1 S4 Work Experience Health & Safety Booklet Pupil Name: Form Class: IMPORTANT! Complete this booklet prior to going on your work experience placement. It must be handed into your work experience coordinator, Mrs Doran, before your placement begins in order for your absence from school to be authorised. If you have trouble completing any section please ask for help. 2 Before arriving to your work placement Before you arrive on your first day of placement it is important that you do the following: Read the job card that has been sent to you Check of you need to wear specific types of clothing Check of you need to wear specific types of shoes Check if you need to remove jewellery such as piercings Note here if there are any special requirements for your employer: Look at the job card again, many employers require that you contact them before going out on placement. Some require a CV to be sent to them, others want to carry out an interview. This varies from employer to employer. If your require safety shoes a limited number of these are available through your work experience coordinator. Note here if there are any special requirements for your employer: Finally, your job card has the name and address of your employer. 3 When on placement For many of you this is the first experience you will have in the work place. On your first day employers should train you how to do your job in a safe way. It is their responsibility to train you. It is your responsibility to follow these instructions. This means you should follow instructions exactly and ask questions if you are unsure. Fire In school we rehearse what to do in a fire alarm regularly. One of the first things you must find out is what the workplace procedures are in care of a fire so you can exit the building safely and arrive in a pre-arranged safe place. Think, what the possible causes of fire: Actions you would take in the event of a fire: Signs There are four main types of safety sign you may see in your workplace. 4 How to conduct yourself in work. It is important that you are where you are supposed to be in an emergency. Consider what if 1. You feel sick and would have stayed off school under normal circumstances. Do you... a) Stay at home and phone your work placement later if you don t improve b) Go to work. This is too important to miss c) Stay at home and phone your workplace and school straight away 2. A family problem crops up which means you ought to stay at home. Do you... a) Phone your workplace to explain b) Tell your parents that your work experience is too important to miss c) Ask your parents to call your school and workplace 3. You are on the way and realise that you will be very late because of traffic. Your mobile phone has ran out of battery. Do you... a) Get off the bus and use a public phone to call your workplace to explain b) Get off the bus and visit a friend while the traffic clears c) Just sit on the bus and explain what happened when you get there 4. You get on the wrong bus and get lost. Do you... a) Find your way to work and explain when you get there b) Phone as soon as you realise your mistake and explain that you ll be late c) Go home. It was too late to go to work anyway 5. You arrive to find that your supervisor is off sick. Do you... a) Ask politely if there is anyone else available to look after you b) Sit and wait for someone else to see you c) Go home. There was no work to do 6. You arrive to find that the company has closed. Do you... a) Go to school b) Go to the cinema c) Go home and phone the school at break time 7. Your mum wants you to pick up your younger brother half an hour before you are supposed to finish work. 5 Hazards, Risks and Controls - Check it Out Every year far too many people are injured at work. The number of reported major injuries to employees was 30,666 in 2003/4, up 9% on the previous year. Over a third of all reported major caused by slipping and tripping. Your work experience placement will give you an ideal opportunity to see why health, hygiene and safety rules are important in every workplace. Accidents and ill health can be avoided by identifying the hazard and reducing the risk. Hazard Hazards are all around us. A hazard is something with the potential to cause harm. This can include things, substances, machinery, ways of working and the workplace itself. It can also be the way you do something, by being thoughtless, careless or forgetful. Risk Risk is the likelihood of potential harm from the hazards. The extent of the risk will depend on: the likelihood of harm occurring the potential severity of the harm the number of people who might be affected Control Control means reducing, removing, limiting, or eliminating hazards. You can do this by wearing protective clothing if needed; checking equipment is in good order; train to do the task properly; not doing a task when you know it could be unsafe. You should also think how your actions could affect others for example, how an untidy workplace could cause accidents Think about crossing the road. A busy road is a hazard. If you cross the road there is a high risk of injury from being hit by traffic, and the consequences are pretty serious. You can take control measures to reduce the risk of injury, including: using a pedestrian crossing; using the Green Cross Code; or choosing another route. What is a hazard? What is a risk? 6 The Law Many schools do not offer any work placements or placements of more than 5 days. Why do you think this is the case? (HINT it is linked to risk) There are other laws concerning work experience. Most of them are to do with keeping you safe and healthy. For example, students on placement are not allowed to do certain things. The law says that work experience placements must be risk assessed and graded as high, medium or low risk depending on the type of working environment. Assessors visit high risk placements once a year to check safety standards. However, high risk does not mean that you are in danger - only that extra precautions are necessary. What hazards are involved in each of the five work environments below? What sort of accidents could happen? What sort of long term health problems might arise? Rate the Risk What risk rating would you give each work environment shown? Tick the box you think corresponds to the level of risk - low, medium or high. 7 Accidents can happen anywhere, even at work. And every workplace has its hazards, even working on a computer has its health risks. Have a look at the jobs illustrated below. What health risks or hazards might be involved in each job? 9 Boxes could fall off the copier. The file cabinet could fall forward because the drawers were left open or someone could bump into them. Poor posture: her head should not be tilted upward. It should be straight. Awkward posture: her back should be straight, her feet flat on the floor and her arms should be supported by the armrests and parallel to the desktop. Someone could trip on the cord and parcels that are on the floor. Someone could slip on the paper on the floor. This bin can easily be tripped over. The blade on the paper cutter could cut someone. 15 Shouting can upset and distract someone. It is illegal to bully a person in the workplace. Acting without checking could cause this car to fall upon the mechanic working under it. It is dangerous to play games in a workplace with machinery and slippery surfaces. This could easily cause a very serious accident. Hazardous chemicals can burn your skin or poison you. This woman is about to fall on a spanner left lying around. This man is using a hot welding gun near dangerous chemicals.
