5 CHAPTER 1 GETTING STARTED 1 GETTING STARTED 1.1 INTRODUCTION The Ohaus Repair & Service Tool (Part Number ) is required when a main PC board, loadcell or cellboard is replaced in an OHAUS balance. It is used to re-configure the balance to its original parameters in the case of a PCB replacement. The tool can also be used to communicate with the balance using commands that are listed in the service or user manual of the respective product. The latest software service tool and support files are available on the Ohaus DMX site. Note: The version shown in the following screen captures may not be the latest version. A personal computer running the Microsoft Windows operating system, Windows NT 4.0 or later, or Windows XP or later, is required. A RS232 communications port is also needed. 1.2 INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE TOOL ON A PC Follow the steps below to install the software. Prerequisite: Microsoft.NET Framework version 4.0 or later is installed. If you are unsure or if you have a problem running the Service Tool verify the PC has these files. The likely location for these files is C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework. Step 1. Step 2. Step 3. Step 4. Download the Service Tool Software ZIP file from the Ohaus DMX service software\service tool folder. Place the Zip file in its own directory (e.g. C:\Ohaus\) on the PC, un-zip the file to this location. Run the.exe application file by double clicking it Click Next in the Welcome window. 8 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool 2 USING THE SOFTWARE Step 1. The software needs to be run as Administrator. To do this, right click the newly created Ohaus Service Tool icon on the desktop and choose Run as administrator to launch the software. 9 CHAPTER 2 USING THE SOFTWARE Step 2. Select a language from the drop down menu in the upper right corner. Step 3. Select the software from the list, and then click Next. 10 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool 3 REPAIR TOOL This chapter describes the repair tool software. For instructions on how to use the service tool software please see chapter REPAIR TOOL FOR DISCOVERY, PIONEER, MB2X MOISTURE, ADVENTURE, ADVENTURE PRO, EXPLORER, DEFENDER 7000 AND NAVIGATOR PRODUCT SELECTION Step 1. When Repair Tool has been selected, a product selection list will be displayed. Choose a product from the list and click Next. Note: Discovery is used as example here since it covers all functions. Some models do not have all the functions. Step 2. The function selection window will appear. Choose the appropriate function in the list and click Next. 11 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool RS232 COM PORT CONFIGURATION In order for the software to communicate reliably with the balance the RS232 Communications Port must be properly set up. The COM Port Configuration screen will occur after the selection of the Function (or it may be after required secondary choices are made). There are 6 items that need to be set: 1. Port Must match the PC port 2. Baud rate Must match the balance RS232 settings 3. Data bits Must match the balance RS232 settings 4. Parity Must match the balance RS232 settings 5. Stop bits Must match the balance RS232 settings 6. Flow control - Must match the balance RS232 settings Set the Service Tool RS232 COM Port settings to match the balance settings, and then click Next. 12 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool RESTORE EEPROM When Restore EEPROM is selected, follow these instructions. Step 1. When Restore EEPROM has been selected, another function list will be displayed. Click Next. If the COM Port Configuration has not been done it will appear now (see Chapter 3). Step 2. The Write Image File window will appear which contains 3 input boxes, Serial Number, IDNR and Image File. 13 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool Step 3. Wait while the image file is downloaded. CAUTION: Do not disconnect power or stop the program while data is being written to the balance. Step 4. 14 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool REPLACE LOADCELL When Replace Loadcell has been selected, follow these instructions. Step 1. Enter Serial Number, IDNR, Model Number and Temperature Reference (current temperature in degrees Celsius). Click Next. Step 2. Wait while the required data is downloaded. Enter Serial Number, IDNR and Model Number, and then click Next. Step 2. Wait while the required data is downloaded. 18 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE (DISCOVERY, PIONEER, MB2X MOISTURE, ADVENTURE, ADVENTURE PRO, EXPLORER AND NAVIGATOR) When Download Software has been selected, follow the instructions below. Notes: For Explorer a second set of choices will appear, Download Base Software and Download Terminal Software. For other products it will go directly to step 2 or COM Port Configuration. For Adventure Pro the COM configuration should be same as balance. For Defender 5000/7000 please see section Step 1. Select which software is to be updated and then click Next. If the COM Port Configuration has not been done it will appear now (see Chapter 3). Step 2. Enter the MOT file location or use Browse to find and select the file. Click Next to continue. 19 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool Step 3. Wait while the software is downloaded. CAUTION: Do not disconnect power or stop the program while software is being written to the balance. Step 4. Step 5. Once the software is loaded successfully, disconnect then re-connect power to the balance. The cycling of power will allow the new software to become active. 20 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE (DEFENDER 5000/7000) Step 1. Make sure that the power adapter is plugged into the balance. Step 2. Enter the Download Software screen, choose the mot file, click Next to download software. Step 3. 1) When entering the following screen, and the red prompt information shows, please perform the following operation: a) Unplug the adapter from the balance directly. b) Wait unit the balance power has shut down completely (~2-3 seconds). c) Re-plug the adapter into balance. d) Press the ON button on the balance. For Defender 5000, user need to keep the ON button pressed, cannot release the ON button until the software has been downloaded. (The LED will not light.) For Defender 7000, the user just needs to press the ON button for a short time. (The UNDER and OVER LED will light.) Ohaus Corporation 18 Ohaus Repair & Service Tool Manual

21 CHAPTER 4 Service Tool Step 4. When the prompt information shows as below, the software download process starts. For Defender 5000, user need to keep the ON button pressed. For Defender 7000, user can now release the ON button. Step 5. Wait for the software to download, and keep balance connected. For Defender 5000, user needs to keep the ON button pressed. Step 6. When the software enters the following screen, the software has been downloaded successfully. For Defender 5000, user can now release the ON button. 22 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool DIAGNOSTICS When Diagnostics has been selected the following screen will be shown. If the COM Port Configuration has not been done it will appear now (see Chapter 3). The Diagnostics screen is used to communicate with the balance. There are 4 functions that can be used; Send, Print, Clear and InCal Weight Control. Send - Command Strings can be sent that will instruct the balance to respond in various ways. See the next section for a list of balance commands and what they do. Print This command instructs the balance to print based on the criteria that have been set up in the Balance menu. It is the same function as pressing the Print button on the balance. The response will show up on the Command Viewer. Clear Clicking will erase the commands and responses in the Command Viewer. InCal Weight Control Clicking No Load will remove the internal calibration weight from the weighing system. Clicking Total Load will place the internal calibration weight on the load-cell receptor. NOTE: Some models do not have the InCal Weight Control option. Send 1. Enter Command String (see the balance service manual for a list of Balance Commands) 2. Click Send, the command is sent to the balance. 3. The response from balance is displayed in the Command Viewer. Click Print, the print command is sent to the balance. The response from balance is displayed in the Command Viewer. Click Clear, the contents of the Command Viewer is erased. InCal Weight Control 1. Click No Load, the internal weight is raised from the load-cell receptor. 2. Click Partial Load 1, first part of the internal weight is lowered onto the receptor. 3. Click Partial Load 2, second part of the internal weight is lowered onto the receptor. 4. Click Total Load, the total internal weight is lowered onto the load-cell receptor. NOTES: Some models do not have InCal Weight Control option. Some models do not have the options Partial Load 1 and Partial Load 2. 23 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool 3.2 REPAIR TOOL FOR MB35/ PRODUCT SELECTION Step 1. When Repair Tool has been selected, a product selection list will be displayed. Choose MB35/45 MOISTURE from the list and click Next. Step 2. The function selection window will appear. Choose the appropriate function in the list and click Next. 25 CHAPTER 2 USING THE SOFTWARE REPLACE MAIN BOARD When Replace Main Board has been selected, follow these instructions. Step 1. Select model, enter serial number and TDNR. Then click Next. Note: The serial number and TDNR number is printed on the back of the analyzer. Step 2. Wait while the required data is downloaded. CAUTION: Do not disconnect power or stop the program while data is being written to the balance. Step 3. 26 CHAPTER 3 Repair Tool DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE When Download Software has been selected, follow the instructions below. Step 1. If the scale has an application code, select Download software. Otherwise select Download Software(Special), Click Next to proceed. If the COM Port Configuration has not been done it will appear now (see Chapter 3.2.2). Step 2. Choose a product from the list and click Next. Note: The procedure will be the same for Scout Pro, Scout CN and Valor In this manual we use Scout Pro as example. Step 2. 31 3.3.3 CHANGE PCB OR LC When Change PCB or LC has been selected, follow these instructions. CHAPTER 4 Service Tool Step 1. Choose either Scale or Loadcell and input Serial/Loadcell number and Model number. Then click Next. Step 2. Wait while the required data is downloaded. Click Clear, the contents of the Command Viewer is erased. Click Finish to return to the Product Selection display or click Exit to leave the program. 34 CHAPTER 4 Service Tool 4 SERVICE TOOL This chapter describes the service tool software. Step 1. When Service Tool has been selected, a Registry window will be displayed. Please follow the steps below to register your product. i) Choose a folder to be used for the application file and then click generate. ii) Send the application file to Ohaus to get the license file. iii) Select the license file obtained from Ohaus and click Register. iv) Click Next to proceed. 37 CHAPTER 4 Service Tool Step 7. Enter the Device information and click Next. Note: For PA/EX/AV/DV there will appear an additional item, Data Collect Mode. The data can be collected automatically or manually as can be seen from the screen shot below: Step 8. Choose the weight set to be used or Add a new weight set. Then click Next. 38 CHAPTER 4 Service Tool Step 9. First Qualification is Calibration. The Calibration is divided into 4 steps: Standard Calibration, Eccentricity, Linearity and Repeatability. Make sure to have the necessary weights ready for the calibration then press Start. Note: Some models do not have the Standard Calibration. Note: For PA, AV, DV and EX, the tool will read the value automatically and no input is required by the user. Step 14. When all fields have been filled in, Eccentricity test has been finished will be displayed. Click on the tab Linearity to proceed to next Calibration step. USB devices are categorized into classes such as disk drives, digital cameras, printers, etc. Balances do not have a commonly used class so the Ohaus USB interface uses a generic interface based on the RS232 serial standard. Data sent from the balance to a computer is in USB format. The USB data is directed to a virtual port. This port then appears as an RS232 port to the application program. When sending a command from a computer to the balance, the application program sends a command to the virtual port as if it were an RS232 port. The computer then directs the command from the virtual port to the computers USB connector where the balance is connected. The port receives the USB signal and reacts to the command. The USB Interface includes a CD with the software drivers to create the required virtual port on the computer. The balance s USB port terminates with a 4-pin, female, USB Type B connector. A USB Cable (type B/male to type A/male) is required (not supplied). Ensure that the balance is powered on and working properly. Power on the computer and verify that its USB port is enabled and working properly. Plug the cable s USB connectors into the computer s USB port and the balance s USB port. Windows should detect a USB device and the New Hardware Wizard will be initialized. 49 5.3 VIRTUAL PORT SOFTWARE INSTALLATION CHAPTER 5 BALANCE INTERFACES Step 1 Insert the supplied CD into the computer s CD drive. Different versions of Windows have slightly different steps to load the driver that is on the CD. In all versions the New Hardware Wizard guides you through the required steps to select the driver that is located on the CD. Example of Windows XP Hardware Wizard Step 2. After clicking Finish, the virtual port should be ready for use. Windows typically adds the virtual port in sequence after the highest number COM port. For example, on PC s equipped with up to 4 COM ports, the virtual port will be COM5. Step 3. When using the USB interface with programs that limit the number of COM port designations (e.g. Ohaus MassTracker allows only COM1, 2, 3, & 4), it may be necessary to assign one of these port numbers to the new virtual port. This can be done in the Port Settings of the Device Manager utility, found in the Windows Control Panel. 5.4 BALANCE SETUP FOR USB INTERFACE The Ohaus Interface is preset to communicate using the following settings: 2400 baud, 7 bit, no parity, no handshake. To use different settings, it will be necessary to change either the balance settings, or the computer settings. Configure the balance to the desired USB and printing parameters.
