Musical Hula Hoops By Jessica Bertram Physical Education Lesson Plan

LESSON FOCUS The inclusion of others while learning to cooperate as a team, as well as performing multiple locomotive skills. EQUIPMENT AND RESOURCES NEEDED 8-10 hula hoops Monster s Inc. Soundtrack CD Player or IPod SAFETY ISSUES Children will be reminded to be careful while walking around the hula hoops so that they do not trip on them. Also students will be reminded to watch out for other monsters so that they do not bump into each other while performing a locomotive skill. ADAPTATIONS AND EXTENSION Students who are in wheelchairs can hold on to students who is inside the circle. Once a locomotive skill is performed students cannot repeat the skill. NAPSE STANDARDS ADDRESSED Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. 1

LESSON OBJECTIVES FROM EACH DOMAIN Psychomotor: The students will correctly demonstrate at least three different locomotive skills while maintaining personal space during the duration of the song segment. Cognitive: The student will demonstrate knowledge by distinguishing three different locomotive skills with a partner. Affective: The student will demonstrate sportsmanship by cooperating with other students and finding respectful ways to solve the problem of limited space. ASSESSMENT PLAN The teacher will walk around the room and observe. If she has not seen a student perform three skills she can ask them to switch to a different locomotive skill. Students will think, pair, and share regarding what distinguishes the three locomotive skills and the teacher will watch during the execution of the skill to make sure students have a concrete knowledge. Teacher will also observe during the cooperation part. If any disputes arise they can be used as a teachable moment of ways that we can avoid the dispute in the future. INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN WARM-UP ACTIVITY: ZOMBIE TAG. Class will meet on the three point line to hear the directions. Good morning class. For our warm up activity today we will be playing zombie tag. In a few moments I will choose three or four people to turn into zombies. They will not be able to bend their knees or their elbows. It will be their job to infect everyone else. Once you become infect it is your 2

job to infect other people as well. The game will continue until everyone is infected. During this game we are going to stay inside the baselines. If you step outside the baseline you will become a zombie as well. Before we begin, how do you know if a student is a zombie? They can t bend their elbows or knees. What happens when you get tagged? You become a zombie and try to infect the other students. What happens if you step outside of the baselines? You also become a zombie. Great listening! Students with will gather in the back right corner and become zombies. (Teacher will look for ways to divide students randomly. Whether by shirt, birthday, or shoes. ) When I say go the game will begin. When I blow my whistle the game will stop and we will meet back at the three point line for the directions of our next activity. Pause to let the directions sink in. What happens when I blow my whistle? We stop playing and go over to the three point line for further instructions. Great Pause again. Go When everyone has been tagged the game will start over with new zombies. It is the teacher s job to facilitate and make sure everyone gets a chance to be zombies who wants to be zombies. 3

TRANSITION: Whistle is blown. Students stop what they are doing and walk over to the three point line. ANTICIPATORY SET: Now that we are warmed up and have the blood moving we are going to play a game where we have to work together and cooperate with our classmates. These are important skills to have. Can anyone think of a time where you have to know how to work together with someone else or a group of people? Get a few student responses. Those examples show that there are multiple times we have to know how to work together with other people in our day to day life. LESSON FOCUS FOR INSTRUCTION: Has everyone seen the movie Monster s Inc.? Explain to students what the movie is who haven t see it. In this game we are going to be monsters hiding in closets. When the music is playing the monsters are going to wander around looking for a closet while performing a locomotive skill. When the music stops you are going to jump into the closest closet and roar. Multiple people will be in a closet so you have to work together and find ways to make sure that everyone fits inside nicely. As the game continues I am going to take away some hula hoops and it will become harder for everyone to fit inside; but, we will work together and find creative ways to make room What are some locomotive skills we can do? Some examples could be Skipping Walking Galloping Running Hopping 4

Those are all locomotive skills you can do. I want you to be ready to perform three different ones while we play this game. PLAN FOR DEMONSTRATION: I need three volunteers. Think of a locomotive skill. When you have your skill stand up. Great. We are going to pretend there is music playing. When I say go you will wander around this hula hoop performing your skill. When I say stop you will jump into the hoop. Now when we all play there will be more than one hoop. Go Wait a little bit. Stop See how they had to move over in order to let everyone fit. They did a great job without hurting any of their classmates and being respectful of their space. I want everyone to be respectful of each other s space (Respecting space has been previously taught) CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: What are some locomotive skills we can perform? What do we do when the music stops? What are some ways we can be respectful of each other s space even though we will be close together? 5

TRANSITION: When I say go, I want you to find a spot for your personal space. Then when the music begins you can start. Go. LESSON CLOSURE: What was difficult about this activity? Fitting everyone in and being crowded. What were some ways you able to work together to make sure everyone fit? It s important to be able to work together and cooperate with people in our day to day lives. Keep this activity in mind the next time you are finding it difficult to work with others.
