Dispositions Indicator(s): Display initiative and engagement by posing questions and investigating the answers beyond the collection of superficial facts Demonstrate creativity by using multiple resources and formats. Responsibilities Indicator(s): Respect copyright/intellectual property rights of creators and producers. Self-Assessment Strategies Indicator(s): Determine how to act on information (accept, reject, modify). Scenario: The English teacher and librarian are co-teaching a lesson together on Greek Mythology. The English teacher and librarian met in order to plan together for the unit. For the unit, students will research a Greek Mythology story. The students will then create their own original graphic novel based on their research. The instructors will co-teach both lessons. Overview: 6th grade students will explore Greek mythology and language arts. They will conduct research on a Greek mythology story in preparation for an upcoming graphic novel lesson. The student should explain characteristics of the mythological story that he or she is studying in a graphic organizer. Final Product: Each student will have at least three resources and will write notes about their resources on a graphic organizer. Library Lesson: Each student will choose one mythological story to research. They will conduct research and will find at least three research resources. They will learn characteristics of a Greek Mythology story. Estimated Lesson Time: 90 minutes
2 Assessment Product: Instructors and students use a rubric that was created by the instructors. The rubric will measure the following criteria: 1. Student uses at least three sources for their research; one print and one online. 2. Sources are valid. 3. Works have been cited using MLA format. 4. Sources describe characteristics of a Greek Mythology story. Process: The instructors will guide and monitor students' progress as they research and complete their graphic organizers. They will also measure if the students' graphic organizers met the criteria of the rubric. Student self-questioning: Are the resources reliable? What are appropriate methods for finding information about this topic? Do the sources relate to the student?s topic? Are the sources cited in MLA format? Instructional Plan Resources students will use: Dataset (ie. lists, tables, databases) Interactive Resource (i.e. webpages, multimedia learning objects, chat services) Text (books, letters, poems, newspapers, etc.) Interactive Resource URL: Resources instructor will use: Projector Laptop Instruction/Activities Direct instruction: Instructors talk about examples of books, websites, or reference materials related to Greek Mythology that the students could use as resources for this lesson. Modeling and guided practice: As a class, discuss a variety of research strategies, including: how to use key words searches, subject heading searches, boolean searches, quotations, etc. Also, talk about how to analyze whether resources are accurate(standards for the 21st Century). Independent practice: Students each choose one Greek mythological story as a topic to research. They will then locate at least three sources which explain characteristics of their topic. They must choose at least one online resource and one print resource. They will use search strategies in order to measure the accuracy of their sources. They will take notes about all of their resources on a graphic organizer. The notes will reflect characteristics of the Greek Mythology story they are researching. They will cite all resources using MLA format. Sharing and reflecting: The students will use the search strategies worksheet to critically reflect about whether they are using effective research strategies and appropriate resources. Students will also have opportunities to ask the instructors questions about research strategies. At the end of class, the students will pair up into groups of two. Each group will discuss components and characteristics of their mythological story topics. They will also discuss whether they have enough information, and whether they have used valid and appropriate resources for their upcoming graphic novel assignment. In the next
3 class session, the students will refer to their research while writing their own original graphic novels.
