2 The Growth of Mobile Stats and figures that will shock you!

3 Classroom Control Teachers are IN control. YOU control where students keep cell phones during class. YOU determine when they can use them and for what purpose. Collect all phones prior to a test redistribute at end of class or after all tests are turned in. BE CONSISTENT!

4 Cell Phone Etiquette Turn off or silence when not in use. It is not appropriate to answer phone calls in class. It is not appropriate to text during class. Make to use proper grammar and spelling digital jargon, abbreviations, all caps, or emoticons are not acceptable for professional usage. TEACHERS must MODEL these behaviors as well.

6 School Agendas Agendas/Calendars get lost or become tattered; for many students a mobile phone is a prized possession. Phones can replace agendas: setting work deadlines and reminders are an easy way for students to engage with learning!

7 Quick Research Instead of hauling out the department laptops - grouping kids together with internet phones can be an innovative way to undertake research tasks. Google it if an unexpected question or topic comes up that the teacher doesn t know the answer to, students can quickly look it up and class can resume. Students can text questions to Google (466453)

8 Quick Poll Use any one of the many polling services to have your audience send a quick response to an SMS short code. One example of a service is Polleverywhere.com

9 Free Text Wall Use the Q&A Poll from Poll Everywhere to create a text wall for free Can be used to display instant comments, feedback, answers etc. during a class or seminar

10 Take a Picture Most modern phones contain cameras. These can be used to take photos of work from the board, examples of models, posters or other things that can't be glued inside a book.

11 Video Many students who have mobile phones have the ability to record video. When demonstrating a technical sequence, get a class expert with a phone to record it. Once the video is sent to you, you can place it on your class Moodle or webpage to share with the class.

12 Voice Recording Use the voice recorder feature as a means of collecting audio evidence/feedback on work. Voice recorder could be used for other purposes too such as: interview, recording instructions, podcast style notes, keywords for revision, and more.

13 Stop Watch/Timer Very, very basic it keeps time. Speeches, presentations, science experiments, keyboarding speed, timed group activity, etc.

14 Dictionary Whether it be looking up a spelling, definition, or translations students can use their smartphones to access online dictionaries.

15 Calculator A fact : Every cell phone has a calculator! :) For calculations that happen outside the classroom, for math or physics projects or any other subject that would have calculations or equations activities, it can be an easy way to solve these equations inside and outside the classroom.

16 E-Reader or Textbook Students access full text websites and use the cell phone as an e-reader or text book. For teaching Shakespeare, there's an app for that!

17 Calendar Use the calendar for reminding students about tasks, homework assignments, and guest speakers. Jesus??

18 SMS Reminders SMS = Short Message Service Use an SMS system (texting) to send reminders to learners. Examples: To bring particular materials Don't forget the homework due Project deadlines Test reminder

19 Student Messaging Using an SMS System (e.g. Txttools or Wiggio) can allow you to receive communications from your learners via text, without giving out a personal phone number. Can help you stay in touch with learners who may have particular queries and provide a fast response.

20 QR Codes You could present information /assignments / feedback to learners by generating QR codes that can be read by their smart phones. Use in wall displays to bring added intrigue about a) what QR codes are b) what more information they can find on the topic
