Whiteboards are a great way to get children writing without the worry of making a mistake and can be used as part of your daily reading routine at home. These resources really are an investment in your child s future! It is clear that those children who are supported at home, excel at school. 3 Reading with your child continued... What is Phonics? Ask your child to re-read the story. This can be the same day, or the next day. Re-reading a story helps your child to understand it better. This in turn helps him or her to read the words in the story with more fluency and expression. Your child may be reading in a flat, monotone voice while working out the words. Once the words have been mastered, ask your child to think about how the character is feeling and to try to show expression when reading what that character is saying. Show your child how you would read particular lines. Reading together In addition to your child reading the books sent home from school, do read a variety of other Synthetic phonics is the teaching of reading in which sounds and the letter or letters that represent them are pronounced individually and blended together (synthesised ). At St John s we have adopted the Read, Write Inc. phonics programme. This is a systematic approach to teaching phonics and relies on repetition and a set routine in teaching sounds. As part of your child s weekly homework we expect that they read for at least 10 minutes everyday with a parent or carer. This should be recorded in their reading record and returned to school every day along with their school reading book. In order for your child to really benefit from the phonics programme implemented here at St John s school, it is important that you adhere to the following structure when reading with your child at home. 1. Practise Speed sounds in and out of order 2. Read Red words books to expand his or her vocabulary and discuss meaning of words regularly. Joining your local library is a great way for your child to experience a broad range of authors and genres and really become passionate about reading. 3. Read the story 4. Question your child about the story 5. Re-read the story (not necessarily on the same day) Please read this handbook to help support your child in learning to read. If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate in arranging a meeting with your child s teacher....a thing on a string! 10 3
4 Speed Sounds Reading with your child Speed sounds are the letters and the sounds that words are made up of. They are taught using Flashcards and should be revised daily before reading. Use the Flashcards or Sound Mats to teach your child the Speed sounds. These are the letter sounds, not the letter names, so m as in mat not em, and s as in sun not es. Each speed sound has a picture prompt that represents the sound. When teaching your child the Speed sounds it s very important that you don t add an intrusive uh to the end of consonant sounds. Try to pronounce them as pure sounds: m not muh, f not fuh, l not luh, etc. This makes it far easier for your child to put sounds together. For example, it is easier to put the sounds c-a-t together than cuh-a-tuh. A slight uh cannot be helped when saying the sounds b, d, g, j, w and y. When reading with your child don't be tempted to read the story to your child first. If you do, he or she is likely to remember it, and therefore get no real practise in learning to read. Point to each word, sound-by-sound, for your child and move your finger to the next word when it has been read correctly. If your child gets stuck on a word encourage sounding out the word and blending the sounds together. If he or she is not able to do this, sound out the word yourself and then ask your child to put the sounds together to make the word. If this does not work, then you say the word. Do be patient with your child. Like learning any new skill it takes practise. Flashcards 4 Sound Mat Constantly praise your child s efforts during reading and once the story has been read, ask questions about the story to check your child s understanding....air, that s not fair! 9
5 Tricky Words These are words that cannot be sounded out and have to be learnt by sight; they can also be called red words. Your child should practise reading these tricky words daily. The expectation is that by the end of reception your child should be able to read both Set 1 and Set 2 tricky words and be able to write Set 1. By the end of year 1, your child should be able to read and write all the tricky words below. Set 1 tricky words: the to I no go into Set 2 tricky words: he she we be me was you they all are my her Set 3 tricky words: said have like so do some come were there little one when what oh their people Mr Mrs looked called asked could Speed Sound Phrases Speed sounds should be practised daily, in and out of order and at a rapid pace. Each speed sound has a phrase attached to it to aid the child s learning. For set 1 these phrases help prompt how the letter is formed, for example, to write the letter m, we go down Maisie, over mountain, mountain. Speed sounds set 1: These sounds should all be stretched slightly. m mmmmountain: Maisie, mountain, mountain s sssssnake: Slither down the snake n-nnnnnet: Down Nobby, over his net f-ffffflower: Down the stem, and draw the leaves l-llllleg: Down the long leg r-rrrobot: Down his back, then curl over his arm v-vvvvulture: Down a wing, up a wing z-zzzzzig zzzzag: Zig zag zig th-thhhank you: The princess in the tower is rescued by the horse. Encourage your child to practise writing these sounds in the air using their finger to really reinforce orientation. Focus on tricky letters such as, b, d, g and h which children often reverse. sh-shhhh: shhhh say the horse to the hissing snake ng- thinnnngg on a strinnngg nk I think I stink These next sounds cannot be stretched. Make the sound as short as possible avoiding uh at the end of the sound: 8 5
6 t t-t-t tower: Down the tower, across the tower p p-p-p-pirate: Down the plait and over the pirate s face Speed Sound rhymes Each of these speed sounds has a rhyme attached to it to help aid learning. k-k-k-kangaroo: Down the kangaroo s body, tail and leg c-c-c-c-caterpillar: Curl around the caterpillar h-h-h-h-horse: Down the head to the hooves and over his back ch ch-ch-ch-choo!: The horse sneezes when the caterpillar s hairs get up his nose x-x-x-x-exercise: Down the arm and leg and repeat the other side qu-qu-qu-qu-queen: Round her head, up past her earing and down her hair You will find it harder to avoid saying uh at the end of these sounds. d d-d-d-dinosaur : Round his bottom, up his tall neck, down to his feet g g-g-g-girl: Round her face, down her hair and give her a curl b-b-b-b-boot: Down the laces to the heel, round the toe j-j-j-jack-in-a-box: Down his body curl and dot y-y-y-y-yak: Down a horn, up a horn and under his head w-w-w-w-worm: Down, up, down, up a-a-a-a-apple: Round the apple, down the leaf Down a horn, up a horn and under his head... e-e-e-e-egg: Lift off the top and scoop out the egg i i-i-i-insect: Down the body, dot for the head o-o-o-o-orange: All around the orange u-u-u-u-umbrella: Down and under, up to the top and draw the puddle 6 Speed sounds set 2: ay may I play? ee what can you see? igh fly high ow blow the snow oo poo at the zoo oo look at a book or shut the door ar start the car air that s not fair ir whirl and twirl ou shout it out oy toy for a boy...ay, may I play?
