1 NEWSOME JUNIOR SCHOOL ART AND DESIGN POLICY Introduction This policy outlines the purpose, nature and management of the teaching and learning of art & design in our school. The implementation of the policy is the responsibility of all the teaching staff and will be monitored by the head teacher. The policy will be reviewed every two years. The Nature of Art & Design Making Art can be considered a basic human need, as evidenced by artefacts, images and structures recorded from the earliest civilisations to the present day. It has been an essential way of making sense of the world; of understanding our place in it. The young child makes marks before developing a formal language and older children can make images that can make powerful comments on their world. Art objects and images can give visual, tactile form to feelings, experiences and beliefs that can be interpreted by others. Art work encourages pupils to explore the quality and nature of materials from both practical and aesthetic perspectives. Art serves to develop the pupil s awareness of their surroundings too. Aims Art & design offers opportunities for pupils to: Develop imagination Develop the ability to carefully observe and record, using a sketch book Record personal thoughts and feelings Manipulate materials into images and objects Develop and refine skills when using materials Develop specific techniques and create personal style Follow work from idea to completion Evaluate and give opinions of their own work and the work of others Look at the work of artists, craftsmen and designers from other cultures Look at the work of artists, craftsmen, designers and architects from other eras Begin to develop an Art-related vocabulary In order for these aims to be realised there will be a place for Demonstrations of specific techniques Opportunity for expression and experimentation Practical activities The use of good quality materials and equipment Discussion with peers and adults First hand experiences to stimulate ideas
2 National Curriculum (New in 2014) By the end of Key Stage 2, most pupils will be able to meet the expectations set out in the National Curriculum, as detailed below: Purpose of study Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Aims The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils: produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms Attainment Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Pupils should be taught: to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay] about great artists, architects and designers in history Our art and design curriculum at Newsome Junior School covers the following areas: 1. Drawing (with focus on the development of sketch books) 2. Painting 3. Printing 4. Collage 5. Constructing models/sculptures 6. Digital media 7. Response to art and design Children need help to develop certain personal and practical skills to ensure that progress is made, materials are not wasted, and that success and enjoyment is achieved. Children are given the opportunity to work both on their own and contribute to paired, group and class art and design activities.
3 Extension or extra-curricular opportunities The school has held an art exhibition in a local gallery to share the children s work with the community and celebrate their achievements in art and design. Our feeder high school, Newsome High, make their art facilities and expert teachers available to us each year. This opportunity is usually given to the Year 5 children and is a valuable part of the transition experience. Art and design homework tasks are set regularly (at least once each term) and are often craft activities linked to the topic. Each week, homework is set on Fridays to give children a full week to work on their creations, as we recognise that many children choose to spend a great deal of time on such homeworks and a higher than usual level of adult support is required. During their time at Newsome Junior School, we aim to provide the children with at least one trip with an art focus. This could be a trip to an art gallery (such as the Huddersfield Art Gallery or The Lowry in Manchester ) or the West Yorkshire Sculpture Park. These visits will give the children the opportunity to see real-life works of art to help give them an appreciation of their scale and media which are difficult to convey in the classroom setting using reproductions. Our school welcomes opportunities to work with visiting artists. In summer 2014, we worked on an environmental art Willow Project with a visiting artist who worked with groups to create dream catchers and a willow tunnel. In autumn 2014 and spring 2015, we are excited to be participating in the Get Connected through mark making sketchbook project with local artist Walter Lemonface. The school participates in various art competitions. In spring 2014, we entered many pieces on the theme of Easter in a competition organised by local churches. Our pupils were thrilled to be awarded with several prizes in this competition. In autumn 2014, we will be entering the Huddersfield Choral Society Art Competition on the theme of: What does Christmas mean to you? In September 2014, our school held a whole school Out-of-Doors and Arts Week which gave the opportunity for extended art-based projects and demonstrated the importance of art and design in our school. Newsome Junior School is currently working towards receiving the Arts Mark Gold award (previously gained in 2009). Cross-curricular links Literacy Often children are provided with a visual stimulus as a starting point for descriptive writing, for example, a setting picture may be given for the children to observe and then describe. Children are asked to respond pictorially to texts to show their understanding, such as by drawing a picture to show their understanding of The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes or by completing a simple storyboard to show their understanding of a sequence of events. Numeracy Numeracy is linked to art and design through the investigation of shape, scale, space, form and pattern. In making both 2 and 3 dimensional work, the pupils use measure and estimation when composing their work and in choosing the size, amount, type and quality of materials. Computing
4 Every pupil will have the opportunity to use Purple Mash, Paint and Dazzle programs on the PCs in the ICT suite. It is hoped that once the technicalities of this media are mastered by the pupils, they will use ICT as just another media for personal expression and experimentation. As a school we have developed our use of ipads in art lessons and looked for ways that these can be used creatively. Some of the apps which are utilised in art and design lessons are: Sketchbook Pro, Brushes and Crayola Draw It. Children are encouraged to compare using ipads to more traditional art media, such as paint, and see the advantages/disadvantages of each. Personal, Social and Health Education Art and design lessons include many opportunities for pupils to work in small and large groups, which help them to develop their personal and social skills. The way that pupils work in teams and support each other when discussing ideas or collecting resources and materials, provides opportunities for pupils to develop their personal and social skills. Through the discussion of work by such artists as Edvard Munch or, for example, Pablo Picasso s painting Guernica, pupils will understand how art can make real comments about social, environmental and health issues. Art is used to enable pupils to express their own feelings and ideas, which makes a contribution to their personal and emotional health and development. Monitoring A comprehensive programme of monitoring takes place across school throughout the year. This consists of head teacher lesson observations, SMT reviewing planning and subject link teachers working alongside teachers on lesson planning. Recording and Assessment Art is the focus for assessment during one term each year, when evidence of art is also gathered to put into Log Books. During this term, children have objectives (which reflect the Key Assessment Criteria objectives from the Focus Education Being an artist document). These are annotated at the front of their topic books. The children are actively involved in this assessment process, deciding to what extent they have achieved these objectives. In addition, children are encouraged to complete A4L (Assessment for Learning) comments regularly in art lessons to reflect upon their feelings about their achievement of learning objectives. Teachers Annual Reports to parents will comment upon general skills, technique development and imaginative responses. These will reflect the expectations stated in the Key Assessment Criteria document. Resources Many lessons on the two-year topic cycle now rely on resources already prepared and saved on TSD (Teachers Shared Documents) on the school server. These resources include PowerPoints of images and examples of artists work. Planning teams should list resources required to carry out the art and design lessons detailed on their medium term planning and check whether these are available in school; ensuring more are ordered if required. The Art and Design Subject Link Teacher folder is kept updated with examples of work produced during lessons. This will aid teachers new to the school or moving year groups who would like to see examples of what is produced in particular art lessons and give ideas for outcomes from lessons. Multicultural Aspects The study of, and involvement with, art & design of other cultures offers excellent exemplars and insights. Examples of art from other cultures will be available through illustrations, prints, fabrics, paintings and artefacts whenever possible. Examples of multicultural artwork in our new curriculum for the two-year topic cycle include: - Abstract carnival paintings by Eric Picardo,
5 - Carnival headdresses - Evaluation of the work of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo - Brightly coloured weaving in the style of the Huichol Indians of Mexico, - Chinese silk painting and Chinese dragon collage work. Equal Opportunities Art is a means of communication not bound by written or spoken language and enables pupils with S.E.N. to develop a capacity for self expression. (National Curriculum Council) We strive to ensure equal opportunities for all pupils. Discrimination on all grounds of gender, ethnicity, religion or special educational needs will never preclude any pupil from full and total access to all aspects of the teaching of art & design in our school. Display Display is an important and essential aspect of this subject. It will be used to stimulate activities as well as to celebrate the achievements of the pupil s work. Examples of the work of artists, craftspeople and designers of other cultures and eras will be used where ever possible. Attempts will be made to use displays as a teaching resource as well as attractive exhibitions of work. A mixture of 2D and 3D work will be displayed throughout the year. All displays will be changed regularly to reflect current topics studied (which change termly). Conclusion By the time our pupils have reached the end of their primary education they will have experienced many opportunities to use media of various types to produce exciting and creative work, both as individuals and as part of a group. Their skills will be developed in the use of each media. Each pupil will understand the elements of art work, colour, tone, line, pattern, texture, shape and form and will be able to comment appropriately on their own and others work. Art can be a vehicle for self-expression and developing selfesteem. Every pupil will have enjoyable and memorable experiences of this subject during their time in our school.
