FUNDING & TURNOVER Cardiff Council funding of 80,000 for 2014/15 is awarded on the basis that it is a one-off transitional award and payment is solely to smooth over the loss of revenue grant from the Council in 2014/15, due to the council moving towards a commissioning model from 1 April It is offered on the strict understanding that Sherman Cymru will not receive core funding in the future but may apply to the Council for an award under the arts commissioning process beyond 2014/15, subject to confirmation of budget. Council funding specifically supports: 1. The Education & Outreach programme in the broadest sense, including the Youth Theatre. 2. Sherman Cymru to identify new methods of operation within the Education & Outreach programme to ensure its continuity and sustainability beyond 2014/ /15 One-off transitional funding 80,000 Council funding of 80,000 represents 3.76% of company turnover of 2,125,657 for 2012/13 (accounts not yet available for 2013/14) Other funding: - Arts Council of Wales Revenue 1,145,600 for 2014/15 with a specific remit for new writing and writer development. Receipt of 212k of funding from The BIG Lottery over 2 years to enhance Creative Learning Activity. Plus other smaller grants that increase Sherman s ability to realise Creative Learning potential. GENERAL INFORMATION Sherman Cymru is one of Cardiff s leading cultural organisations and reopened in February 2012 following a 6m redevelopment project to refurbish and enhance its facilities, in particular to improve accessibility both Front of House and Back-stage. The Sherman Theatre has two auditoria, a 452 seat main stage and a flexible studio space that seats up to 150. The company produces and presents an eclectic performing arts programme, including theatre in both Welsh and English and tours within Wales and further afield. Their programme provides a platform for high quality mid-scale leading dance and theatre companies from the UK and internationally, of a size and accessibility not possible for bigger arts organisations in Cardiff. 2 Outreach programme of activity generated by their Creative Learning Department which includes but is not limited to:- Continuation and development of Sherman Youth Theatre activity o Sherman Sherbets: Aged 4-9 o Group 1: Aged o Group 2: Aged o Group 3: Aged o Sherman Players: o INC. Youth Theatre: Aged 18+ (intergenerational) A theatre group for young people with and without learning disabilities/difficulties The first stages of development towards a new community play production to be performed at the Sherman in Easter Working Title: Love, Cardiff Further information on the above is reported under the specific protected characteristics. The ethos of Sherman Cymru s Education and Outreach Programme is to widen access and participation to the arts, being FULLY INCLUSIVE and removing ANY barriers to attendance. 3 POTENTIAL IMPACT on the supported activity, i.e., Sherman Cymru s Education & Outreach Department This will enable the company to deliver year one of the new Youth Theatre structure, the first phase of the Community Play, Love, Cardiff which, without this support, these activities would have to be dropped from the Sherman Cymru programme of work for the year. By making this transitional award Cardiff Council is showing further support to Sherman Cyrmu which enables us to leverage continued financial support from other funding sources, specifically, currently, BIG Lottery and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. 3 Assess Impact on the Protected Characteristics 3.1 Age Will this Policy/Strategy/Project/Procedure/Service/Function have a differential impact [positive/negative/] on younger/older people? Sherman Cymru runs a significant outreach and participation programme which is supported by the Council s transitional one-off funding of 80,000 for 2014/15 and includes, but is not limited to, the following activity: YOUTH THEATRE Sherman Sherbets: Aged 4-9 years A Saturday morning workshop in Welsh and in English for very young children. Workshops 150 Attendances 2117 End of Term / Showbacks to immediate families 9 Number of performances Attendances 270 Sherman Youth Theatre - Group 1: Aged years This group focuses on personal and performance skills development. Workshops are taken by tutors trained in theatre, and include team building exercises, voice and movement work, and some work on text. 4 This group has a yearly skills showcase, to which friends and family are invited. This takes place in the rehearsal room. The Group also have the opportunity to take part in the Group 3 production, playing ensemble/small parts, gaining invaluable experience and developing their stagecraft. They also gain, through this experience, a respect for the art of theatre making and the skills that go into making the show happen; invaluable for working on their own project in Group 3 and also for developing empathy and discipline. Workshops 30 Attendances 420 End of Term / Year Productions number of performances Tbc due to Attendances changes in group structure Sherman Youth Theatre - Group 2: Aged years Building on the skills gained during their time in Group 1, this group continue to work on voice, movement and team building and also start to learn basic stage combat. This group works more closely on text, in smaller groups and with more individual focus. They have a yearly performance opportunity in the studio theatre, performing selected scenes from established texts. Sherman Youth Theatre Group 1 attends as part of their learning experience. At this stage, members of Group 2 are able to choose to attend workshops on the technical aspects of theatre, given by Sherman Cymru s in house production team. Workshops 30 Attendances 600 End of Term / Year Productions number of performances 1 Attendances 100 Sherman Youth Theatre - Group 3: Aged years This group continue to develop stagecraft and performance skills, building on and developing the specialised skills learned in preceding years. The group also work for the full year on a single text, including research and thematic exploration, culminating in a full production on the main stage. This production will be directed by a member of Sherman Cymru s artistic team, and will have set and costume design by an RWCMD graduate. Youth Theatre members who do not wish to perform will shadow other roles such as directing, design, stage management and technical work. The performances will be open to the public. 5 Sherman Players: Aged 18+ years (intergenerational) A performance group open to people of all ages, with all levels of experience. On a weekly basis, the group work with various tutors, some of whom have special skills such as clowning, combat, mask work etc. Once a year, they have the opportunity to present a full production directed by a professional director. The performance will be open to the public. This group is for a variety of people, e.g. they can be those for whom drama is a hobby, older people, out of work actors, any local citizen with a passion for theatre. The Sherman Players will be fun as well as skills focused, with a warm and inviting ecology. The players are encouraged to attend Sherman Theatre s produced work at a discounted ticket price. Youth Theatre: A Theatre group for young people with and without learning disabilities/difficulties This project relies upon external funding which if ceased, would mean Sherman Cymru would be unable to sustain this group financially. Workshops 60 Attendances 750 End of Term / Year Productions number of performances 4 Note this group is not pushed to perform but may undertake a showback for parents/carers/friends Attendances 400 YOUTH THEATRE PRODUCTION SUMMARY Overall number of workshops 330 Workshop Attendances 4937 End of Term / Year Productions number of performances 22 Attendances 1570 COMMUNITY PLAY 2016 LOVE, CARDIFF (working title) Sherman Cymru will develop and devise a Cardiff Community Play Love, Cardiff, a large scale, Cardiff centred outreach project, culminating in performances at the Sherman Theatre in March/April This will be a new piece of theatre, with a specially created text, based on Cardiff people, performed on the Sherman Cymru main stage with full technical and artistic support. The project will be in two phases. 6 and connection with the local community. CARDIFF COUNCIL The second phase of the project includes taking the newly created text into rehearsal and the community participants/performers working towards a full production. The production will be directed by someone with experience of this kind of work, selected by Sherman Cymru s Artistic Director. The draft time-plan is: July August 2014 Call out to the public to help create the play October December 2014 Open Taster sessions: 5 x Sessions - 2 in October, 2 in November, 1 early December Attendances: c30 per session Target: 150 February 2015 First draft of script. Shape story and theatrical elements, rough dialogue March 2015 Read-through/sharing weekend. Target - Approx 50 people June nd draft - to inform design. Full script Read through/sharing weekend. Rehearsal draft deadline 30 June Target - Approx 50 people September 2015 Weekend of sharing Target - Approx 60 people September December 2015 Intensive rehearsals January 2016 onwards March 2016 Performances Target - Approx 70 people x 30 rehearsal sessions target The Project will aim to reach and involve participants from all areas of Cardiff City both in initial research and development workshops, then in rehearsals and performances. The performances will be at Sherman Cymru during March 2016 and will aim to target 1200 audiences over 4 performances.
