Contact Greenwich Graduate Student Network Supported by the Educational Development Unit #GreenwichGrad a... Becoming Greenwich Graduate Stand out from the crowd A guide for students by students
WHEN Should I Participate in Greenwich Graduate? HOW Can I Develop these Attributes? WHAT Next? WHY Should I Care? WHO is Greenwich Graduate for? A flourishing scholarly community, with an ethos of sustainability and a global outlook, full of confident, distinctive students, always learning, always developing.
WHAT is Greenwich Graduate? Greenwich Graduate is an initiative promoting development of specific attributes as soon as you become a University of Greenwich student. There are three distinct aspects that Greenwich Graduate strives to encompass. Scholarship and Autonomy Building you into an independent thinker to better understand the link between your academic discipline in the classroom and the post-study world. Creativity and Enterprise Making you a clear communicator, confident to utilise communication technology and encounter unfamiliar situations openly. Cross Cultural and International Awareness Fostering self-confidence to comfortably work in diverse groups and create a willingness to embrace diverse cultures.
WHO is Greenwich Graduate for? YOU! All University of Greenwich students are part of the Greenwich Graduate Initiative and it is something you should start thinking about as early as your first year because you are a student on your journey to become a Greenwich graduate. WHEN Should I Participate in Greenwich Graduate? NOW! Throughout your studies at Greenwich, it is important to prepare for your future. While it may seem far away, it is important to begin preparing now. WHY Should I Care? Working to develop the Greenwich Graduate attributes will help you to be better prepared for your future. HOW Can I Develop these Attributes? You choose how to maximise this opportunity. The University has worked hard to embed the Greenwich Graduate attributes into your programme of study to ensure that teaching, learning and assessment activities develop these attributes. Student s Union societies, volunteering opportunities, placements, Greenwich Graduate Student Network (GGSN), all work to promote these same attributes but are just some examples. The possibilities are endless. WHAT Next? Be sure to get involved throughout your academic career and stay connected with the GGSN through social media. Feel free to contact any of the GGSN Leaders throughout the year.
Question 1: Q: I am taking classes relevant to my discipline. Won t this alone help me get a good degree to get the job I want as a Greenwich Graduate? A: Engaging fully in your programme, coupled with anything that you do in addition to your studies will be beneficial to you. General FAQs The University promotes well-rounded students to develop attributes such as networking, professional experience, soft skills and knowledge building. Get involved with extra-curricular activities, volunteer opportunities or anything to make you stand out from the crowd. Becoming a Greenwich Graduate means striving to become an independent thinker. Question 2: Q: I still don t understand. Why should I be concerned with what being a graduate means before I graduate? A: First of all, the university experience flies by and it is imperative to begin planning now. If you wait until the end, you will miss out on all of the opportunities the university has that you should take advantage of. These include opportunities in your programme, the Guidance and Employability Team, Greenwich Graduate Student Network and Student s Union clubs and societies. The opportunities are endless and are here for you to work on your development. Take advantage of the opportunities now.
Question 1: Q: What do scholarship and autonomy mean? A: Scholarship will provide a strong foundation to allow you to progress throughout your time at the University of Greenwich and as a Greenwich graduate. Scholarship includes initiative to complete assignments individually, listening to others views, being critical of them, drawing your own opinions and stating your views confidently. Autonomy focuses on developing you as an individual thinker. It is important for all aspects of your life. Scholarship and Autonomy FAQs Question 2: Q: Why are scholarship and autonomy important? A: Throughout your journey at Greenwich, you need become a critical thinker aiming to understand your discipline and how it relates to professional practice. Scholarship and autonomy are at the heart of your academic experience and contribute to your progression as an independent thinker. It is not just what you know, it is how you use it. Question 3: Q: How will scholarship and autonomy help me develop as a potential employee? A: Graduate jobs require complex knowledge, abilities and skills. Employers today expect intellectually curious individuals who are able to practically research, communicate their ideas, collaborate effectively and build on the strengths of others.
Question 1: Q: Why are creativity and enterprise important? Creativity and Enterprise FAQs A: Creativity and enterprise are important in every industry particularly today in an ever-changing world. Employers are constantly looking to innovate products, services and markets. They are pivotal in contributing to society and solving its problems. Innovative thinking helps differentiate yourself from others in an array of personal and professional situations. Question 2: Q: How can becoming a Greenwich Graduate help develop creativity? A: During your University experience, you will need to show your ability to demonstrate your individuality and originality in your assignments and other endeavours; working in groups can help you to do this. Greenwich Graduate promotes co-creators of knowledge and works to help you see situations in a new light, in order to respond creatively. Do not be afraid to think differently. Question 3: Q: Can creativity be taught? A: This is a highly debated question; however, the University of Greenwich provides a positive environment that aims to foster creativity. Great researchers are those able to use imagination to see things differently and formulate innovative solutions. The Greenwich Graduate attributes provide the framework to become highly creative in academic and practical situations.
Question 1: Q: Why should I be concerned with cross-cultural opportunities? A: Today s society is highly globalised and regardless of where you live and work, the vast majority of jobs today encompass an international element. It is important to recognise the value of other cultures and what you can learn from being a part of our multi-cultural university. You never know where or for whom you may end up working. Question 2: Q: I know that international and cross-cultural awareness are important but what attributes will I need to help me become ready for tomorrow s job market? A: Employers today are looking for graduates who understand the importance of sustainability and ethics when communicating and working at the graduate level. Becoming a Greenwich Graduate means acquiring selfawareness and confidence to navigate and negotiate in a world of cultural, social and political difference. You will need to become ready and able to respond to challenging global issues. Question 3: Q: I have met so many students from different cultures throughout my studies at Greenwich. I am now considering international options. What can help me pursue this? A: The Greenwich Graduate Initiative strives to generate culturious students by promoting an interest in other languages and preparing you for today s globalising society. It introduces you to international perspectives through fellow students, international aspects of the curriculum, Erasmus/study abroad programmes, international visiting academics and opportunities to work abroad. You should feel comfortable and prepared to pursue new endeavors after graduation. Take advantage of these opportunities! Cross-cultural and International Awareness FAQs
