7950 XRS-40 TECHNICAL OVERVIEW 5 TH ANNUAL DE-CIX CUSTOMER SUMMIT October 15, 2014
7950 EXTENSIBLE ROUTING SYSTEM (XRS) MORE SCALE, VERSATILITY, EFFICIENCY Scalable 16 Tb/s per rack, multichassis evolution Distributed multicore processing High-density 10 GE, 40 GE, 100 GE and beyond Versatile 7950 XRS IP/MPLS core, L2/3 VPN services, DC-GW, All elements upgradable and future-ready Adapts to changing needs and applications Efficient Drastically reduced resource footprint Energy and thermal efficient design Operation simplification with uniform SR OS/FP3 2
7950 EXTENSIBLE ROUTING SYSTEM (XRS) FAMILY OVERVIEW 12.0.R R XRS R XRS XRS-16c Model System Capacity (HD, Tb/s) Slots 10 GE Capacity 40 GE Capacity 100 GE Capacity Footprint (Standard 19 Rack) Availability System Expansion 7950 XRS July 2014 Multichassis 7950 XRS September 2012 XRS-40 and/or Multichassis 7950 XRS-16c July 2013 Standalone 3
7950 XRS-40 MULTICHASSIS DESIGN CHALLENGES Scale and Performance High Availability and Reliability Flexible Deployment Simplified Operations Scale a single chassis system to multiple chassis Maintain forwarding performance and feature set across chassis interconnection links Deliver a highly redundant control plane and switch fabric interconnection architecture Provide the same reliability on external chassis links as on internal links Reuse common components in a flexible chassis extension Simplify upgrade and installation procedure with custom cabling, minimize downtime Design the same system management interface so that the chassis appear as a single system Simplify management and operations of multiple chassis 4
7950 XRS-20 CHASSIS OVERVIEW 2 Chassis Control Modules (CCMs) Upper Cable Guide Chassis Air Exhaust 2 Fan Assemblies 10 XRS Control Modules (XCMs) That Hold 20 XRS Media Adapters (XMAs) 2 Control Processor Modules (CPMs) 8 Switch Fabric Modules (SFMs) Rear Cable Guide (Not Shown) Lower Cable Guide Air Intake Power Termination Panel Advanced Power Equalization Modules (APEQs) APEQ Air Exhaust Front Rear 5
THE 7950 XRS-40 HAS ARRIVED! SIMPLE, ELEGANT AND EFFICIENT SCALING Designed as a multichassis system from the very beginning 16 Tb/s 32 Tb/s Switch fabric modules have integrated optical backplane interconnects, extends single stage switching fabric across multiple chassis Same control processing technology and system management interface Uses common chassis components Minimal downtime when upgrading the system Flexible scaling options, completely additive without replacing components Deploy an XRS-20 Upgrade an existing XRS-20 to an XRS-40 Deploy an XRS-40 from the start 7950 XRS XRS-40 Double the XRS-20 System Capacity With Minimal Overhead 6
7950 XRS CHASSIS INTERCONNECTS Chassis interconnects are provided as custom cable bundles with staggered and numbered fiber cables 8 SFMs on master chassis connect to 8 SFMs on the extension chassis Integrated MPO connectors and 100 Gb/s CXP optics Each SFM interconnect uses 14 cables 2 CPMs on master chassis connect to 2 CPMs on the extension chassis Integrated MPO connectors and 40 Gb/s QSFP+ optics Provides redundant high-capacity control plane interconnect Easy installation and troubleshooting with LED indications for wrong cable connections Patent-pending interconnection diagnostics and connection health monitoring SFM CPM 7
7950 XRS SINGLE STAGE SWITCH FABRIC Optimized single stage switch fabric avoids complexity and scheduling issues of multistage fabrics 7950 XRS fabric design uses the same architecture on the XRS-20 and XRS-40 Simple architecture, simple to understand and to debug Fewer components consume less power Higher reliability with fewer components to fail Simpler hitless routing around failures Delivers full slots capacity to line cards, each XMA connects to all SFMs in each chassis XRS-40 switch fabric provides 14+2 redundancy with graceful degradation Cells are distributed over all available switch fabric links to all switch fabric chips Fabric component or link failures are easily handled while maintaining performance 8
EXTENDING THE 7950 XRS-20 TO THE XRS-40 ONE SYSTEM, TWICE THE CAPACITY The extension chassis is managed and controlled through the master chassis to provide an integrated view Presented as a seamless single system with additional slots 20-slot system becomes a 40-slot system Provides contiguous slot and component numbering Simplifies system management and high availability LCD screens identify Master and Extension systems and the numbering for slots Cable Tray Cable tray labels identify the numbering for components in the rear 9
