4 Kentucky Strengthening Families is a key strategy to prevent child abuse and neglect. All families experience times of stress, and research demonstrates children grow and learn best in families who have the supports and skills to deal with those times. By supporting families and building their skills to cope with stress, we can reduce the likelihood abuse will occur in families. Kentucky Strengthening Families is using a nationally recognized strategy Strengthening Families: A Protective Factors Framework which is coordinated nationally by the Center for the Study of Social Policy. Protective factors are conditions in families and communities, which, when present, help increase the health and well-being of families and children and reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect. The protective factors identified for Kentucky are: Parental Resilience Families Bounce Back Social Connections Families Have Friends They Can Count On Knowledge of Child Development Families Learn How Their Children Grow and Develop Concrete Support in Times of Need Families Get Their Meet Basic Needs Met Social and Emotional Competence of Children Families Teach Children How to Have Healthy Relationships Nurturing and Attachment Families Ensure Their Children Feel Loved and Safe Look for the Kentucky Strengthening Families logo throughout this document for ideas associated with a specific protective factor. More information on Kentucky Strengthening Families training is available at. Please visit bit.ly/kystrengtheningfamilies for more information and resources. Kentucky Strengthening Families is funded by the Governor s Office for Early Childhood (GOEC) through the Race to the Top - Early Learning Challenge Grant and the Kentucky Department for Public Health through the Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems Grant Program. 4

5 Take Action! Child Abuse Prevention Month is an opportunity to educate those we come into contact with each day - of what child abuse and neglect is and how to prevent it in our community! Take action! 1) Build Community Partnerships: Working alongside community members, teachers, business leaders, agencies, faith-based groups, families, students and other adults makes a lasting impact towards promoting safe, stable, and nurturing environments for children, youth and families. Meet together. Plan together. Join resources to implement effective prevention strategies! Use this packet, and PCAK staff as a resource. 2) Understand the Issue of Child Abuse and Neglect: There are four major types of child maltreatment: neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional abuse. For details and definitions, as well as state and localized data, visit: Boyd Co event involves various community members! 3) Decide on Activities to Implement: The variety of activities to be implemented is extensive. Be creative! Ideas include: Proclamation ceremonies, community kick-off events, school events and assemblies, Family Fun Days/ resource fairs, community baby showers, Pinwheels for Prevention gardens and planting ceremonies, community walks, trainings, art and t-shirt contests, luncheons to honor those working to protect children, etc. Statewide activities include a Commit To Prevent Campaign and Photo Challenge to extend throughout the month, the April 8th Commit To Prevent Wear Blue Day and the National Blue Sunday on April 24th. 4) Develop a Strategy: Ask yourself: Who are you trying to reach? What resources do you have to implement your event? What steps will you need to take to get there? Don t forget to tell PCAK about your activity so we can promote it via our social media, as well as the online Statewide Events Calendar! ( pcaky@pcaky.org) 5) Strengthen Families: Integrate protective factors, listed on page four, into media messaging, outreach and social media. Pediatric and Adolescent Associates, Inc. displays pinwheels. 6) Involve the Media (Traditional and Social Media): What media formats are available? Get the word out via press releases, letters to the editor, public service announcements, radio and television interviews, websites, podcasts, blogs, social networking sites (Facebook and Twitter), as well as photo and video-sharing sites (Instagram, Youtube, Vimeo). PCAK will distribute a packet of information to all members of the Kentucky Press Association. Taylor County Economic Development Office plants pinwheels. 6 Commit To Prevent Pledge Commit to Prevent is an approach used in effort to engage all citizens in Kentucky in child abuse prevention efforts. Here are simple pledges you may Commit To Prevent child abuse in your community - what else might you add? Share my experiences handling stress with families facing similar challenges. Babysit free of charge so parents can take a break. Arrange a parent support group so mom/dad can share the joys and challenges of parenting while children have the opportunity to play together. As a grandparent, take care of a grandchild each week to relieve some pressure on my son/daughter. As a preschool teacher, establish informational meetings for parents of young children to provide them with information on parenting. Offer a neighbor a ride to an activity. Learn the names of all the children, and their parents, living on my street. Volunteer time to a child or youth-serving organization. Run an errand, bake cookies or prepare a meal for a new parent in the neighborhood. Model nurturing care to parents of young children. As an employee, ask my boss/human resources department about participating in the Commit to Prevent Photo Challenge; planting pinwheels and having a Commit To Prevent yard sign outside the office building; having a dress down day to raise money for child abuse and neglect prevention programs; selling paper pinwheels for prevention; or participating in the April 8th Commit to Prevent : Wear Blue Day. Talk to parents about typical child development. Wear blue on April 8th for Commit To Prevent Wear : Blue Day and post a photo on social media using #CommitToPrevent and send to pcaky@pcaky.org. Register for the 3rd annual Commit to Prevent Run/Walk on April 10th via the link found at. Organize the planting of a pinwheel garden in my community. Talk to members of my worship community about involvement in child abuse prevention. Ask my place of worship or child s athletic organization what steps they are taking to ensure our children are safe from child predators. Advocate by writing or calling elected officials in effort to seek greater support for child abuse and neglect prevention statewide, and to let them know children are a priority. Distribute parenting information in my community. Let PCAK know of my interest in the PCAK Legislative Network. Learn more about Kentucky Strengthening Families and protective factors, and share the information with friends, family and social groups. 6

8 General Media Tips Engaging the local media via television, radio and/or print allows for opportunity to get the word out, to publicize events to a large audience, to reach potential supporters, to build connections and to tell your story in detail. A resource packet you can provide to the local media will be available on our website:, or by contacting pcaky@pcaky.org. Stay on message. Narrow your message to one or two central points. You do not have to explicitly answer every question a reporter poses. Answer every question in such a way it reflects your key message. Do not repeat something a reporter says that is not part of your point. Emphasize child abuse is a problem with solutions that don t receive the attention they should. Describe the solutions. Letters to the editor are a great way to reach a general audience. Keep them short and focused and be sure to include a call to action whether it is to support specific legislation or to learn more about a program. You may also highlight actions individuals, agencies and groups take to help families. Share what works. Reporters will want statistics. Instead of supplying them with the traditional child abuse statistics on reports, substantiations and deaths, give them statistics on effectiveness. Share how many people you reach with services. Let them know the impact of programs and services for families and children. Kosair Children s Hospital displays pinwheels. Relate programs to prevention. Given the public s overwhelming tendency to think about child abuse in its worst forms, the term child abuse prevention holds little meaning to them outside of reporting. When relating stories of successful prevention strategies, it is important to connect the dots from the program to the prevention of child abuse. Find real people, and share a story. Using a compelling story of an individual or group who has found a way to make a difference shows your audience how they too can implement effective prevention strategies. Demonstrate how effective evidence-based prevention programs and policies can positively impact the lives of children and families. Focus on approaches and commitments which strengthen families and communities. Ask your local paper to run a four week series on parenting and child development throughout the month of April. Seek out stories of families who have overcome challenges, successfully completed parenting classes or reached positive milestones as a result of receiving local community services. Grant County courthouse displays pinwheels. Union College displays pinwheels. Kentucky State Police Post 16 displays a yard sign. 8

You may use the following sample text to communicate prevention information throughout the month of April. One Liner Sample: April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Contact Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky at or visit their website at for ways to help prevent child abuse in your community. (Or insert your own organization and contact information.) Short Article: Child Abuse Prevention Month has been observed each April since its first presidential proclamation in Since that time, millions of Americans have participated in exciting public awareness campaigns. Individuals, organizations and communities across the country plant pinwheels, organize trainings, host fundraisers, hold family fun events, and support a multitude of other activities celebrating childhood and raising awareness that all children deserve to grow up in a safe, healthy environment. 10 Tips for Utilizing Social Media to Promote Awareness Activities Interact: Use Social Media to Engage in Dialogue and Receive Feedback Be yourself. Monitor and respond to comments to create an active and engaged environment. Retweet and share the social media posts of other organizations. Negative comments do not simply go away, however when handled correctly, your response can help build support for campaign efforts. Build Excitement by Offering a Sneak Peek of What is To Come Begin sharing information about how your agency is working to raise awareness as soon as planning begins. Offer followers a sneak peek at your efforts, your materials and your campaign information. Demonstrate your Agency s Strengths Each agency has strengths, and is an expert in a variety of areas. Post information about those strengths and resources on social media in order to seize opportunities to offer local resources, training and support during Child Abuse Prevention Month. Repost Information from Partners Reposting information from partners benefits everyone! Your followers will learn something new and stay engaged. Your partners will gain greater exposure to resources, and as a result the group you reposted from will be more likely to return the favor when you have news to share. Be sure to ask followers to share and repost your information! Put your Website to Work Use social media to drive traffic to your agency s website. Craft a post to provide a teaser to send people to your website to access additional information. Keep People in the Loop Social media is a powerful tool to offer individuals valuable information while promoting events and campaigns. Leverage social networks to generate buzz about campaigns and fundraisers. Encourage your Board of Directors and staff to help spread the word. Ask your friends, your neighbors, your family to be involved in your social media campaign. Use Hashtags Use hashtags (a word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) used to identify and group messages on a specific topic).
