Introduction Welcome! My name is Dennis Walsh, Socorro High School head varsity soccer coach, and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to have your son participate in our boys soccer program. Within this handbook, we would like to clarify and communicate what we expect from your son within the program expectations, rules, and regulations. Furthermore, we would like to provide as much information prior to the start of the season. - Coach Walsh Team Contact I can be contacted at the following: Work: at dwalsh@nrao.edu Cell phone or text: Team Standards Scholastic Attendance In order to be eligible to participate in practice or games, all student- athletes are required to be in attendance at school the entire school day. Student- athletes need to make contact with the Coaching Staff if they fail to meet this standard. The Athletic Director will handle exceptions to this rule. Eligibility & Grades Academic work comes first, soccer comes second. Players must adhere to the Socorro High School academic standards in order to remain eligible for soccer. A coach has the option to hold a player out of competition throughout the season if the coach believes it is in the best interest of the student- athlete. If make- up time is needed for academics, which runs into practice time, talk to your coach ahead of time so arrangements can be worked out. Athletes must budget their time well to meet the demands of academics and athletics...plan ahead! If you are having difficulty with any subject, please let your coach know ASAP! All of your coaches have been math/science/pe/physics teachers at some point in their lives, and they can probably give you a hand But you have to ASK first! Communication is the key Practice Attendance Practice is necessary for success; therefore, all players are required to be at practice and must attend practices prior to participating in games unless involved in a school- sponsored event. You are expected to be at practice Page 3 of 3
every day and are only allowed five (5) missed practices throughout the season. Consistency is without a doubt, the most important aspect of becoming a better player and a better teammate. If you are unable to attend you must notify one of the coaches directly at least 24 hours prior to the absence. Any absence will result in a loss of playing time. This action is designed not as a punishment for the absent player, but as an incentive for players in attendance. Players leaving early must tell their coach as soon as possible, and not the day of, unless for extraneous circumstances. Parties are not acceptable reasons to be excused. Practice Readiness All players' equipment needs to be completely prepared prior to practice. Before practice starts, make sure that you have shin guards, soccer cleats, etc Practice Attire The players are required to be prepared in practice gear prior to the start of practice. Included are the following: shin guards, cleats, running shoes, T- shirts, and shorts. Prohibited from practice are the following: baseball caps, jewelry, drug/alcohol related clothing, sunglasses and boxer shorts. Travel Policy All students are required to ride the bus to the game, no exceptions. Students who wish to return with parents must complete the necessary form (attached in this handbook) at least three days before the game. When traveling on the bus, players should use this time to mentally prepare for the game. Inappropriate behavior on the bus is an indication that the player is not ready play in the game and will result in a loss of playing time. Game Day Attire Players are required to wear their issued Warrior Soccer travel shirt and nice pants (no holes, tears, etc.) to school and on the bus for every game day. Keep in mind, you ALWAYS represent SHS and your team. Classroom Conduct Each detention received in school will result in 20 minutes of bench time at the start of the game. The second detention will result in a half suspension, and all additional detentions will result in a game suspension. In addition, it is the player s responsibility to notify the coach immediately of the detention. Failure to do so will result in a game suspension. All OSS/ISS will result in a minimum of a one game suspension. All suspended players will be required to attend games (if allowed by administration) and support the team in an alternate capacity. Game Conduct During all games, SHS soccer players will: Respect all calls made by the officials; Be positive toward teammates; be positive toward coaching decisions and constructive criticisms; Refrain from jeering opponents and fans. No foul language! Page 4 of 4
Failure to do so will result in an immediate removal from the game or practice. The coaching staff, to determine if any further disciplinary measures are warranted, will review all yellow and red cards. Housekeeping If the coaching staff discovers players' equipment left on the field after a training session, the items will be collected for their safe return. However, do not rely on this practice when safekeeping equipment. Curfew Although the coaching staff has no control over the sleeping habits of the player, it is highly recommended that the player be in bed by 10:30 PM each night prior to a game or practice. Parents are asked to help with this policy. Alcohol/Tobacco/Drugs Being a successful athlete requires a healthy lifestyle. While there are many decisions that must become part of a healthy lifestyle including diet and rest, probably the most important is to avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs. The use of these items is absolutely prohibited and anyone using alcohol, tobacco, or any other drugs is not interested in athletics and will be dismissed from the team. If players aren t strong enough to resist, or smart enough to stay away from such situations, they will never be the athletes we want. Players found in violation may be subject to further disciplinary measures by the coaching staff. Parents are urged to help with this policy. Bench Enthusiasm Every player, manager, or ball person in the bench area should be completely focused on the match. Players are expected to give positive encouragement to their teammates. A failure to do so conveys the message the player is not prepared to enter the game. These are your brothers Give them the respect that you expect from them! Sportsmanship Student- athletes are expected to treat their opponents, the officials, the fans, and your team with respect. Even if an official does not see an unsportsmanlike act committed by a player in our program, the coaching staff will immediately remove the offending player from the game. In addition, when our team completes a great play or goal, celebrate in an appropriate fashion. Do this as a team and for each other, not as a means to show up the opposing team. Uniforms & Gear Players are assigned uniforms at the beginning of the season. It is the player s responsibility to take care of it during the season and return everything in good condition when the season ends. Anything lost or damaged must be paid for. Players will not receive their awards at the banquet if their uniforms are not turned in. Players are not supposed to wear their uniform at times other than for competition. Do not wear any soccer apparel to your physical education class. Player s Daily Equipment & Inclement Weather Page 5 of 5
All players must bring indoor running shoes and practice attire everyday in case of poor weather. Even on game days we will conduct a training session if the game is canceled. Varsity/JV The determination of who is placed on Varsity or Junior Varsity is very simple. Based on practice participation, the top fifteen (15) players will be the varsity team and the remainder will be junior varsity. Varsity spots are not set in stone and spots are up for grabs on a weekly basis. Conditioning The coaching staff values and realizes the importance of physical fitness and conditioning for the well being and safety of the players. The game of soccer demands that a player have a high level of fitness. In particular, requiring tremendous endurance on the part of the player to perform and succeed at the high school level. Therefore, players who meet team fitness standards enhance their chances of playing at a higher level or in a match. Health Athletes expend a great deal of energy and must realize that eating and sleeping habits will greatly affect performance on the field. Players are asked not to have any "junk food" prior to games. Eat fruit or a sandwich at this time if you are hungry. Get plenty of sleep throughout the season, as this will greatly enhance an athlete's performance. Remember, lack of sleep will usually negatively affect you two days later. Recommendations 1. To reduce the risk of injury, proper shoes should be used and replaced every season. 2. Proper stretching, warm- up and cool- down are very important habits before and after games and practice. 3. Players who are ill should notify the coaches prior to the start of practice. 4. Athletes should drink 8-12 glasses of water each day. Bring a water bottle to school, all practices and to all games. 5. Nutrition is critical to progressing as an athlete. Do not skip meals as food is your body s fuel. The food you eat has a lot to do with how well you train and race, and no less important, how healthy you are. 6. Eat things that can be grown or killed. Don t eat things that do not have expiration dates. 7. Avoid fried foods 8. Eat smaller meals and snack often to keep from being hungry. Playing Time Parents and players should understand that your coach is experienced to handle situations and will attempt to play everybody at some point. Playing time is a coaching decision based upon many aspects of the player. Each player must realize that decisions are based upon what is best for the team at any given moment. Some players will receive a great deal of playing time while others will receive less. This result is based upon the merits of the player. All players who are concerned about their playing time are encouraged to seek out their coach and privately discuss the matter with him. Playing time should be refrained from being discussed before, during, or after the game. It should be done privately and with the coach. Page 6 of 6
Social Media While social media is a large, positive part of our culture, it can also have a disruptive impact on young people. Participating in SHS Soccer is a privilege, not a right. And that right will be revoked if social media is mishandled. Consequences determined by the coaches/athletic department will result with the misuse of social media. The following things are prohibited and will result in disciplinary actions: 1. Sexually, explicit, profane, lewd, indecent, or defamatory language. 2. Derogatory language regarding school personnel or other students. 3. Nude, sexually- orientated, indecent images or altered pictures will not be acceptable and is a violation of team policies. The Coach and Parent Relationship As high school coaches, we were hired as professionals by the Socorro School District. We are considered trained in our field, but we are also human; we will make mistakes. Please respect that we are professional coaches, but also are asked to be community and family members. We are here to assist your son during a very important time of his life. We want the best for your child even though at times we have to make difficult decisions with which you might have a tough time reasoning. It is often difficult, if not impossible, to look upon your child s experiences objectively and without personal emotion. This coaching staff is by far one of the best that I have been a part of, and without a doubt, one of the best staffs in the area. Fundraising Thank you to the summer parents and volunteers who help with our letter- writing campaign over the summer. That campaign paid for our summer camp and our balls. The only fundraiser we will need to have this season is a personal letter- writing campaign. Every player is required to turn in the name and address of at least three potential sponsors (i.e. friends, relatives, etc.). We will then prepare a fundraising letter for you to send requesting sponsorship. We are asking each player to raise or donate at least $100 each to fund the season. Prizes will be awarded to players who raise the most funds Schedule (Tentative) Socorro Warriors Boys Varsity Soccer Schedule 2013 Page 7 of 7
