It is necessary to pre-register and pre-pay registration fees (when applicable) for all workshop, trainings, and events. Please call to register with Sooke Family Resource Society Reception, unless otherwise noted for specific workshops. Workshops, trainings, or events with less than 5 people registered one week prior will be cancelled. As child care is not available during workshops/trainings; please make other child care arrangements for your children during this time. This workshop will prepare participants to: Understand and value the importance of professionalism Identify the characteristics of a professional child care provider Incorporate best practice into a child care business plan. Oct 15, 2016 (9:00am-3:00pm Communication 101-Enhancing the Caregiver s Communication Skills There are two sides to every communication exchange: the person sending the message and the person (or people) receiving it. It is up to both parties to engage actively in the communication process. Often messages are sent without anyone opening their mouth. Our body language and the tone of our voice speak volumes. A relaxed manner and calm voice allow the listener to hear the message without feeling intimidated. This full day workshop will allow us time in the first half of the day to explore the building blocks of healthy communication that include: sending/receiving messages, using I messages, assertive communication, active and reflective listening skills, giving feedback and summarizing. The afternoon will be spent practicing what we have learned in a supportive and fun environment! A light lunch will be provided! Sooke

Oct 26, 2016 Network/Appreciation Gathering Too Hot For Tots Did you know that in Canada fire and burn related injuries are the 3 rd leading cause of injury related hospital admissions for children aged 0-4 years of age? In this workshop we will be watching the Too Hot For Tots video and then discussing the primary and secondary steps of prevention to childhood burns. Nov 30, 2016 The Journey Of the Métis Red River Cart Come and enjoy a heart-warming look into a children s book and cultural resource that explores The Journey of the Métis Red River Cart used in part as a camping trip adventure. Participants will explore the Metis Cultural perspective using play-based activities that help with children s motor, social and team playing skills. Facilitators will show participants how this resource can be implemented in your home, daycare or during children s playtime. Island Métis Family & Community Services Society Program 345 Wale Rd. 4 Sat. Jan 7, 2017 (9:00am-4:30pm) Family Child Care Course (2017) 20 hours Sat. Feb 25, 2017 (9:00am-4:30pm) Sat. March 25, 2017 (9:00am-3:30pm) Level 1, 2, and 3 from: Canadian Child Care Federation Registered License Not Required care providers are required to attend the full 20 hour course. This is a comprehensive 20 hour course covering all of the essentials of caring for children. Topics include the Business of Family Child Care; Exploring Child Development; Planning for Health, Safety and Nutrition; Planning Children s Experiences in an enriched Environment; Guiding Children s Behaviour, Developing a Contract, Policies and Procedures; as well as Caring for Self and Developing Caring Partnerships A light lunch will be provided! (Jan 7, Feb 25, and March 25, 2017) Please call Sharon McIntosh to register if you are planning on taking the entire 3 day course for RLNR or Licensing requirements: Sat. Jan 7, 2017 (9:00am-noon) Creating Safer Play Environments Learn how to recognize children s vulnerability and the need for maintaining safe environments for young children. Dynamic and creative ways to understand how children can be helped to develop safety awareness will also be discussed. We will also be taking a fun child s eye view of their world. (Please wear comfortable clothing!)

Jan 7, 2017 (12:30-4:30pm) Children s Health and Nutrition Creating opportunities to help children develop an awareness and interest in health, nutrition and the importance of regular daily physical activity will be offered. An overview of the connection between good nutrition and children s growth and development will be discussed. A fun look at planning meals and snacks that meet children s nutritional, cultural, and personal, preferences and needs will also be included. Sat. Feb 25, 2017 (9:00am-noon) Child Development Learn about the importance of recognizing and supporting each individual child s pace of development and the appropriate steps to take when concern arises about a child s development. An overview of typical milestones as well as approaches that support children s healthy social and emotional development and feelings of acceptance and belonging will also be discussed.

Feb 25, 2017 (12:30-4:30pm) Guiding Children s Behaviour A good understanding of child development, using positive guidance techniques and recognizing various family s needs and goals help to build the foundation of a trusting relationship with the children and families with which you work. This workshop will prepare participants to: Explore some common beliefs about the discipline of children; identify the care giver s role in guiding children s behaviour, as well as outline prevention and intervention strategies for responding to children s behaviour. Sat. March 25, 2016 (9:00am-noon) Helping Children Grow and Develop by Nurturing a Healthy Sense of Self-Esteem Many things influence the way we feel about ourselves. Children have even more influences, especially children who spend many of their waking hours away from their homes and families. For children, self-esteem will be influenced by how capable they feel, and how much they feel accepted and loved by the important people in their lives-parents, caregivers, teachers and peers. You are one of the important influences on the children in your Daycare setting, so it is especially important for you to provide a safe, caring and nurturing environment in which the children s self-esteem will flourish. March 25, 2017 (12:30-3:30pm) Starting a Business and Marketing Your Child Care Setting in the Community Creating good business practices such as written child care agreements and maintaining appropriate administrative and financial records will be reviewed. May 24, 2017 Self-Care for Child Care Providers Self-care is so important and necessary in our world today! By developing a greater awareness and understanding of your own needs and approaches that support your own well-being; this can improve your emotional and spiritual well-being. By understanding the importance of, and techniques for, personal goal-setting and creating effective time-management strategies, we can create opportunities to take better care of ourselves! Network/Appreciation Gathering Age Appropriate Toys, Crafts and Activities Please join us for this fun evening where you can meet your fellow neighbourhood care providers and learn about developmental milestones. We will also discuss what you can provide as toys, activities, and crafts to meet your client s developmental needs.
