2 Mentor Energy Audit How much is energy inefficiency costing your business? Energy is an unavoidable expense, but many businesses are spending more than they need to. If your business spends more than 10,000 a year on energy, we could help you find ways to reduce that cost. A Mentor Energy Audit will reveal how and where your business uses and wastes energy. It will also show you what you could do to lower your costs and cut both consumption and associated carbon emissions. Our Energy Audit looks at three key areas: energy efficiency lighting, heating, cooling, refrigeration, building fabric, plant and equipment tariff management tariff type, price and fuel switching opportunities renewable energy ways to potentially create your own energy through solar, wind and biomass, for example. How much will it cost? The cost of your Energy Audit is based on the number of sites your business has and its annual energy spend. Why choose Mentor? Our independent experts are trained by the Energy Institute, and because they aren t focused on any one technology or service, their advice is unbiased. What does the audit involve? It starts with a call to arrange a time for us to carry out the Energy Audit. During the call we ll also let you know what information you ll need to give the auditor this will be things like energy bills and tariff details. Our auditor will then visit you to carry out an on-site evaluation of your business s energy usage and needs. Over the past 25 years, Contrax Furniture has grown into a company with a turnover of 1.2 million a year and over 20 employees. When Director Simon Baldwin decided that the business needed to review its operations to make sure it was using energy efficiently, he turned to us. His research included looking at our use of energy for heating and running electrical equipment. He helped us to negotiate a refund of 11,000. He also pointed out that the furniture-maker s waste materials such as sawdust, wood off-cuts, pallets and veneer left over from the manufacturing process could be burnt on-site in an industrial wood waste burner. Inspiring savings Our oil bill and waste has been reduced by a third, Simon notes. Another bonus is that the factory floor is much tidier, as we don t need to store waste for the next skip. So, it s now a safer and more open place to work. Chris also identified that we can save further money by fixing leaks in our air lines and introducing a system for monitoring the CNC extraction fan during lunch hours, for instance. Simon believes that an important part of Mentor s role was providing the impetus and framework for the business to identify and act on necessary improvements. The Borough, an award-winning pub, restaurant and hotel in Lancaster, is proud of its commitment to the environment. During an expansion into an adjacent property to add a 14-bed hotel, they saw the renovation work as an opportunity to build energy efficiency into the infrastructure. The Borough s Director, Martin Horner, wanted professional advice and asked us to help. All in all, our changes save us 450 a month. were over-lit, relying on dimmer switches to produce atmospheric lighting effects. As these switches still use energy even when turned low, the audit recommended we remove some lighting fittings, including three chandeliers. They look pretty, but they use a lot of energy. Changes for the better Martin found that the Energy Audit encouraged his team to look at the business in a different way, for example: The cleaners arrive at 6am, turn on all the lights and leave them on until we served at 12pm. The simple act of asking them to switch off all lights when they leave has saved us 20% on our electricity bill he notes. And that s not all. The audit also pointed out that they could recycle their waste cooking oil; it s now used to produce biodiesel for their vehicles. They've also installed a more efficient boiler and ovens. All in all, these changes save us 450 a month, which represents a 20% reduction in our overall energy costs confirms Martin. We re continuing to find ways we can make changes for the better, and it s this commitment that s led to us winning a local LESS Energy Saver Award. 6 NatWest
