3 Workshop Descriptions and Presenters: Early Session (3:00 p.m. 3:45 p.m.) Supporting Your Child s Reading & Writing Development in the Early Years Presenter: Shareen Young, Instructional Leader, Early Years, TDSB In this session, families will learn about a variety of ways to support their child s reading and writing development at home. From writing grocery lists to reading books together, families will learn about ways to make reading and writing a fun and meaningful experience! Settlement and Education Partnership in Toronto Presenters: Dilani Kronemberg, Bharti Lokry and Sarwar Mustafa, SEPT Workers, North York Community House A power point presentation on the settlement program, summer activities for newcomer students and discussion on issues related to newcomers. Understanding, Monitoring, and Managing the (Over) Use of Technology Among Children and Youth Presenters: Sabena Fredric Social Worker, Behaviour Regional Services TDSB, Paul Szego School Psychologist TDSB and Laura Shepherd, Social Worker, TDSB People especially young people are using and relying on technology more and more in their daily lives, for social connections, for a feeling of gratification and for avoidance of other work. Come learn and share ideas to help manage how, when and for how long your child accesses technology. Understanding the Newly Revised Health and Physical Education Curriculum Presenters Nicki Keenliside, Instructional Leader, Health and Physical Education, TDSB and Shannon Bartley, Health and Physical Education Specialist,Grade 7/8 Teacher TDSB In this session, parents will spend time exploring the Health and Physical Education curriculum. Participants will learn about the three parts to the grade 1 8 curriculum, gain experience from participating in a lesson study and will spend time exploring Ministry of Education resources. Pathways and Roadblocks Presenter Marilyn Orzsulik, Technology Specialist and Grade 7/8 Teacher, TDSB We all want the best for our children in education and life. University, college, apprenticeships, workplace, travelling and more secondary school are all options once your child has his/her high school diploma. Our pathway is not always theirs. This session will focus on how to work together and help them look at options and get on the pathway most suited to their interests and passions. Citizenship Presenters: Dayana Gaviria and Martha Alvarez, Client Engagement Workers, Learning Enrichment Foundation This session will discuss the changes to the Canadian Citizenship Act, eligibility and practice test preparation. Effective Parent Engagement Presenter: Michelle Munroe, Central Coordinator, Parent and Community Engagement, TDSB

4 Evening Sessions (7:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m.) Raising Resilient Children Presenter Suzanne Gumbs Fleming, Elementary Itinerant Counsellor, and Laura Shepherd, Social Worker, TDSB This session will focus on raising resilient children and provide parents with ideas on how to help their children cope with, react to and solve everyday challenges as they arise. Healthy Snacks for your Child Presenter: Antonia Nalli, SNA, Staff advisor of the North Kipling Kids Cooking Club and Coordinator of NKJMS Breakfast and Snack Programs, TDSB In this session, parents will discuss healthy snack and lunch options for their children as well as prepare some easy snacks to take with them. A Parent s Guide to Learning in the Early Years Presenter: Fiona Bennett, Study Work Study Teacher, TDSB This session will provide parents with a clear understanding of how literacy and numeracy skills are taught in the Early Years classroom. This will include a look at learning through play and learning through inquiry. Additionally, we will discuss how parents and caregivers can support early years learners at home in ways that are fun and engaging. Reinforcing Dining Etiquette Presenter: Joanna Parris The focus of this workshop will be on formal dining etiquette for all. Through My Daughter s Eyes: Sex, Relationships and Peer Pressure Presenter: Christabell Selva, Parenting and Violence Prevention Counsellor, Rexdale Women s Centre This session will discuss creating a mother daughter bond in order to comfortably have the talk. We will also discuss ways to understand their daughter s perception of the topics and instilling good values. How to Relate to Teens, Understand Their Issues and Manage Them Successfully Together Presenter: Norma Nicholson, Published Author, Speaker, Educator, Youth Expert, Registered Nurse and Member of Peel Police Services Board This session will help to understand the root causes of challenging behaviours in children and youth and provide the tools necessary to make a difference. Abuse: The Plight of GIrls and Women Presenter: Upanesai Thedchanamoorthy, Social Services Worker, Toronto Public Health This session will address issues of abuse and support for girls and women. Understanding Special Education Presenter: Kathleen Zed, Special Education Consultant, TDSB This workshop is meant as an introduction to Special Education in TDSB. It is meant to improve parent understanding of what Special Education means and what is available to them in terms of support and resources. Parents should leave with an understanding of the processes as well as what their role is to help with their child s achievement.

5 Doing Well In School and In Life Presenters: Madalene Osei and Sheila Singh, Public Health Nurses, Toronto Public Health This session will focus on building and enhancing communication with children and supporting children to do well in school. Beyond At Risk Presenter: Tiffany Ford, School Trustee WR2, TDSB Tiffany Ford will share her experiences in running Beyond At Risk, an organization that aims to remove the negative prejudices associated with neighbourhoods that are labelled at risk. We will discuss ways to promote youth leadership in such neighbourhoods. Social Media for Parents Presenter: Laurie McCann, Training Constable, Toronto Police College This presentation will focus on social media, current apps, Internet safety and how to teach your kids to be safe online. Parents will also be given some tools to assist with monitoring and keeping their kids safe. Let s Talk Technology: Using ipads and iphones Presenter: Kathy Santa Ana, Speech Language Pathologist, TDSB This introductory workshop is intended for parents interested in using technology tools such as ipads and iphones to support their young child s language development. There will be some tips to help parents explore and examine a few suggested apps to work on their child s understanding and expression of oral language as well as early reading and writing skills. Redefining Parent Involvement Presenter: Brandon Hay, MES, Founder of Black Daddies Club During this one hour workshop we will be speaking about the importance of father/male involvement in their children s life and their education. We will be speaking about the stereotypes around Black fathers and single Black mothers. We will strategize around what supports mothers, caregivers and grandparents need to fully support the children that they are taking care of. We will be using open space technology which is a facilitation tool that is based on the premise that everyone in the space are knowledge givers and the agenda of the session will come from the participants in the room, to ensure what we are speaking about is relevant to the room. (This session is not for TDSB employees)
