2 UPGRADE NOTE PRODUCTS SUPPORTED: NetStreams Musica Audio System ClearOne/NetStreams DigiLinX Audio System CLEARONE DOCUMENT NTS (REVISION 1.0) January 2014 OVERVIEW UPGRADING A NETSTREAMS MUSICA AUDIO SYSTEM TO A CLEARONE/NETSTREAMS DIGILINX AUDIO SYSTEM This document was designed to help customers upgrade the NetStreams Musica Audio system to the ClearOne / NetStreams DigiLinX system. Musica is a high-quality six-zone audio distribution system that consists of two main parts: the in-wall keypads, and a head-end component called the Audio Distribution Center or ADC. Musica also has various accessory products such as Audio Ports, IR Remote Controls, and Web Servers. Why upgrade from Musica to DigiLinX? + Unlimited expansion + Internet Radio + VoIP Intercom modes + Compatible with StreamNet IP Video products + Built-in Web Server + Higher fidelity with 100% digital audio + Control other home systems such as Lighting, Security, HVAC, or any other device in the home or business. + And many more reasons While there is no limit on how many zones the DigiLinX system can support, for the purpose of this technical note we will be discussing a 6-zone DigiLinX system upgrade. Upgrading Musica to a DigiLinX system They both use the same wiring, they both use the same accessories, and they both have 2-gang keypads that have high-quality amplifiers built-in the keypads. Both DigiLinX and Musica use the same wiring infrastructure. This wiring is based on the ANSI/CEA-2030 multi-room audio standard and consists of 4-conductor wire of AWG and category 5 unshielded twisted-pair wire pulled from the head-end location to each room keypad location, and then a service loop before routing to the speakers located within the walls or ceiling. 3 DigiLinX upgrade equipment needed: + (6) NS-TLA250 - Amplified Text based OLED screen touch pad. Full metadata display, control of the zone / multizone. Integrated IP intercom 100 watts (2x50) amplifier + (1) NS-MLA MediaLinX Pro IP-Based 4-source MediaLinX component that combines digital conversion of up to four Legacy analog or digital audio sources and control of third party sub-systems. + (1) NS-SW208 (version 1.06) - SwitchLinX 8-port Megabit Ethernet Managed Switch. (Note: Upgrade to a larger StreamNet switch such as the SW524, SW3524 or SW5524 if needed) + (1) PL960 - Intelligent Power Supply-Fanless v in 28v out for powering multiple devices Musica Diagram Page 3

4 A Musica system can control up to 4 global sources with IR emitters connected to source IR ports and analog audio inputs located on the rear panel of the ADC. Musica also supports up to 6 zones of audio when Musica keypads are connected to the RJ45 zones output ports on the rear of the ADC and the two-position 5.5mm removable screw-down euro block (or phoenix style connector) used to power the amplifier located in the in-wall keypad. The Musica keypad is an in-wall user interface with a built-in amplifier and would fit into most standard 2-gang electrical boxes or mud rings. Both the DigiLinX TLA250 keypad and the Musica keypads install into the same size 2-gang electrical boxes or mud rings LCD - Wide-screen graphic LCD user interface 2. PWR - Room system power ON/OFF button: whole system ON/ OFF 3. Menu - Menu offers total fredom in selecting sound, naming source, adjusting backlight brightness and allows you to program audio sources from remotes. Automatically returns to basic screen if there is no input for 30 seconds 4. SRCE - Browse the audio sources (S1/S2/S3/S4/EXT*/FM**) to listen. * If optional Audio Port is connected. **With option DFMT FM tuner card. 5. IR Confirmation LED - This LED will flash to confirm the reception of an IR signal from a remote control through the remote sensor. 6. Remote Sensor - Used to recive commands from an IR remote control. The IR receiver also handles routing IR commands back to head end sources, and to the Audio Port if connected. 7. Source Control/10-Key Direct Tuner Access - These buttons provide you with a conveniences of controlling 4 audio sources connected to the ADC. They consist of 10 buttons and allow you to register up to 20 commands per audio sources. 1. Speaker Output - 4 pin 5mm Phoenix type connection. 2. 5 The Netstreams DigiLinX Audio Distribution system consists of a three main parts starting with an in-wall keypad, and two head-end components, a 10/100 managed Ethernet switch and a six zone power supply. Just like the Musica system, DigiLinX also includes various accessory products such as the AP500 Audio Port, KL1-R IR Remote Control, and much more. Many of these accessory products work with both Musica and DigiLinX allowing most Musica accessories to be used with the DigiLinX upgrade. How to upgrade: Starting at the head-end and before disconnecting any wires; please disconnect the power to the Musica ADC at the head-end. Starting with the Musica ADC, please disconnect the 4 analog audio cables from the sources connected to the rear panel of the Musica ADC, and unplug the any IR emitters. Next unplug the 6-zone power and UTP cables from the zone connections from the rear of the ADC. [NOTE: documenting or labeling the zone cables will make the deployment of the new DigiLinX equipment easier] Finally unplug any RS-232 or web server connected to the DB9 port on the rear panel of the ADC and also any mute or phone contact closure connections as well. 6 Now let s move to the keypad locations After removing the screw-less trim plate, remove the 4 Phillips screws holding the keypad to the 2-gang electrical box or mud ring. Once you have pulled the keypad from the wall, disconnect the power connection. This is the two conductor green euro block connector and should be marked with PWR. Next remove the ADC RJ45 connection which should be marked ADC and the RJ45 connection (if present) marked EIM Next remove any coaxial antenna connected to the back of the keypad or to the optional FM tuner card on some keypads. Finally remove the speaker wire connection and keep in mind this connector could be a single 4 conductor 5.5MM euro block removable screw-down type connector, or it could be two separate two conductor 5.5MM euro block removable screw-down connectors. Also if this is two connector blocks, document or label the wires for the left and right channels to save time when installing the DigiLinX keypad. NOTE: Documenting or labeling the in-wall cables can make the installation much easier and prevent miss-wiring or damage to the components or speakers. Now if you have any accessories that were connected to the in-wall keypad via the RJ45 connection labeled EIM you will not need to uninstall these products. Your Musica system should now be fully disconnected and you are now ready to move onto installation of the DigiLinX system. Page 6

7 First make sure that none of the DigiLinX equipment is connected to any power sources until you have all wiring connections completed. Your Musica system should now be fully disconnected and you are now ready to move onto installation of the DigiLinX system. Starting at the keypad locations, you can start with connecting the UTP cable that was connected to the EIM port on the Musica keypad to the port on the back of the DigiLinX TLA keypad labled EIM or Audio Port. Next connect the UTP cable that was connected to the ADC port on the Musica system to the port on the back of the DigiLinX TLA250 Keypad marked Ethernet 10/100. Next connect the speaker cable(s) to the back of the DigiLinX Keypad labeled Speakers Left and Right. Please pay close attention to the polarity, and if your Musica keypad had a 4-position euro block, you will need to un screw the wire and use the new two position euro blocks that came with the DigiLinX TLA250. Finally you will need to attach the power cable that was connected to the Musica keypad marked PWR to the DigiLinX keypad marked as Power 28 Volt. [NOTE: The power connection on Musica is only a two conductor connection. If your cable length between the keypad and the head-end location is under 150 then you can just connect the two conductor cable onto either side of the 4-position power port but please ensure the polarity of the cable is correct. If your cable is longer than 150 then you will need to use the new power connector (red in color) that came with the DigiLinX TLA250 and this will require all 4-conductors of your AWG cable and again pay close attention to all polarities. With the wiring complete you can now attach the 4 screws into the 2-gang electrical box or mud ring holding the keypad in place in the wall. The DigiLinX TLA250 keypad has a wall-to-wall glass faceplate that is held on with strong magnets. The glass must be in place with the black background is a Lexan layer which must be used for all installations. The color layer goes on top of the black layer. Now returning to the head-end, you can start by plugging in all the UTP cables that were plugged into the Musica ADC zone RJ45 ports. Now plug in the cables that were connected to each of the ADC zone power outputs on the rear panel of the ADC above the UTP cables into any of the ports on the SwitchLinX SW208 (version 1.06). 8 [NOTE: the power cables at the head end are also terminated from the Musica with two position euro blocks. As long as the zone UTP cable is no longer than 150 you can just keep these connectors and plug them into half of each port on the DigiLinX PowerLinX rear panel. Swap the connectors for the Red Phoenix connectors. The Green connectors are too big and only one TLA250 per PowerLinX Port. Ensure your polarity is correct on all connectors and finish all other wiring before turning on the PL960 power supply. However if you changes the power connection on the keypads or your power cables are longer than 150 then please remove the two position euro blocks and replace them with the 4 conductor connectors that come with the PL960 PowerLinX. Also do not connect two keypads to a single port on the PowerLinX. Each Keypad needs a separate power port connection no matter if you keep the two conductors euro block or move to the 4 conductor euro block. In all cases only connect one keypad to one power port on the back of the PowerLinX. Now you are ready to start connecting the four source audio cables and four IR emitters to the DigiLinX MLA4000 MediaLinX Pro. Next connect the Ethernet port to an available port on the DigiLinX SW208 (version 1.06) (Note: Upgrade to a larger StreamNet switch such as the SW524, SW3524 or SW5524 if needed). You will also need to connect the MLA4000 MediaLinX to the PL960 PowerLinX using the supplied euro blocks. You are now ready to power up the system and configure the devices. At this point you will need to download the latest version of the StreamNet Application Suite and configure the system, learn IR for the sources and setup the audio and Internet radio features. This is a self-paced online certification course and once you have completed this step you will receive a certificate that will allow you to download and open the configuration software.
