36 Identifying a Trusted Adult Explain that everyone needs to have a trusted adult whom they can talk to. This is especially important when you have to talk about something that relates to personal safety. Ask participants to each name a specific trusted adult in their life that they could talk to. Facilitator Tip: Be sure all participants name at least one appropriate trusted adult. If a participant names someone you do not know, ask questions about that individual. Why does the participant think they would be a trusted adult? Encourage all participants to tell their trusted adult if something bad happens to them.

45 Session Objectives: Session 5 Communication and Meeting Others To teach behaviors involved with meeting others. To understand communication skills. To understand non-verbal social cues. Activity Materials Needed Duration Participant and support network contact information (emergency phone numbers) Dry erase board or easel, markers Paper, pens, pencils 1. Check-in 5-15 mins 2. 46 6. Non-Verbal Social Cues (10 minutes) Explain that unlike the activity which focused on verbal communication, there are times when people send messages without saying or writing something down. They express themselves with their bodies, non-verbally. These non-verbal cues can help people choose who to talk to or approach, and those to do not to talk to or approach. Continue to explain, that when trying to meet friends or potential dates it is important to understand these cues. State non-verbal social cues can sometimes be hard to understand. Open the power point file, on the F&D website, named Non verbal social cues on your computer. Project the images where everyone can see them. If you are unable to use the power point file, please find copies of the slides in the packet of pictures. Explain these slides contain many pictures of non verbal social cues. Ask participants to describe what is occurring in the picture and what kind of a message is being sent. Facilitator Tip: Spend as much time as necessary discussing the non-verbal social cue images. Direct the participants to identify the emotions and feelings of the people and relate them to the messages being sent. Proceed with presentation and praise participation and answers. Ask participants if they have any questions about non-verbal social cues. 7. Non-Verbal Social Cues Role Play (15 minutes) Have the group participate in a role play associated with non-verbal social cues. Some of the examples are very obvious, others are more subtle. Review the following scenarios and talk about what they mean. Facilitator: after reading the scenarios, read them again while having participants act them out. A girl or boy your age drops a bag filled with groceries. You run over and help pick-up the groceries. S/he smiles. [What could the smile mean?] A girl or boy your age smiles and says that s/he likes your eyes, and then winks. [What could the wink mean?] A girl or boy your age turns his/her head when you walk up to them. [What could 44 Friendships & Dating Manual
