2 Introducing Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity The aim of the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity (FNHC) is to provide comprehensive care and support through in-patient and at-home services to local families affected by life-limiting illness. Hospice care is all about the person being more than a patient and finding ways to improve their quality of life through symptom control, pain relief, emotional and spiritual support. Families and close friends are also involved as they are often central to the wellbeing of those in our care. This year the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has pledged to provide over 600,000 towards the costs of the Hospice and its services, which cover Aylesbury Vale, surrounding Chiltern Hills, Bedfordshire and parts of Oxfordshire. Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has been working tirelessly over the last 25 years to ensure Aylesbury has a Hospice which can provide vital care when it is needed most. We aim to continue our work and your school can play an important part. 2

3 Introducing Something Sunny for Money on Friday 5th June Thank you for agreeing to support the work of Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. Schools already play a very important role and in the last five years, have raised over 50,000 for the Hospice! Your event should have two aims: To raise awareness of the Hospice To raise funds for the Hospice Charity We hope that as many primary and secondary schools as possible can support our Sunny for Money day by participating. This is an annual event which we hope you will be able to continue to support in the years to come. This year we are inviting schools to wear a sunny hat or shorts day. Suggested 1 donation. All proceeds go towards the Hospice. Materials to support your school on this day or any other fundraising activities which you may organise are available by contacting a member of the fundraising team on or fundraising@fnhospice.org.uk. These materials include: Lesson ideas Support materials for assembly Fundraising materials including posters, flyers, collection buckets An order form for wrist bands and balloons (pink, green and white) A request form for a visit by a Charity staff member or an ambassador We hope that you will able to support your local Hospice. If you or another member of the school community would like to speak further about this event, then please contact either myself or one of the team. Many thanks Carole Snell Telephone carolesnell@fnhospice.org.uk 3

4 Nursery, Early Years settings and Primary Schools We want fundraising to be FUN and for children of all ages to be proud of their achievements. Cake and other sales offer the opportunity for children to set up shop, label, price items and handle money. Sponsored events set an achievable challenge, whilst mufti days or maybe a school superhero day are great fun. Raising funds for Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity doesn t have to interfere with your day to day activities but can be fun for children and teachers, as well as complementing the lesson plans you already have in place. We can provide you with fundraising ideas, materials and support. Year 2 pupils are always keen to share their knowledge of Florence Nightingale with us and we can supply fact sheets and a PowerPoint presentation about the lady with the lamp. We are happy to come to your school and speak in assemblies about the work that we do. If you do fundraise for us we can come to your school for a cheque presentation and also to say a big thank you to the pupils. We know that supporting a charity from an early age can provide children with a huge sense of pride and help them to really feel a part of the community. Secondary Schools and Colleges We already work in partnership with many local schools and colleges and the results have been amazing. We are happy to provide fundraising ideas, work experience placements, PR support and coverage as well as genuine opportunities for pupils to learn from our professional team. Charity fundraising on a UCAS or CV could make a University or job application really stand out. We also have a new Young Ambassadors group to get involved in. Working with the Fundraising Team is a fantastic way to get involved with a local charity, learn new skills and help to make a difference to someone s life Isobel, former pupil of Aylesbury High School Press Releases Should you wish to spread the news about your fundraising, please speak to us about releasing a press release. 4

5 Where will the money YOU help to raise go? Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity completely funds: Florrie s Children s Team - which costs 100,000 a year to keep running; giving care and support in the home to children and their families battling life-limiting illness Lymphoedema Clinic - improving patients physical discomfort and mobility from swelling of the limbs often associated with cancer Day Hospice - complementary therapies, treatment and relaxation technique help bring patients together. A patient appointment costs us 134 to fund Bank Nurses - which costs 80,000 a year to keep running Part funding - the Specialist Community Palliative Care Nursing Team Nightingale 24/7 Team - providing end of life day and night-time care and support in the home for patients at a critical time of need Bereavement Support - trained volunteer bereavement listeners offer support to families and carers following the death of a loved one All the other small enhancements which make Hospice care so special However much you raise or 25 will make a huge difference to the work of Florrie s Children s Team and the Florence Nightingale Hospice. However much you raise or 25 will make a huge difference to the work of Florrie s Children s Team and the Florence Nightingale Hospice. 5
