1 Welcome to the Hawkesbury District Health Service Specialist Directory The Directory is designed to inform the General Practice and Specialist Medical community within the North West region of Sydney about the health services available at Hawkesbury District Health Service (HDHS). Located in Windsor, HDHS services an estimated catchment population of approximately 90,000 people. HDHS is a licensed private hospital, with a contract to provide public patient services with NSW Health. The public/private partnership grew out of the necessity to replace the old Windsor Hospital in the early 1990 s. The ensuing NSW Government tender was won by Catholic Health Care Services, a not for profit provider, with a brief to build and operate the facility for 20 years. Effectively HDHS is as both a private hospital and public hospital at the same time. Patients who have private insurance can access our private facilities outside the confines of the public hospital regulations. Alternatively, our community members without private insurance have access to public hospital services consistent with other NSW Health facilities. In this way, for every patient that chooses to use their private insurance, a space is created for their neighbour who does not have private insurance. Maximum total service to the community is achieved by maximising private insurance usage. Hawkesbury Private Hospital Patients choosing to utilise their private health insurance will receive preferential service by their Specialist VMO of choice, in dedicate Private Ward Accommodation. They will also receive their choice of entertainment services and specialised catering menu. June 2010 Page 2

In hours coverage includes approximately 10 doctors, with 24 hour coverage provided out of hours by 2 to 3 senior, experienced medical officers. The medical officers are supported by the Head of the Emergency Department. HDHS provides training for student and graduate nurses. Each ward is managed by a senior clinical manager, in addition to a senior nurse manager overseeing clinical operations, 24 hours per day.
