exam is required to confirm the level. A minimum of 50% is needed to pass the oral test. The oral and written scores are averaged to obtain the final grade. During the oral test you will be expected to discuss and answer questions about a chosen or guided topic for 10 to 15 minutes. The scoring of the written test is as follows: Score INSEAD Language Course INSEAD Level of Competence European Council Level < 24 Beginner 1 NA NA Beginner 2 NA NA Beginner 3 NA NA 50 NA A2 With the 2 Bonus exercises, you can reach a, or level. The written and oral language tests held determine a participant s level of competence. A basic level of knowledge is required. Complete beginners are not required to take a test. For further information, please contact FL&C directly (contact details page 11). 7
5 FL&C Language Courses Training and courses are offered in 9 languages: French, Spanish, German, Italian, Mandarin, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese and Russian. Once the FL&C exit test is taken during Orientation Week, the students are put into groups according to level. If you need or want to take classes with FL&C, please note this strict condition: Your enrolment in the Language Evaluation Test session during Orientation Week is compulsory (unless you are a complete beginner). Group courses comprise three levels: Beginner 1, 2 and 3. Courses are offered as follows: In Period 1 - Beginner 1 level In Period 2 - Beginner 2 level In Period 3 - Beginner 3 level The final test of the course, validating the exit language (A2 level), is organised at the end of Period 3. Enrolment for group courses (for complete beginners) and/or enrolment for the Language Evaluation test session during Orientation Week (for students who already have some knowledge of the language) must be done when you declare your exit language to MBA Admissions. Only group courses are proposed for exit language students (except if there is only one candidate wishing to study a particular language offered by FL&C). Priority in language tuition during the programme is given to students who need to certify the exit language requirement in order to graduate. Other students, referred to as Volunteer students, may only join group language classes under the following conditions: If there are places available in the groups If such groups exist in the chosen language If these students are in the same section and are of the same level as students in the group. Volunteer students who would like to take courses at a higher level than A2 may only do so if there are enough students to create a group in the chosen language (minimum 5 participants). These groups can only be created from Period 2 onwards and are for a maximum of 20 hours of tuition. Students may decide to undertake self-study. However, a test from Annex 3 is still required to validate at least a basic level of knowledge. Students must contact FL&C to organise the FL&C LET test. For other tests outlined in Annex 3, it is the responsibility of the participant to contact the appropriate organisations or Language schools to organise their test. 8
Languages Courses at FL&C are offered from Period 1 to Period 3 only! If the group has fewer participants, FL&C will adjust the number of hours accordingly. The tests at the end of Periods 1 and 2 are compulsory and on a pass/fail format. In the case of a fail, self-study remedial work must be arranged with the language trainer. At the end of Period 3, there is a final Language Evaluation test (oral and written) and the level awarded is entered on the participant s grading transcript. Group Courses in French, German, and Spanish are available in Fontainebleau. Portuguese, Russian and Italian are also available depending on demand within the incoming promotion. 22 Frequently Asked Questions Annex 4 What is the language of instruction at INSEAD? English is the language of instruction at INSEAD. You need to be fluent in English to apply to the MBA programme. A valid English certification must be sent with your application for it to be considered as complete. How do I prove fluency in English? You can demonstrate fluency either by a degree from a university where all courses were taught exclusively in English (if your university degree was exclusively taught in English but in a non-english speaking country, please make sure to send proof of the language of instruction at the same time as your application; or by taking one of the following English tests and reaching the minimum passing scores (in brackets): TOEFL (internet-based test: 105, computer-based test: 260, paper-based test: 620); TOEIC (all 4 sections) Listening & Reading (950), Speaking (190) & Writing (170); IELTS Academic (7.5); CPE (B); PTE Academic (72). These tests have a validity period of 2 years prior to submitting your application. When do I prove fluency in English? The Admissions Office requires a valid English certification (see paragraph above) to consider an application as complete to start the selection process. If your university degree was exclusively taught in English but in a non-english speaking country, please make sure to send proof of the language of instruction at the same time as your application. Do I require any languages other than English to start the programme? Yes, you need to prove at least a practical knowledge of a second language (referred to as entry language ) to be able to start the programme. This can be your native language for non-english native speakers. If I am an English native-speaker, when and how do I have to provide certification for my entry language? You need to provide certification no later than 1 June for the September intake and 1November for the January intake. Accepted certification is listed in the Language Policy. We recommend that you work on satisfying this entry requirement as soon as you hear about your acceptance to the programme, if not earlier. Am I required to have some knowledge of a third language? Yes, you need to prove at least a basic knowledge of a third language (referred to as exit language ) before or during the programme. We recommend that you work on satisfying this graduation requirement as soon as you hear about your acceptance due to the intensity of the programme. When and how do I certify the exit language? The exit language can be certified before, at the start of, or during the programme. We recommend that you work on satisfying this graduation requirement as soon as you hear about your acceptance due to the intensity of the programme. You will be able to certify your level for the exit language by taking a language test during the first week of the programme (referred to as Orientation Week ). Other acceptable certification is listed in Annex 4 of the Language Policy. 21
Frequently Asked Questions Annex 4 What is meant by "fluent", business, "practical" and "basic" knowledge of a language? "" knowledge is the ability to communicate very fluently and precisely in complex situations and is the minimum level required to prove English proficiency. knowledge is the ability to interact with a degree of fluency and communicate on a wide range of subjects including in a professional context. knowledge is the ability to understand and communicate on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. and is the minimum level required for the entry language. knowledge is the ability to communicate in a simple and direct exchange of information on routine matters and is the minimum required for the exit language. What do I need to do to declare my languages? Once accepted, you will be asked by the MBA Admissions Office to confirm the three languages you will use to satisfy the INSEAD graduation requirement. Do I need to send proof of proficiency for my native language? No, certification is not required for your native language. However, once you have declared your native language in your application, it will not be possible to change it. This native language will automatically be listed in your final transcript. I took one of the official language tests accepted by INSEAD prior to application. Can it certify the requirement? Yes, provided that the test is taken within two years of your application to INSEAD (even for the DELF exam). Beyond the two year validity period, you will need to either re-sit for the test or arrange to take another test with our language partner FL&C. I studied abroad in Germany for one academic year in Would this meet the entry/exit language certification for German? Yes; university studies abroad (a minimum of one year exchange where instruction is conducted exclusively in the language) or final secondary school exam (where exam and schooling must be conducted exclusively in the language) are accepted and do not have limited validity dates. Can elective courses at university certify the entry or exit language other than English? No, elective courses at university are not sufficient means of certification. However, a university degree major is an acceptable means of certification (a minor is not sufficient). Although Spanish is not my native tongue, I've lived and worked in Spain for many years. Am I still required to prove my language proficiency? Yes, you will still be required to provide us with acceptable proof/certification of your language proficiency. Can I declare a second native language? Yes, you may but please note that this is accepted only on a case-by-case review and requires evidence of actual use (i.e., high school leaving certificate or higher education). If I have no training in the language, do I need to take a test in order to demonstrate a Beginner level in the exit language? No, you can register for on campus language tuition without taking a placement test and start language courses for beginners in Period 1. 22
Frequently Asked Questions Annex 4 Can I take a language exam for the exit requirement before the MBA programme begins? Yes, you can take any of the recognised tests listed in Annex 4 of the Language Policy or take the test on campus during Orientation Week. Are there any restrictions on the choice of entry and exit languages? Yes there are certain restrictions: a) Entry and exit languages must be languages officially recognised in different countries. b) Entry and exit languages must be linguistically different from each other. Is it possible to change my exit language after having informed the Admissions Office? We recommend that you keep the exit language declared to the Admissions Office. As the information will be used in the assigning of groups to facilitate the scheduling of classes, you need to notify us as soon as possible and no later than one month before the start of the programme. I would like to take the language test during Orientation Week when I arrive. How do I register? You register when you declare your exit language to the MBA Admissions Office. This is a prerequisite to attend the exam. I would like to take the language test before Orientation Week. How do I register? FL&C offers entry and exit tests in 13 languages: Arabic (classic), Bahasa Indonesian, Bahasa Melayu, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. To arrange for a test, please contact FL&C at the following address: [email protected]. Who is the language partner school? The partner institution for language testing and language tuition is FL&C in Fontainebleau. For test scheduling, recommended books and more information on language instructors, please contact them directly: Your dedicated contact is Muriel PAILLEUX, Global Account Director at FL&C. You can contact her at the following address: [email protected]. (Full contact details for FL&C can be found on page 11.) 23
Frequently Asked Questions Annex 4 Is the exit language test during Orientation Week only a written test? The test includes oral and written components. For students obtaining 50% or higher on the written test, an oral test is required to validate the level. A minimum of 50% is needed to pass the oral test. The oral and written scores are averaged to obtain the final grade/level. Is there a different test for each level of proficiency? No, it is the same test for every level. The test is a level test and you have 2 Bonus exercises to reach a higher level. If I pass the exit language test conducted during Orientation Week, am I still required to take language tuition? No. If you score 50 and above, you reach a basic level and automatically satisfy the exit language requirement. No further language tuition is required. Are language classes available and is it included in the curriculum? Language classes are provided on-campus throughout the year by our language partner school. Language tuition fees are included in the MBA tuition fees. Can I take up additional language classes, on top of what is required? Yes, but please note that priority in language tuition is given to students who need to certify the exit language requirement in order to graduate. Other students may join language classes if there are places available in the groups. Can my partner attend a language course? Yes, partners can take individual or group classes with other partners if there are enough people interested. Priority in language courses is given to students who need to certify the exit language requirement in order to graduate. Partners cannot however participate in the classes run for the MBA students. How are the language classes scheduled? Will I miss out on any of my regular classes? No, you will not miss out on the regular MBA classes. The language classes will be scheduled around the MBA curriculum. Last revised in November Please note that this Language Policy is subject to change without prior notice. 24
