Napo s Best Signs for Safety: Lesson Two Mandatory/Rescue signs (7 9 years) Teacher Guidance It is never too early to introduce children to the basic safety concepts that for adults come under the umbrella of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). Napo is a charming character who can help children think, understand and act on safety issues. To find out more about Napo, click here: There is a wide range of Napo films, so please feel free to explore them and use in your own classes. Some of the basic safety concepts in this lesson plan can link to curriculum already being taught. This resource presents a range of great ideas which you can use to help integrate these safety concepts into your lessons. This specific project can stand alone as a lesson or be part of a wider project. It links to other subjects, as shown, but its main purpose is to use the engaging Napo films to teach children about the different types of safety signs, what they mean and how they help us keep safe from harm. We have also provided a full lesson plan as an example of how these ideas might be used. The first section gives an overview of the activities, objectives and resources required for the lesson. It is followed by a more detailed example of a three-part lesson plan with an idea for extending the learning. If you need more information on basic safety and health topics raised in this project, you can find it in the corresponding helpsheet for this lesson plan in the third section.

Learning Objectives To raise awareness of a range of warning signs and know why they are important To evaluate the way signs convey their meaning To raise awareness of using signs to protect yourself Groups evaluate each other s performance and test each other s knowledge of what each sign shape means Masks can be used to make a classroom display Activity Overview See Detailed Lesson Plan * 40/45 minutes Watch the Napo film clip provided with this lesson: Best Signs Story: Introduction Blue Circle (Mandatory signs) Hearing protection Green square (Rescue Signs) Emergency escape sign 2/6 Possible activities : Discuss each scene, what is happening and why. List some reasons as to why people didn t take notice of signs. Show a choice of signs from the full set of signs included in the EU Directive (see Helpsheet). Discuss the basic rules of colours and shapes of safety signs. Draw an example of each sign. Explain the purpose/usefulness of signs and their different meanings. In teams take one shape sign Round and Square that conveys mandatory instructions. Make the signs into masks that can be fixed onto sticks and held up in front of the face. Think about how the signs may speak or act to make sure they are noticed e.g. gentle voice and body language for information, strong loud authoritative voice and body language for mandatory. Discuss typical risks we meet in everyday life and how they are linked to signs. These can be practiced and modelled by the teacher in advance of group work if necessary. Test the whole class on their knowledge of what signs say and mean and why they are important through group plenary. Extension work can research other signs, including some simple road signs, and create a sign for the school. Resources Required Napo film clip (provided) Plain paper and coloured crayons to draw signs. Shape templates for some students (provided) Blue and green card and sticks to make masks on sticks To download the provided resources, go to: napo-for-teachers/resources Links to Subjects/ Curriculum Personal, social and health education Rules for and ways of keeping safe, as well as about people who can help them stay safe To recognise how their behaviour affects other people Maths Shape recognition Science To recognise warning signs and take notice of them Citizenship/Education for civil life To recognise hazards, assess consequent risks and risk control Foreign/native language Inventing simple sentences when explaining the signals Road Safety To recognise warning signs and labels and take notice of them

* Detailed Lesson Plan Learning Outcome I will be able to explain why signs are important and what different shaped signs mean. Lesson Objectives To know why signs help us stay safe To identify which shape signs represent rescue signs or mandatory. Starter 5 minutes Show a sign and ask what it means, where you may see it and why we should obey its instruction (i.e. explain the purpose of safety signs). Questions: What signs can you remember seeing around school, at home, on the roads? Do you ever NOT take notice of a sign? Discuss typical risks we meet in everyday life and how they are linked to signs. Main Activity 40 minutes Show the Napo film clip provided with this lesson: Napo Best Signs Story Introduction Blue Circle (Mandatory signs) Hearing protection Green Square (Rescue Signs) Emergency escape sign 3/6 1. After each clip discuss the messages about signs. Introduce other signs that pupils may have seen outside of school. (See helpsheet). Pupils can consider what the voices of each sign may sound like. 2. Discuss the basic rules of colours and shape of safety signs. Draw the green square EMERGENCY RESCUE sign and the blue circle HELMETS MUST BE WORN sign. For some pupils you may need to use the templates provided. 3. Make these signs into masks by cutting them out of thick card and attaching to a stick. 4. Pupils can give their signs a voice by placing them in front of their faces and putting the warning into words. 5. Pupils can work in groups to show in a story/play (as in the Napo stories) how these signs can try to protect people from danger. 6. Share these scenes with the whole class.

Plenary and Assessment 5 minutes Test the understanding of the different shapes and colours of signs and assess using the continuum below. Teacher and students assess their learning using this tool: Gold: Silver: I can explain at least five rescue and mandatory signs; what they mean and why they are important. I can explain two types of sign; what they mean and why they are important. Bronze: I can explain one type of sign; what it means and why it is important. Extension Work A. Consider other signs such as the examples below and make a really effective sign for your school. B. Explain what Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is, also based on clips of Napo films safety goggles, safety helmet, shoes, hearing protection, gloves. A number of potential Napo clips for extension work can be found here: 4/6

HELP SHEET FOR TEACHERS Napo s Best Signs for Safety: Lesson Two Mandatory/Rescue signs Best signs story The first film in the Napo series provides a basic introduction to health and safety signs and symbols found in the workplace. It is designed to provide a useful guide for new employees and a valuable refresher for other workers. Different workplace situations are shown where safety signs are important. This film is suitable for all sectors and all levels of employees but especially for young people in training or work experience. The film is designed to inform the audience about safety signs at work, to promote the importance of respecting the signs, and to learn and identify the meaning of the signs through their form and colour. There are several sketches. Each sketch concerns a work situation where Napo is confronted by the signs that come to life to teach him their meaning and the importance of safety. The sequences show what happens if the signs are disobeyed, and the technical and organisational obstacles against the efficient working of the signs. EC Safety Signs Directive The EC Safety Signs Directive (92/58/EEC) on the provision and use of safety signs at work was introduced to encourage the standardisation of safety signs throughout the EU Member States so that safety signs, wherever they are seen, have the same meaning. The regulations require employers to provide specific safety signs whenever there is a risk that has not been avoided or controlled by other means, e.g. by engineering controls and safe systems of work. Where a safety sign would not help to reduce that risk, or where the risk is not significant, there is no need to provide a sign. They require, where necessary, the use of road traffic signs within workplaces to regulate road traffic; require employers to maintain the safety signs which are provided by them; and to explain unfamiliar signs to their employees and tell them what they need to do when they see a safety sign. The Regulations apply to all places and activities where people are employed. 5/6 Key terms of the Act Safety and health signs: information or instructions about safety and/or health at work by means of a signboard, a colour, an illuminated sign or acoustic or hand signal, or a verbal communication Verbal communication: a predetermined spoken message communicated by a human or artificial voice Hand signal: a movement or position of the arms or hands for guiding persons who are carrying out manoeuvres which constitute a hazard or danger

This lesson covers the following categories of signage: Mandatory signs Mandatory sign a sign prescribing specific behaviour (e.g. eye protection ). Intrinsic features: Round shape White pictogram on a blue background The blue part to take up at least 50 % of the area of the sign Emergency signs A sign indicating an emergency escape, emergency exit, emergency route or fire equipment. Fire exit left Eye protection Safety helmet Fire exit right Ear protection Safety boots must be worn First aids sign Fire action notices Provide essential, detailed information and should form part of a comprehensive fire exit and evacuation process. Safety gloves Safety overalls 6/6 Pedestrians must use this route General mandatory Extinguisher sign Face protection The first lesson of Napo s Best Signs for Safety introduces warning signs and prohibition signs This teaching resource has been pro duced by EU-OSHA in consultation with the Napo Consortium HSE (UK); DGUV (Germany); INAIL (Italy); INRS (France); SUVA (Switzerland); and AUVA (Austria).
