2 New College Nottingham New College Nottingham is an equal opportunities College. We welcome disabled people, and are committed to promoting equality of opportunity in education and training. This leaflet aims to provide helpful information on services and facilities provided for people with a disability, and who to contact for more information. College Procedures on Disability New College Nottingham is committed to eliminating unlawful discrimination, promoting equality of opportunity and promoting good relations between different groups. This applies to all present and future students, employees, governors, partners and contractors delivering services on our behalf. Several procedures within ncn reinforce this commitment, including: ncn Equality and Diversity Policy ncn Equality and Diversity Strategy ncn Disability Equality Scheme ncn Learning Support: Quality Standards ncn has an additional Learning Support service which aims to meet your individual support needs. We promote an inclusive educational environment and encourage all students to achieve their full potential, by making use of the resources available. All policies, including this Disability Statement and the College Student Charter are available in alternative formats on request. They are also available on the College Intranet and in College Learning Centres. Staff Expertise The Specialist Learning Support team at ncn has qualified and experienced staff in the field of disability. All teaching staff in the service have teaching qualifications and many 2

3 have further qualifications in their specialist field. If you are a mental health services user there are specialist staff to offer advice. ncn has an ongoing programme of staff development around various disabilities. The Specialist Support Service can give you more details on the qualifications and experience of team members and how they may support you. Pre-Entry Advice and Guidance If you are unsure which course to apply for, ring us on (0115) and ask for a Guidance Interview. All the ncn Centres have teams of staff, including Careers Advisers, Student Advisers and Learning Advisers, who can talk through your educational and support requirements. We can also help in the following ways: Filling in forms Adapting forms Arranging enrolment to suit your requirements Providing staff to support you while you are being enrolled Financial, benefits and welfare advice Induction Induction is an opportunity for you to get to know the College and its services. You will be given more details about the course, the scheme of work and assessment procedures, and you can get to know the other students and meet members of staff. We believe all students benefit from the Induction process. If there are any parts of your Induction you would like to change to meet your own requirements, please discuss them with your course tutor. Student with disabilities and/or learning difficulties have the opportunity, on request, to visit the College prior to the induction period to orientate themselves with the surroundings away from peak college times. 3

4 Educational Facilities & Support Curriculum Support You can receive additional support for your learning in lots of ways, depending on what you require. Support can be in the form of: Smaller group size Learning support in class, including a note taker Extra help from a tutor Materials adapted e.g. Brailed, taped Separate courses Help with arranging an individual learning programme Communication support Special assessments e.g. dyslexia, visual impairment Specialist ongoing guidance Links with other care professionals Transport between sites Specialist tutor support e.g. language support, teacher of the deaf, teacher of the visually impaired, dyslexia tutor, and mobility training In order for us to be able to make reasonable adjustments to our provision we would like to discuss your requirements with you before you start College. Therefore, early application is advisable. We will work with you to assess your needs and use external agencies as appropriate. Equipment and Technological Support New College Nottingham has specialist equipment available for loan. Subject to assessment and demand, we can provide students with dictaphones, computers, laptops, screens, keyboards, desks and adjustable chairs plus appropriate software. 4

5 Other Educational Support Personal Care and Medical Support Wherever you are studying at New College Nottingham you can access personal care assistance from support workers, should you require it. All ncn Colleges have staff qualified in First Aid. Examination Arrangements You may need additional support or specialist arrangements during examinations or assessments. Examination boards and awarding bodies may have different regulations details of these are available from Examinations Officer. Students usually require professionally endorsed evidence of their need from a doctor, psychologist or other appropriate professional. Particular arrangements can include: Adapted exam papers A reader Amanuensis (someone to write for you) Language content modified e.g. for deaf students Rest periods Special invigilation arrangements It is important that arrangements are made well before the examination. We also have many courses where assessment is continuous and paced to suit you. Contact your course tutor for details. 5

6 Complaints and Appeals Procedures New College Nottingham will try to make your time with us a pleasant, enjoyable and rewarding experience. However, there may be a time when you wish to complain about some part of that College experience. If you do, the procedures for making a complaint are set out in the College Charter. Any student requiring an advocate to support them in making a complaint or in an appeals process should contact one of the Programme Area Managers listed on the back page of this booklet. Alternatively, you might prefer to contact the Students Union or choose one of your friends or someone from your family. Other support is also available, if required, to assist in making a complaint, such as communication support. Facilities/ Access to College Sites New College Nottingham offers courses at a range of locations across the city. Some buildings are more easily accessed than others. The service guide over the page illustrates basic access and facilities at each ncn College. Our Accommodation Strategy includes plans for improving access. If access proves difficult for you, we will try to make other arrangements. For example, we may be able to relocate classes. 6
