2 Provider Appreciation May 9, 2014 Is a special day to recognize child care providers, teachers and other educators of young children everywhere. Started in 1996 by a group of volunteers in New Jersey, Provider Appreciation is appropriately celebrated each year on the Friday before Mother's. The founding organizers saw the need to recognize the tireless efforts of providers who care for children of working parents. Momentum and support for this event has grown each year and recognition presently includes individuals and government organizations throughout the United States. Forever In My Heart Although I'm not their mother I care for them each day, I cuddle, sing and read to them And watch them as they play. I see each new accomplishment, I help them grow and learn. I understand their language, I listen with concern. They come to me for comfort, And I kiss away their tears. They proudly show their work to me, I give the loudest cheers! No, I 'm not their mother, But my role is just as strong. I nurture them and keep them safe, Though maybe not for long. I know someday the time will come, When we will have to part. But I know each child I cared for, Is forever in my heart! ~ Author Unknown ~ A Hundred Years From Now A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove... but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child. ~ Author Unknown ~ Page 2

4 of the Child On April 8, 2014 the Choctaw Nation Tribal Early Learning Initiative, which is a collaboration of the Choctaw Nation s Child Care Assistance, Head Start, and Tribal Maternal Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting programs, hosted an event in recognition of the National Week of the Young Child at the Choctaw Nation Child Development Center at Durant, Oklahoma. Coordinators of the event included: Angela Dancer, Rebecca Hawkins, Marilyn Williams, Dana Bonham, Judy McDaniel, and Sarah Rowland. To spotlight the Tribe s commitment to early childhood development, Chief Gregory E. Pyle declared April 8, 2014 as the Choctaw of the Young Child. The program included a blessing of the young children by Olin Williams, Choctaw Nation Senior Heritage Resource Technician, reading of the Declaration by Gary Batton, Assistant Chief of the Choctaw Nation, a Choctaw dance presented by a class of children from the Choctaw Nation Head Start, and words of the Choctaw language presented by a class of children from the Choctaw Nation Child Care Center. Sitting in the floor and reading books such as Five Little Monkeys and Is Your Mama a Llama was another highlight of the morning for the children. Readers included Assistant Chief, Gary Batton; Senior Executive Officer of Member Services, Stacy Shepherd; Executive Director of the Education Department, Joy Culbreath; Senior Director, Angela Dancer; and Tribal Council Member, Thomas Williston. Michele Aplin, owner of Kidzone Home care of Calera, Oklahoma, and a contracted provider with the Choctaw Nation Child Care Assistance Program for several years, participated in the event with seven children from her facility. Refreshments were served and a bag of goodies was given to each of the children who participated.
