2 Profile and Aims At the Institute of Psychology in Jena, excellent research is the foundation for modern international teaching. Through varied cooperation and evaluation projects with industry, clinicians, practitioners and social organisations, we are further advancing the application of research and teaching. In externally funded research, we emphasize the attraction of competitively evaluated research grants, the cooperation with national and international partners, and the translation of research into teaching and practice. Through the combination of excellent research and applied projects in their practical and final year project work, many of our alumni can seamlessly move into their desired occupation or field of research. We maintain a close relationship with former students and staff through the Alumni Association, special events, and occupational or practical cooperation.

3 Research Excellent teaching and sustainable application are fuelled by outstanding research. In Jena, we represent the complete range of psychological topics, with particular strengths in: the investigation of social and emotional determinants of human experience, behaviour and development the investigation of the biological bases of human experience and behaviour using modern methods of the cognitive neurosciences the application of research in industry, schools, health care and society the development of both novel methods to investigate psychological research questions, and new intervention methods Strong support for young scientists, internationality and a close integration of research, teaching and application in Jena are exemplified by: the International Graduate College Conflict and Cooperation between Groups (DFG) the Center for Applied Developmental Science (CADS) the Clinic for Behaviour Therapy at the Center for Psychotherapy the Research Group: Discrimination and Tolerance in Intergroup Relations (DFG) The 14 Professors of the Institute are co-editors of some of the most important international journals in psychology. Currently, the Institute houses 86 research projects funded by national and international bodies (> 3 million/year).

4 Teaching Teaching here in Jena is characterised by a high-level of internationalisation, innovative teaching styles and numerous bilateral exchange programs with European and North American universities. A guided-study mentor programme has been specifically arranged for students from abroad. In addition, many of our courses are available in English. Efficient learning at Jena is also supported by a wide range of multimedia facilities, and students have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and data-processing resources. After their first practical experiences in the Clinic for Behaviour Therapy at the Center for Psychotherapy, postgraduate students have the opportunity to graduate in a five years training in Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy. A variety of teaching from practitioners complements this efficient integration between teaching and application. The full range of university degrees in the field of psychology is currently available at Jena (Bachelor and Master (BSc and MSc in Psychology), Diploma, PhD, Habilitation).

5 Life and Learning - Studying in Jena Psychology students in Jena not only have the opportunity to learn new skills, exciting subjects and interesting knowledge, but can also enjoy an active social life alongside their learning. At the beginning of every winter semester, a university induction week welcomes the new students and makes long-term assistance available. The new students find out about everything that they need to embark on a successful course of study, and will be accompanied by a mentor for the whole of their first semester. Psychology students in Jena traditionally cultivate a strong community in which they learn, research and party together. Close contacts originate not just through their shared study, but also through a range of activities: At the traditional Psycho-Picnic and football tournament, the Psychocinema, the annual Christmas party, or at the Psychology Ball, the stress of study can be eased and forgotten by having a lot of fun and allowing everyone to really live a little... Through the good contacts made with fellow students and also with lecturers, everyone can rely on the fact that advice and help is on hand if problems or questions arise!
