WORK TERM OBJECTIVES DUE WITHIN FIRST MONTH OF WORK TERM
WHAT ARE WORK TERM OBJECTIVES? These are goals expected of the student during their work term; set by student and supervisor Discuss with the employer your duties and responsibilities at start of work term Mandatory document required by the Co-op Office
IMPORTANCE OF WORK TERM OBJECTIVES Help focus the learning in the WT towards specific outcomes Plan early - both student and supervisor will derive maximum benefits from the work term Monitor your progress in reaching goals Demonstrates achievements and helps update your resume Evaluate and improve performance with each successive term Develop objective setting skills to use throughout your career
SUBMITTING WORK TERM OBJECTIVES Complete Work Term Objectives Form it gives Supervisor and Student an opportunity to set formal (goals) objectives Return a copy to Co-op Office by DUE DATE (3 to 4 wks into WT) Objectives must be signed by supervisor

Work Term Objectives Form
Work Term Objectives Form
TYPICAL OBJECTIVES I hope to develop skills in project planning I would like to learn to use software to model a ship I want to increase my knowledge of design and coding practices I want to have a successful work term How do you know you have achieved them?
A WORK TERM OBJECTIVE SHOULD INCLUDE A statement of the task that you will be able to perform at the end of the learning process The standard which will be used to measure the success of your performance (e.g., supervisor feedback, drawing completion with few errors) The conditions under which the task will be performed
WT OBJECTIVES SHOULD BE SMART Specific Statement Measurable Standard Attainable Condition / Standard Realistic Condition Time Condition Greater chance of being met versus a general goal Be able to measure progress Can you carry out the required steps at work? You must be willing and able to work towards a particular goal Set a time frame to create urgency and develop motivation Who, what, when, where, why, how? How much? How many? How will you know when goal is accomplished Choose a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps Believe that it can be met; not overreaching
PREPARATION / PLANNING OF WT OBJECTIVES Performance Objectives must relate directly to the job duties Solicit input from your supervisor Should be skill-based or task-based Should be expressed in action form I will complete, I will use, I will learn, I will understand Be agreed upon by the student and the employer / supervisor Be reviewed and updated, during the work term
PREPARATION / PLANNING OF WT OBJECTIVES For Personal Objectives, identify your strengths and weaknesses (areas of focus or development) Consider Personal Skills Checklist in Appendix E of Co-op Handbook Determine your areas for improvement Determine if/how your work term may improve performance in any of these areas See End of Term Evaluation Form for assessed skills Again, solicit input from your supervisor review during term
WRITING WORK TERM OBJECTIVES What specific outcomes do I need to achieve to reach my goal? How will these outcomes be measured? Are these outcomes achievable within the job context and 4 month work term time frame? How will I achieve my objective? When will I accomplish it? Preliminary objectives do not have to be perfect (i.e., they are not carved in stone) Modifications are acceptable as the need arises
TYPICAL EXAMPLES (REFRESHER) I hope to develop skills in project planning I would like to learn to use software to model a ship I want to increase my knowledge of design and coding practices. I want to have a successful work term
I HOPE TO DEVELOP SKILLS IN PROJECT PLANNING Working with the design staff, I will learn and be able to use Microsoft Project to develop a project schedule for the construction of a new concrete bridge structure on Route 210 (Burin Peninsula). The schedule should not exceed 250 days. I will present the schedule to the design team for feedback in 4 weeks.
I WOULD LIKE TO LEARN TO USE SOFTWARE TO MODEL A SHIP During the work term, I will learn to use Rhino 3D modeling software. I will consult with co-workers and use my academic skills and any related software documents to achieve this. I will validate my instructions using company protocol and standards.
I WANT TO INCREASE MY KNOWLEDGE OF DESIGN AND CODING PRACTICES Under the guidance of my supervisor and her team, I will increase my knowledge of design and coding practices by developing a computer application, using Visual Basic and MS Excel, to calculate loading on electrical conductors. The application design will adhere to design principles and efficient coding practices learned in class. I will demonstrate a working protype to the team within 8 weeks, to receive feedback.
I WANT TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL WORK TERM My personal objective is to achieve an Outstanding grade. I will achieve this by: Leaving a positive impression of my abilities with my employer Being pro-active by asking for more work when a project is finished Take OWNERSHIP of my work term Showing interest and enthusiasm for the work by asking questions based on own research
ANY QUESTIONS? THANK YOU!
