1 Follow the Safety Regulations: 1. Always follow regulations and instructions for the use of cleaning and disinfection products. 2. Observe the pictogram(s), hazard and precautionary (H & P) statements. Look at the danger symbol, risk and safety (R & S) phrases (valid until 2017). 3. If you are in doubt, ask your supervisor. 4. Use the prescribed protective clothing, protective gloves and eye/ face protection. 5. Clean your protective outfit after use and check it for damage. In case of dilution: first cold water, then add the product. 8. Return products to storage room after use. 9. Always store cleaning agents and disinfectants in the original packing. 10. Store products apart which may react with each other. 11. No eating, drinking, or smoking in the storage room and when handling chemicals. 12. Always wash your hands before breaks, before and after going to the toilet and locker rooms. 13. Take care of yourself and your colleagues. 2 Safe storage and handling of cleaning agents and disinfectants It is a matter of your safety Cleaning agents and disinfectants are not dangerous, if you handle them correctly. Failure to do so may have hazardous consequences. In this flyer you can learn about some safety precautions, comply with these and you can safely use the products. It is a matter of your personal safety, the safety of others, your workplace and the protection of the environment. Cleaning agents and disinfectants Directions for use For effective use of detergents and disinfectants always follow the correct cleaning procedure: 1. Remove gross soil 2. Pre-rinse 3. Detergent cleaning 4. Intermediate rinse 5. Disinfection 6. Post rinse This general procedure should be documented in the cleaning schedule for equipment in the area. Cleaning agents and disinfectants are necessary to ensure proper hygiene at your working area. Visible soil such as food residues cannot be removed properly without the use of cleaning agents. Neither can bacteria nor other microorganisms be removed without the use of disinfectants. Optimum chemical performance To make sure you get the best result possible from the product, ensure you have the correct cleaning and disinfecting agents: u Correct concentration u Correct contact time u Correct usage temperature u Follow correct cleaning schedule 2 3

5 Directions for Handling Storage: Order and cleanliness! To avoid accidents it is important to take precautions when you dilute and dissolve the products: Remember to follow the guidelines for order and cleanliness where the cleaning agents and disinfectants are stored: u First fill water into the container then the product u Use cold water u Add product slowly u Mix product and water thoroughly u Liquid products are more safe in handling Avoid mixing products as they may react and cause: u Generation of heat and risk of splashes u Toxic gases and fumes u Risk of explosion u Risk of ineffectiveness u No entry of unauthorized personnel u Always wear suitable clothing, protective gloves and shoes and eye/face protection when entering the storage room u Alkaline and acidic products must be stored separately to avoid mixing u Acidic, oxidizing and chlorinated products must be stored separately to avoid mixing in case of accidents u Peroxyacetic acid and hydrogen peroxide containing products should not be stored together with alkaline products u Do not eat, drink, or smoke in storage room Use of the following equipment will make handling safer: u Closed systems u Fully automated dosing systems u Manually operated dosing aids, e.g. special taps, pumps, etc. 8 9

6 First Aid Emergency Plan SKIN u Rinse skin under running water for at least 15 minutes u Remove immediately damp/wet clothing and shoes u Seek medical advice u Show the label or the safety datasheet to the physician EMERGENCY PLAN: u Locations of fire alarms and fire extinguishers u Emergency escape routes and safety equipment u Special security instructions for your department (e.g. damage control plan) EYES u Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. u Seek help from your colleagues u See an eye specialist (ophthalmologist) immediately u Show the label or the safety datasheet to the specialist RESPIRATORY PASSAGES u Remove to fresh air u Loosen tight clothing u In case of dizziness or pain, see a physician u Show the label or the safety data sheet to the physician Mouth and ingestion u Rinse mouth with plenty of water u Drink only water u Do not induce vomiting u Seek immediately medical advice from a physician u Show the label or the safety datasheet to the physician THE EMERGENCY CALL: 1. Where did it happen? 2. What has happened? 3. How many people are injured? 4. Who is calling? 5. Wait for questions! Do not hang up until you are told by the emergency coordinator! WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES (FIRE / ACCIDENTS WITH INJURED PEOPLE): u Make an emergency call following the instruction given above u Secure the accident site u In case of danger, bring injured people or helpless people to a safe place or arrange for help u Arrange for first aid u In case of small fires start fighting the fire with fire extinguishers, do not tackle large fires u Leave emergency site via the most direct escape routes, guide people not familiar on the site u Wait for the emergency teams (fire brigade, paramedics) to arrive and show them to the place of the accident u Do not use lifts! u Go to the emergency collection point u Do not leave the premises unless instructed! 10 11
